4 . SHARK CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch of South Africa’s coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world’s most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.

The DAY-BY-DAY schedule

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.

Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!

Day 3+: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conservation initiatives on land too.

Last day: On the final day of your project you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.

The price is £829,including the voluntary work programme with accommodations,   airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfasts daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week.

From ancient times to the present, Qinghai Lake is called "blue sea" because of the natural beauty reflected on it. As to the area, it is the     1     (large) inland and salt water lake in China. Shaped like an ellipse (椭圆), Qinghai Lake reaches 28.71m at the deepest point but     2    (average)19m overall. Due to the high altitude, its weather is very cool,     3     is why it is often selected as a summer resort (旅游胜地) .

Qinghai Lake presents     4     as a really good place for travelers and it offers year-round     5    (please). Many prefer when it is a green and lively world. Many birds     6    (attract) to this beautiful lake, resulting in this place     7     (be) a kingdom for birds' watchers. Every year in July, Qinghai Lake is central to the popular bicycle racing and cycling around it is     8     great way to enjoy the scenery.

Tibet autonomous region in Southwest China, home to the highest plateau(高原) on Earth, is known as the “roof of the world”. It’s a paradise for tourists with its towering snow mountains, vast grasslands, peaceful lakes and breathtaking views. Must-visit places include the Potala Palace - a UNESCO world heritage site, Mount Qomolangma, Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon and more.

Tibet is also famed for its rich ethnic culture, including the Tibetan dance, age-old thangka painting and Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa - traditional Tibetan bathing for a medical purpose which was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2018.

Neighboring the Chinese capital city of Beijing, Tianjin rests between the northern Yanshan Mountains and the coastal plain. Adjacent to the sea and rivers, it carries distinct ecological beauty.

Tianjin is where Eastern and Western cultures meet. It has many precious historical sites, former residences of celebrities and foreign-style architecture. Famous tourist destinations include the Tianjin Eye, the Huangyaguan Great Wall, and the Five Big Avenues area, which hosts about 2,000 villas in various Western styles built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Southwest China’s Chongqing is largely built on mountains and surrounded by rivers; thus it is known as the “mountain city”. Many people are drawn to Chongqing by its delicious food - especially its signature spicy hotpot - and natural scenery.

Boasting the largest number of hotpot restaurants in China, Chongqing was named “China’s Hotpot City” by the China Cuisine Association in 2007. Statistics show there are more than 50,000 hotpot eateries across the city. With more than 3,000 year of history, Chongqing still preserves traditional culture and lifestyles.

9 . Educational travel can consist of a simple excursion, such as visiting your local post office, or a longer trip, such as a trip to Egypt to see the pyramids up close.    1    . Consider planning educational travel with your children, in your own town or to other places in the world. 

Time With Family

Taking your children on educational traveling experiences ensures that your family will be spending quality time together. According to New Mexico State University, time spent with parents can help children to feel secure in their relationship and may help parents to get to know their kids better.     2    . 

Hands-on Learning

Outside of school, a child on an educational trip is free to search deeply into whatever he is learning about. An archaeological dig, for example, provides the opportunity for a child to experience the sights, sounds and experience of digging for and identifying fossils.     3    . Your child may be able to decorate a cookie at a bakery excursion or milk a cow during a visit to a nearby farm.

If you have the opportunity to take your child on a vacation to another country, she will acquire an appreciation for the differences and similarities that exist between different cultures. Tasting foreign foods, hearing different languages and visiting homes in other countries can be an eye-opening experience for a child or an adult.

New Perspective on History

    5    . Her preteen son, who had always considered history boring, fell in love with American history after hearing storytellers tell shocking tales of the experiences of people during the Civil War. Seeing and experiencing historical sites can make history come alive for young people.

10 . Dürer’s Journeys

Time: 6 March 2023-13 June 2023       Location: Sainsbury wing

The first major UK exhibition of German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer in nearly 20 years. Through paintings, drawings and letters, this exhibition follows his travels across Europe, bringing to life the artist himself, and the people and places he visited.

‘Dürer’s Journeys’ will bring together loans from museums and private collections across the world, including the artist’s ‘Madonna and Child’.

Artemisia

Time: 4 April 2023-26 July 2023       Location: Sainsbury Wing

In 17th-century Europe when women artists were not easily accepted, Artemisia was exceptional (非凡的). She challenged traditions and became a successful artist and one of the greatest storytellers of her time.

In this exhibition of her work in the UK, see her best-known paintings including ‘Judith beheading Holofernes’, as well as herself portraits (肖像) and recently discovered personal letters.

Impressionist Decorations

Time: 11 September 2022-9 January 2023       Location: Sainsbury Wing

From the 1860s to the 1920s, the Impressionists tried to bring the outdoors inside, turning landscapes and scenes of modern life into paintings and decorated objects for the home.

Discover the Impressionists’ decorative works through over eighty paintings and panels by leading figures including: Manet, Monet and Renoir.

The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Raphael

Time: Opening spring 2023       Location: North Galleries

In the year that marks the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, we present one of the first-ever exhibitions to explore his complete career.

The exhibition looks at his celebrated paintings and drawings as well as his work in architecture, poetry, and design for sculpture.

With loans from the Hermitage, the Louvre, etc, this is an opportunity to see the width of Raphael’s skill and creativity.
