I grew up in a small town about a hour outside of Chicago. There were only a handful of local shops and cafes, and everyone know their neighbors as there were only twenty thousands people in the whole town! My parents used to let my brother and me walking to and from the kindergarten every day, and we were allowed to do whichever we liked before dark. The only thing we had to worry about was getting bite by insects or getting sunburned from staying outdoor for too long! After high school, I went to college in the city. Taking the subway was much faster than riding my bike. People from all over the world spoke languages I never heard before. There were huge department stores, where sold everything. The entertainment at all hours was my most favorite thing about the city.

The diverse plants that attract a wide range of birds make these gardens a wonderful place to start. Mark your calendar for the Arboretum's popular Hummingbird Days, a family-friendly festival that celebrates the tiny birds on March 5th and 6th.
Natural Bridges State Beach
This scenic park is excellent for bird watchers due to its wide sampling of local habitats. Over 250 bird species have been recorded in the area.

Birdsong fills the air at this peaceful oasis less than a 10-minute walk from the fun of the Santa Cruz Beach. A walkway allows visitors a front-row view of birds such as American Coots.
Watsonville Wetlands
The wetlands provide a year-round home for local birds and serve as a stop for migratory birds visiting from faraway. Drop by the Nature Centre for exhibits, maps, and suggestions for best spots to visit.
Birding Tips
●The early birder gets the worm. You’re likely to see more birds earlier rather than later in the day.
●No two visits are likely to be the same. Varying times and seasons bring different birds and behaviour.
●No matter how cute those little birds are, you should resist feeding them with your bread. It's unhealthy for the bird and the surrounding ecosystem.

5 . Visitors to this year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival can explore the music, history, art and food of Wales. This small country in the United Kingdom is known for its music, sports, beautiful natural areas and ancient history. Visitors to the festival can also learn about the country's language and industry.
Visitors to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival can start their exploration of Wales by learning about its native language, Welsh. Welsh is one of the oldest languages in the world. The first lesson to learn is the Welsh word for Wales: Cymru.
Festival visitors can learn more from Iona Hughes, a Welsh teacher in the country's capital, Cardiff. Welsh and English are now the official languages of Wales. But the English people did not always support the use of Welsh. Today, about twenty percent of the population of Wales speaks the language fluently. Iona Hughes said, “It's quite wonderful to see how the language has developed and how the language has grown especially in the last thirty years. I remember as a child actually saying that Welsh was a dying language, and now I'm proud to say that actually it isn't—it's a thriving language.”
The Welsh people are serious about language and the spoken word. They hold competitions to celebrate their language in literature and music.
Wales is also known for its natural beauty. It has hundreds of lakes and over one thousand kilometres of coastline.
The festival events also tell about Welsh industries. You can see an expert make thread out of wool from a sheep. Or you might learn about traditional Welsh building materials like slate.
And, no visit to Wales would be complete without a pub where people can sit down and drink a beer.
