An adventure in Africa

30 June, Morocco

My parents and I had finally arrived at Merzouga. The unending sand dunes that marked the     1     (begin) of the Sahara stretched before us. I took a long look at the yellow roadside sign that told us we were entering a “fragile natural environment”. The wind     2     (blow) grains of sand from the tops of the     3     (dune), the sun was beating down hard and bright, and there was not a plant to be seen.

Eventually, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I wondered which camel would be my ride the next day and grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire.

3 July, Kenya

When my father, against my mother's advice, had decided to drive through a large pool of water, our car was well and truly stuck     4     the mud.     5     (fortune), two tall slim local people realized that we were totally     6     (help) and wandered over and pushed     7     (we) free.

We found a parking space next to our hut. There were five similar huts, all lined up     8     (face) Mount Kilimanjaro. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains,     9     were alive with the African wildlife we had come to see. It was indeed the greatest show on the Earth.

We got out of the car, and I placed ham sandwiches, sausages and a bunch of bananas on a small wooden table. It was then     10     I noticed as mall grey monkey sitting on a tree a few metres away and eating a banana.

5 . If you're visiting Florence, Italy, you've got to see the world-famous Uffizi Gallery. But why? Because that's what   ________ does in Florence? Because you feel it ________ to post a selfie in front of the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus (《维纳斯的诞生》)?

Those are obviously ________ reasons. We shouldn't go to places because they're world-famous; instead, we should go to fully ________ what makes them world-famous. But that requires a well-planned visit, not just following the ________, taking pictures and then checking it off on your wish list.

For example, you cannot visit the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像) at all without serious ________. “On busy days, we're taking 25 , 000 people on the small island, and only 500 a day get to the statue,” said Michael Amato, the lead park ranger (管理人) for the Statue of Liberty National Monument. “Right now we're sold out until two months later.” So you need to check when the ticket is available ________.

Still, a lot can ________ before you actually go on the trip. “Keep yourself up to date,” said Jade McKellar, director of the visitor experience centre at the Sydney Opera House. “________ us on social media and sign up for our newsletter.” Even without a booking, visitors can often buy tickets for events that run 363 days a year. But like visiting many sites, a true visit means spending a full day, something a(n) ________ traveller might be unwilling to do.

Another reason to set aside more time: visitors can check out the less famous but equally worthwhileoften beautifully complementary (互补的) sites ________. Susan Greaney, a senior historian at English Heritage, who is in charge of Stonehenge (巨石阵), ________ a trip to the two history museums with Stonehenge-relevant exhibitions. Each of them is less than a 30-minute drive but likely to be ________ on a one-day tour of London. Of course, you can simply ________ the world-famous attraction. If you're ________ museums by the time you get to Florence, forget the Uffizi and take advantage of other things Florence offers. Don't worry about what your friends will think.

7 . Manchester is the “capital” of the northwest of England. Situated on the east bank of the River Irwell, it is a lively busy city with a large student population. Although it was once seen as only a dull industrial place, in recent years Manchester has become the “in” place. It is well-known for its clubs, its fashion and its music, not to mention its world-famous football team, Manchester United.

There is plenty to see in Manchester and something to suit all taste. For example, you have a taste for the Orient in Chinatown, home to Manchester’s large Chinese population. Another place to visit is the historical Castlefield area, which contains the first urban heritage park in Britain. Here you can walk around the museums and experience the atmosphere of the 19th century’s Manchester.

Football fans need not feel left out; they can always make a trip to the Old Trafford Manchester United Museum which also contains a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.

It’s easy to find your way around the city center and you’re never too far away from a bus, which will take you wherever you want to go. However, many people prefer walking in the city where there’s so much to see, and much of it is off the main travel lines.

8 . German has a word “wanderlust” which means “the desire to travel” if it’s translated into English. Nowadays the opportunity to travel is endless. Thanks to low-cost airfares, travelling abroad is very accessible and sometimes it’s even cheaper to fly out of the country than to travel within your own country. So, yes, travelling is cheap but there have to be other reasons to travel and you’re right; there are plenty!

I have always had this feeling of wanderlust. It started from me wanting to explore my local woods at the back of my garden as a young girl and as I have grown, so has my sense of adventure. And I found my local woods being replaced with the Brazil wetland. The thing with travelling is that it’s always different. Even if you go to the same country, to the same town and stay in the exact same hotel, it will be a completely different experience. The people you meet will be different, and they will tell you their own travelling stories: stories of holiday romances, holiday horror stories and stories that seem so outrageous that you can hardly believe them until something similar happens to you. You find yourself becoming one of those people telling you tales.

Or maybe the difference is yourself? Maybe you have changed since last time you were there. And that’s the thing with travelling — it changes you. When you travel you are forced into immersing yourself in a new culture and whether it’s eating delicious food, or staying with a family where neither of you can speak a common language and you have to communicate by gestures and smiles, the experience may give you itchy feet to do it all again. Although wanderlust is originally a German word, the English idiom “to have itchy feet” captures a similar idea. Someone who has itchy feet needs to leave or travel. This desire to explore is found not only in languages but also in us.

1. What is the most important part of travelling according to Paragraph 2?
A.You can have different experiences.B.You can hear many travelling stories.
C.You are able to take more adventures.D.You will experience holiday romances.
2. What does the word “outrageous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Interesting.B.Surprising.C.Moving.D.Disappointing.
3. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A.Travelling abroad at once.B.Communicating by gestures.
C.Experiencing a different culture.D.Staying with a family to have delicious meals.
4. What’s the purpose of the writer to write the passage?
A.To give various reasons for travelling.B.To encourage people to travel around.
C.To explain the German word “wanderlust”.D.To share the writer’s travelling experiences.
