Since I was first in China, my life, and China itself,
5 . One of my first international trips as an adult was traveling around the Caribbean. I checked into my hotel in Jamaica and asked for a recommendation fora local place to eat. The receptionist (接待员) told me that never should I go into the town because it was really dangerous there, but that to my luck — the hotel’s restaurant offered wonderful Caribbean food.
I thought about it carefully: Did I really want to spend all my time on the beach without getting to know a single local?
I was a very inexperienced traveler and very young, but there was only one answer to my question: Absolutely not. I was not going to be visiting a new place and staying in a hotel chain. So out I went.
After only seeing fancy resorts (度假胜地), the reality was hard to swallow. The poverty (贫穷) hit me in the face. A few locals walked to me and were super curious as to what I was doing there in their town, since most tourists didn’t go there. I told them I was interested in meeting them and experiencing their culture. And just like that, I was embraced.
I met more local people, had some food, and then we danced the night away. They had so little, yet they wanted to share it with me. They wanted to make me feel welcome. And they absolutely did.
The next morning all I could think about was how all the money most tourists spend goes to big businesses. The locals have to be thankful if they get a job that pays very low wage, while foreign businesses earn millions.
I have always cared about environmental protection, but this trip made it clear that sustainability (可持续发展) goes well beyond nature and wildlife. From then on I always look for locally — owned hotels, eateries, guides, and souvenirs (纪念品). Sustainability, with everything it includes, became a motto (座右铭) for me and changed the way I travel.

7 . So you’re looking to ski at one of the best? We’ve done the hard work for you.
Breckenridge
Breckenridge is an extremely popular ski destination. It’s undoubtedly an awesome mountain to ride, but it can also get discouragingly crowded. This is not surprising given all the things Breckenridge has going for it: affordable lodging (借宿), an abundance of slopes and North America’s highest lift. The town atmosphere is fun and relaxing, plus there are a ton of shopping, dining, and drinking options to choose from. With so much to offer, Breckenridge makes for a great ski resort that suits all budgets.
Aspen Snowmass
Aspen is the ultimate ski destination for the rich and has evolved into four separate ski areas: Aspen, Snowmass, Buttermilk, and Aspen Highlands. They’re all linked by a shuttle system, accessible with a single ticket, and gathered around one of the greatest ski towns in the world. Aspen is truly the king of apres-ski (滑雪后的社交娱乐) with endless dining and nightlife options! It’s also one of the few ski resorts in Colorado where you won’t be affected by altitude sickness. For all the appeal that brings celebrities here, Aspen does come at a price.
Jackson Hole
Jackson Hole is infamous for its extreme terrain (地形) and steeps with the most continuous vertical in the US. Although it has the reputation of an expert’s paradise, recent improvements have made intermediate terrain easier to access. On the other side, Jackson Hole is not ideal for first-timers and kids due to the lack of beginner terrain. Crowds can also be an issue. If you’re looking for ski-in/ski-out access, stay in Teton Village which has a handful of bars; if not, the town of Jacks.

10 . Have you heard of Yangshi Lei? For some 200 years, the Lei family provided their design and architectural talent to the Qing Dynasty as imperial builders. Spanning seven generations, their skills along with excellent craftsmanship ensured that they rose to great fame and influence in China. In their later work, they incorporated details of the southern architectural style and garden design ideas in their designs.
One of the places showing this is the Summer Palace. Situated in Haidian District, northwest of Beijing, it shows the beauty and the grandeur of royal gardens. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List and described it as “a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design.” With over 3,000 man-made structures, which include bridges, pavilions, and corridors, even the lake area alone is a showcase of many of the Lei family’s excellent designs.
Kunming Lake is designed to represent the traditional Chinese gardening practice of “one pond, three hills.” There are three small islands within Kunming Lake: Nanhu Island, Zaojiantang Island, and Zhijingge Island.
Many features of Kunming Lake are inspired by the scenery from the region south of the Yangtze River. In particular, the West Dike is a recreation of the famous Sudi Dike on West Lake in Hangzhou. The causeway, which can be walked across, cuts diagonally through the southern part of the lake. Like the Sudi Dike, the West Dike is connected by six bridges, each with its own distinctive style. The largest bridge on Kunming Lake, however, is the 17-Arch Bridge. It combines features of the Precious Belt Bridge in Suzhou and the Lugou Bridge in Beijing. The entire bridge is 150 meters long and eight meters wide.
If you can’t go further than Beijing, then don’t miss the National Library of China. This is where most of the Lei family’s architectural design drafts are kept. These include projective drawings, front and side elevations, revolving drawings, and even some architectural models which look remarkably like digital models made today. This shows the advanced drawing technology and skill of the Lei architects. Their architectural ability was way ahead of their time.
Like the Summer Palace, many others of the Lei family’s structures have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Also, in 2007, their architectural drawings and models were included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. The Lei family’s significant influence on Chinese imperial architecture ensures that their work is still remembered and appreciated.
