3 . The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most diverse places in America, a wonderful place filled with people from all backgrounds. Each of them drew something different from their own experience. Their stories are the focus of Status Update, an exhibition of 14 projects offered by Dundon and former WIRED contributor Pete Brook. The show at SOMarts uses personal tales to show the Bay Area’s culture.

The Bay Area is a microcosm (缩影) of the national melting pot, a place where people of color comprise 58 percent of the overall population and are a majority in four of the region’s five countries, San Francisco in particular is the type of place where you can’ t walk down the street without hearing another language. Yet the change is not all for the better. The gap between rich and poor is widening at a frightening speed, and San Francisco is becoming less diverse as minorities escape from the city for more affordable communities elsewhere in the region.

Status Update reflects these changes and the challenges they bring. Joseph Rodriguez’s Faces of Foreclosure features quiet images of people like Ethel Gist, who lost her home in the East Bay suburb of Brentwood six years ago. Photographer Sam records Oakland resident Shannon and his efforts to provide for his daughter. And Laura Morton documents millennials (千禧一代 )hoping to make their way to the top in Silicon Valley in her series Wild West Tech.

Status Update starts a conversation about how the Bay Area is changing, and what people can do to build up a more just equitable (公正的) society. “I hope people walk away from this show with a little more respect for our neighbors and communities and the ways we depend on one another.” Dundon says. “we’re all out here together”

5 . The night is completely black. But the darkness of a hill inside the crater of Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen Volcano is lit up like a holiday light show. Tourists gather at the volcano to see what look like glowing blue rivers of Java. But they aren’t rivers of lava. They’re rivers of glowing sulfur (硫磺).

Glowing red lava flowing from an erupting volcano isn’t unusual. Glowing sulfur is. Hot, sulfur-rich gases escape constantly from fumaroles (喷气孔) in Kawah Ijen’s crater. Scientists were told that sulfur miners on the volcano sometimes use torches to light the sulfur. The blue flames make Kawah Ijen popular with tourists. who watch from a safe distance.

Sulfur is common in volcanic gas, and it can be used to produce many things. But it’s so plentiful in Kawah Ijen’s crater that miners make a dangerous daily journey into the crater to collect sulfur from a fumarole. “The local people pipe the gases from the fumarole through pipes,” says scientist John Pallister. He has walked into the crater himself, wearing a gas mask for protection against the clouds of acid that rise from the lake. “They use water from a spring to cool the pipes,” he says. This causes gases to change into liquid sulfur. The sulfur then cools and hardens into rock. Using this method, miners get more usable rock faster than if they just collect pieces.

Miners face another hazard: a huge eruption. Kawah Ijen’s last big eruption was almost 200 years ago, but the volcano is still active. Indonesian scientists want to find a way to predict a big eruption in time to keep everyone safe. But the deep acid lake makes it difficult to pick up the usual signals that warn of a coming volcanic eruption.

For example, certain gases are usually richer right before an eruption. But in this lake, those gases disappear into the deep water before they can register on the geologists’ equipment.

As scientists search for ways to predict this unusual volcano’s behavior, Kawah Ijen’s blue fires continue to attract audiences who appreciate the volcano’s amazing glow.

6 . Canadians have many natural wonders with enough lakes, mountains and rivers to explore fora lifetime. Here are some of the best waterfalls in Canada.

Niagara Falls are the most famous waterfalls in Canada. They are actually made up of three different falls, with Horseshoe Falls being the only one located on the Canadian side. Different viewing choices are available including the Hornblower boat cruise(游船). In 2007, the base of the falls was referred to as “World’s End” in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Bridal Veil Falls are located in the east of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and really do look like their name, with water gently pouring over smooth rock. An easy 15-minute walk to the falls takes you through rich leaves. Picnic tables are available, and there are lots of chances for viewing wild plants and animals along the way.

Takakkaw Falls are the second-highest waterfalls in Canada. After a drive up a wandering road, these falls are only a short hike from the parking lot. Even though the falls can be seen from far away, the wonderful up-close views, impressive sound and cold mist provide an awe-inspiring (使人敬畏的)sensory experience.

Coming in at twice the height of Niagara Falls, Virginia Falls are located on the South Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories. Virginia Falls are also called “Nailicho”, which means “big river falling” in the South Slavey language. These falls are very much out-of-the-way, which means they receive only about 1,000 visitors every year.

10 . It’s often hard to find family holidays that everyone will enjoy. Cruises (海上航游) can be fun,but may offer activities either for small children or adults,with not much for teenagers.

Fifteen­-year-­old Josh Sandford and his 13-­year-old sister Rowena took a cruise last year, on a ship called the Rega. “Before we left, I’d spent ages looking at the brochure (宣传册), and all the activities on offer, so I was really looking forward to it,” says Josh. “When we got on, I could see they had activities that teenagers could join in, so we couldn’t really say the brochure was wrong. But they were a bit boring—things like old movies we’d seen before. I wish there’d been somewhere for people of my age to just hang out together. My parents really enjoyed it, but they were disappointed that we didn’t. ”

Josh’s parents had almost decided they’d never take their family on a cruise again when they heard about some new cruises that were specially for families with teenagers. So earlier this year the Sandford family set off again,this time on a ship called the Flora. “We did some tours organised by the Flora when the ship stopped in different ports (港口),” says Josh. “We went off and explored some old ruins. I was worried it’d be boring,but I have to admit the ruins were actually quite cool. ”

“The biggest difference was the activities on board,though,like a great gym and two pools. There was a fantastic rock­climbing wall,too,although lots of the teenagers on board didn’t seem to want to try it. Maybe they were too scared,as it was really high. But my sister immediately managed to get all the way up it,so I just had to do the same!”

Josh and Rowena’s family had such a good time on their last cruise that they’re thinking of going again—in fact,they’re already saving up for it!
