5 . I’m writing today from my balcony(阳台)in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. It’s summertime. It’s hot. Tourism is at its highest. I look out below as selfie(自拍)sticks extend, sunburns worsen, and loudness takes over.
Living in the Gothic Quarter has been one of the best, yet worst decisions I’ve made while living in Barcelona. I’m surrounded by beautiful architecture, fantastic shops are at my doorstep, and my favorite coffee shop is just around the corner. However, also at my doorstep are hundreds of tourists.
More than 30 million people visit Barcelona every year. But the city isn’t developing well. It’s dying. Financially, it’s doing well. However, the locals aren’t happy. What’s wrong? Landlords(房东)have realized there’s more profit in Airbnb, so when contracts come up for renewal, it’s common to find locals unable to pay up due to the increase in their rental prices. Locals don’t dare visit its nearest beach Barceloneta once the weather warms up. A lot of stores have turned into souvenir(纪念品)shops. Living prices have increased while salaries remain low.
People aren’t sitting back and taking it, though. There are regular anti-tourism protests. The Barcelona City Council has felt pressure from the community to resist tourism. In 2017, a law was approved to control the amount of accommodation made available for tourists. It was hoped the law would distribute tourist accommodation more evenly across the city, placing less pressure on already heavily populated neighborhoods. However, many tourists who come to Barcelona are day-trippers, only crowding the city’s streets. The council’s efforts are not controlling tourism. They’re only controlling accommodation.
If you want to visit Barcelona, consider avoiding May through August. Though I’d argue Barcelona doesn’t quite have an “off season”. Check out some of Catalonia’s other beautiful destinations: putting less pressure on Barcelona and benefiting smaller towns and cities’ economies. Learn some phrases in Catalan. It goes a long way towards showing respect. “Bon dia” instead of “buenos dias” and “adeu” rather than “adios”.

8 . A famously strange statue in the city of Oxford, England recently received official protection as a historic landmark. But, Magnus Hanson-Heine, the son of the man who built the artwork, is not happy about the special recognition.
But first, about that statue: It is a 7.6 meter tall model of a shark. The strange part is in the sculpture’s positioning up on the top of the Hanson-Heine house. It appears from the street as if the huge fish dove straight through the home’s roof.
Magnus Hanson-Heine’s father, Bill, put up the sculpture in 1986 as a reminder of war and nuclear weapons.
Bill Heine was an American who studied law at the University of Oxford and made the town his home. He got the idea for the sculpture after he heard American warplanes fly over his house one night in April 1986. The next morning, he learned that the planes had been on their way to bomb Tripoli, Libya.
Bill put the sculpture on display on August 9 to mark the 41st anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan.
The image of a shark crashing through the home captured the shock civilians(贫民)must feel when bombs smash into their homes, Magnus Hanson-Heine said. Bill Heine died in 2019.
Magnus Hanson-Heine calls the local government’s declaration about the sculpture “absurd.” His father, he explained, never sought nor accepted permission to put up the shark. In fact, he strongly believed, his son said, that the government should not decide what art the public should see.
And, Hanson-Heine noted, the same local council that has declared the shark historic and protected, had spent years seeking its removal. The shark’s anti-war message is just as important today, Hanson-Heine said.
1. What is strange about the sculpture?A.Its purpose. | B.Its creator. | C.Its position. | D.Its quality. |

C.The council didn’t like the sculpture. | D.The shark will be moved to the museum. |
9 . The best holiday trip I have ever been on is a trip to Fraser’s Hill in Selangor. It was the school holidays and my parents had booked bungalow(平房)at the top of the hill just one and a half hours’ drive from K.L.
We started early in the morning by car. My brother, sister and I sat in the car with eager expectation of the cool weather and jungle trekking(跋涉). Our journey took us along the North-South Highway to Bukit Beruntung where we exited the toll booth(收费站)and headed past Serendah till we arrived at Kuala Kubu for breakfast. It was a little town that had many old buildings and an breathtaking landscape.
Further along the way, we passed a huge dam and stopped at the lakeside to take pictures. Along its banks were little huts that dotted the hillsides. The journey up the hills was scenic and awesome with thick rainforest.
Finally, we reached the Gap where we were allowed to go up to Fraser’s according to an hourly timetable. Odd and even(奇数和偶数)hours were designated for ascent and descent(上下坡)as the final few kilometers of the road were too narrow for two-way traffic. When we reached the town centre, a brick clock tower, rustic(乡村的)police station and cute golf course greeted us. We stopped for lunch at a stall serving Chinese food. Then, we got directions to the government bungalow from the locals. It was a 15-minute ride to the clean bungalow that was equipped with kitchen facilities, dining hall and TV. The garden had a playground and barbecue area.
The fog enveloped the bungalow giving it a foreign atmosphere. We looked cool in our jackets as we walked along the road for dinner at some stalls in town that night. We bid goodbye to them and the cool natural surroundings as we made our way back to the polluted city.
1. What can we know from the second paragraph?A.The children were worried about the journey. |
B.The journey to Kuala Kubu was tough. |
C.The family had breakfast at Serendah. |

10 . Amazing lost places around the world
Kolmanskop
Once the richest town in Africa, today Kolmanskop is sinking into the Namibian desert. The discovery of diamonds here around 100 years ago caused this remote place to experience a boom (繁荣), and in no time at all, an entire town reveal itself out of the sand. Not only was there a hospital, a power plant and a theatre, but also an ice factory and a swimming pool—all in the middle of the desert!
The Aniva lighthouse
Built by the Japanese on a small island between Japan and Russia, the Aniva lighthouse and its island went to the Russians after the Second World War. Though dynamic once, the seven-storey building has lain abandoned for years. Where once noisy diesel (柴油) generators kept the machinery running, today there’s only the sound of waves hitting the rocks.
Houtouwan
Houtouwan on Shengshan Island was once home to around 2,000 fishermen and their families. Today most of the people you meet in this Chinese village are tourists. The majority of the inhabitants (居民) left for the mainland in the early 1990s. Reasons for the near total abandonment include shortage of food delivery.
The Igloo Hotel
This resort has never seen a paying guest! The Igloo Hotel in Alaska, US was primarily meant to attract visitors from the nearby Denali National Park. However, the builder didn’t observe official building regulations and also chose a location that was too remote, so the hotel was never completed. The half-finished building however, continues to suffer wind and weather a half a century later.
