2 .

Located in the northeast of Italy, Venice is well-known for its cultural treasures, romantic atmosphere and unusual living-on-water experience. The city spreads out over 118 islands, which are linked by more than 400 bridges, in the Venetian Lagoon.

Venice’s historical center consists of six regions. San Polo in the middle and San Marco in the south, the busiest main regions, are linked by the Rialto Bridge. The famous stone arch bridge crosses Venice’s main waterway — the Grand Canal. When night falls, many tourists enjoy dinner at the outside tables by the Grand Canal while watching colorfully lit boats going by.

Near the end of the S-shaped Grand Canal lies St. Mark’s Basilica, a must-see. Inside, beautiful mosaics tell stories of Bible figures. Nearby are the Doges Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. These were made famous by Lord Byron, “I stood in Venice on the Bridge of Sighs, a palace and prison on each hand.” Legend has it that if a couple passes under the bridge, their love will last forever.

In the square outside the Basilica, lovers of literature can sit at Caffe Florian, regarded as the oldest coffee house in Europe. Charles Dickens, Henry James as well as Lord Byron enjoyed the wonderful drink here.

Art lovers should buy a museum pass and visit some of the city’s unusual museums. They can view works by Venetian masters like Giovanni, Titian and Tintoretto.

On five small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano has been home to glass-makers since 1291. Tourists can visit factories, studios and the Glass Museum. Glass artists produce everything from simple souvenir pieces to beautiful works of modern art. Only glassworks made using traditional methods on Murano can be called Murano Glass. The nearby island of Burano is famous for lace making and colorful houses. Looking at the colorful houses and kaleidoscopic streets makes people feel as if they were walking in the fairy tale.

The City of Water promises beauty of all kinds, and it definitely lives up to its promise.

4 . Madagascar, the world’s second-largest island country located off Africa’s eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar’s wildlife creates some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon’i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.

Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth’s eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2, 800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 meters. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar’s most visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa’s oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.

The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or visitor center and generates little money for local communities.

Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.

1. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in the first paragraph mean?

2. What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs?
A.It is a big forest.B.It has eight baobab species.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者一家人喜欢旅游,在他18岁前,他们已经去过了加拿大的所有省份。作者在文章中讲述了他们一家在纽芬兰-拉布拉多省旅游时的经历。

5 . I’d spend every summer vacation with my parents when I was a kid. They used to spend two to four weeks each year travelling. And because we couldn’t afford to stay in a hotel, camping was the only way. By the time I left home at 18, I’d visited every province in Canada. As I look back at my camping memories, the one in Battle Harbor stands out most.

It takes a long time to drive to Newfoundland from Ontario, especially when you’ve got six people packed into a minivan. When we arrived on the island, it was raining heavily every day. Therefore, we kept driving north, hoping to avoid it. We jumped onto a ferry (渡船) to Labrador and moved our way up the coast of this less-populated region.

The scenery in Labrador is sublime. You can see long white sand beaches along the Atlantic coast that look inviting, but the water is extremely cold. While standing at the top of a lighthouse, my dad said, “This will be the new Caribbean once global warming hits.”

We soon discovered Battle Harbor, a historic fishing village. In the mid-1800s it had a population of 350 and was considered the unofficial capital of Labrador. When I was there in 2003, it was more like a ghost town, with some broken fish-drying shelves left, reminding me that fishing trade was common. I clearly remember feeling the furthest from anything that I’ve ever felt. Multiple ferry rides and 600 miles separated me from the nearest major city of St. John’s, which is still considered a remote relative to the rest of Canada,

If you’re curious about Labrador, I highly recommend a 2013 film called The Grand Seduction. It’s a delightful comedy about a small fishing village called Tickle Head that’s struggling to figure out its future.

1. What happened when the author’s family reached Newfoundland?
A.They missed several ferries.B.They met with the rain.
C.They found no place to camp.D.They ran out of petrol.
2. What does the underlined word “sublime” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Plentiful.B.Enjoyable.C.Precious.D.Attractive.
3. What can we learn about Battle Harbor from the text?
A.It’s a deserted town.B.It’s a good place for campers.
C.It’s a close town to America.D.It’s separated from major cities.
4. Why does the author recommend the 2013 film in the end?
A.To show his concern about a village.B.To satisfy the readers’ curiosity about camping.
C.To promote the popularity of the film.D.To help the readers know Labrador better.
