Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada to visit their cousins in Halifax. They decided     1     (fly) to Vancouver first and then take the train. The thought of crossing the whole country by rail was     2     (excite) for them.

They spent two days in Vancouver. There they took a boat ride,     3     (visit) an island and saw the beautiful mountains looking out over the city.

From Jasper, they caught the train bound     7     Toronto. One of the train’s first stops was in Edmonton, whose daily     8     (temperature) in winter average -10℃. From Edmonton, the train headed southeast across the great Canadian Prairie.

After another day on the train, they     9     (eventual) reached Winnipeg. They travelled through the night and the next morning they reached Toronto,     10     capital of Ontario. Their trip from Vancouver to Toronto had taken four days in all.

Recently, along with my parents and several     1     (journalist), I traveled to Shangri­la, a city in Yunan Province, which appeals     2     huge numbers of tourists. We first went to the Potatso National Park, which     3     (stretch) across vast forests, wetlands, lakes, meadows, and several villages. At Shudu Lake, we saw horses, cows, and yaks enjoying the sunlight and eating grass contentedly. As a nature lover like me, you can imagine how blessed I felt     5    (see) the sight. A skywell, or “tian jing” in Mandarin, is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China. Less     1    (expose) to the outdoor environment makes a skywell different from a northern Chinese courtyard. Skywells are    2     common residents in large areas of southern and eastern China had in the past.

In today’s rapidly urbanising China, fewer and fewer people live in skywell dwellings,     3     a revival(重新流行) of interest in traditional Chinese architecture is leading some of historic buildings with skywells     4     (restore) for modern times. However, there are some challenges for bringing skywells into modern designs.
