文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了伟大建筑作品除了具有美感以外,还要有耐久性和功能性。

1 . What makes a work of architecture great? Most people would argue that aesthetics (美感) are the most important.    1     However, Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio believed that we should also consider durability and function when assessing a structure. The Rostonville Library in my city is a great example of Vitruvius’s principles.

Constructed entirely of granite—a hard and tough stone, the library is durable. It can withstand environmental pollution. For example, it is resistant to acid rain. Moreover, its granite structure is stable so it’s more likely to survive an earthquake.    2     It uses solar energy for heating and a rooftop garden for cooling.

3     Providing free access to print and digital information, it conveys a feeling of openness and accessibility. Furthermore, the entire library is on one level, and it has an open design—there are no inner walls or dividers. In addition, large windows let in plenty of natural light, so it’s easy to see and get to each department within the library.

Finally, the library is beautiful, with aesthetically pleasing details both inside and out. The large windows are copper-framed (铜框的). The copper color provides an interesting contrast against the color of the granite structure and it will remain as the copper ages. Growth from the rooftop garden, which reaches down the sides of the building, adds to the aesthetics of the building.     4

Durability, functionality and beauty make the Rostonville Library a great structure. Architects who follow Vitruvius’s principles help to make the city more pleasant to live in.     5

A.The library is also sustainable.
B.It is true that beauty is critical.
C.This is not the only concern of the architects.
D.The library was designed with functionality in mind.
E.It softens the lines of the structure and helps it to fit into its natural surroundings.
F.Plusthe library was built on the edge of the city parksurrounded by native plants.
G.Buildings that fulfill these criteria offer both peace of mind and beauty for their users.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了几个融入自然元素的建筑设计。

2 . Trees, plants and flowers are all around us and we enjoy their beauty every day. We are so used to them that we may even take them for granted without realising how much inspiration they have given us. In fact, nature has inspired many of the most fascinating designs around us.     1

People who are interested in exploring the relationship between art and science will enjoy Singapore’s ArtScience Museum. Shaped like a lotus flower, it appears to float above the waterfront promenade(滨海步道) with the water surrounding it. Its roof collects rainwater and channels it 35 metres down to a waterfall in the centre of the space.     2     Visitors are often amazed to find themselves in an urban building that so truly captures the beauty of natural forms.

Based on the form and process of termite(白蚁) mounds(土堆), Harare’s Eastgate Centre is a superb example of biomimicry(仿生学). It has a “skin” covered in holes.     3     At night, the heat absorbed by the wall during the day warms the cool air, creating a suitable temperature so that people can stay inside comfortably. The design reduces the need for traditional air conditioning and heating systems, saving a lot of energy and costs.

4     The surface of the apartment building is covered in panels that contain algae. The panels can capture heat from the sun and convert it into energy that powers the building. And that’s not all — the algae inside the panels can be harvested and used to produce fuel. Therefore, the building not only uses less energy, but also reduces damage to the environment.

Great buildings like these enables us to live in closer harmony with nature.     5     It may be challenging to meet the needs of today while protecting the world of tomorrow, but even the simplest organisms can help teach us how to achieve this.

A.It is also presented in various architectural designs.
B.What we need is to seek more inspiration from nature.
C.The holes are designed to allow air to move freely in and out.
D.The world’s first algae-powered building is in Hamburg, Germany.
E.The water is then recycled through the building’s plumbing system.
F.During the day, warm air is drawn into the building through the holes.
G.The design shows the connection between people and modern city environment.

    4

My mother has always said “ humble(使谦逊) yourself.” I appreciate it because when you travel, depending on your passport, depending on your social class, depending on so many different things, you can go to places with a lot of ego(自我), or you can humble yourself and know that everyone is equal.

What are some things people can do to travel more sustainably(可持续地)?

Single-use plastic is one of the biggest things harming Earth right now, so a lot of my focus is on that.     5     If you’ re in a restaurant and you don’ t have a big appetite, ask for a half portion.

9 . What is the 15-minute city? It’s the urban planning concept that everything city residents need should be a short walk or bike ride away—about 15 minutes from home to work, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, schools, parks and health care. Supporters argue that 15-minute cities are healthier for residents and the environment, creating united mini-communities, boosting local businesses, and encouraging people to get outside, walk, and cycle.

Many cities across Europe offer similar ideas, but Paris has become its poster child. Mayor Anne Hidalgo has sought to fight climate change by decreasing choking traffic in the streets and fuel emissions. In 2015, Paris was 17th on the list of bike-friendly cities; by 2019, it was 8th. Car ownership, meanwhile, dropped from 60 percent of house holds in 2001 to 35 percent in 2019. The 15-minute city figured largely in Hidalgo’s successful 2020 re-election campaign. The idea has also gained support in the U.S.

It clearly won’t work everywhere: Not every city is as centralized and walkable as Paris. Some car-dominated cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix would be hard-pressed to provide everything people need within walking distance. In addition, some urban planners argue that the 15-minute city could increase the separation of neighborhoods by income. Neighborhoods equipped with all the conveniences required by the 15-minute city also tend to have high housing costs and wealthier residents.

Despite some resistance, the basic principles behind the 15-minute city are influencing planning in cities around the world, including Melbourne, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Singapore, and Shanghai. Urban designer and thinker Jay Pitter says cities where basic needs are within walking distance create more individual freedom than needing to drive every where. “In a city where services are always close by,” he says, “mobility is a choice: You go where you want because you want to, not because you have to. My fight is not against the car. My fight is how we could improve the quality of life.”

1. Which best describes the 15-minute city?
A.Modern.B.Convenient.
C.Entertaining.D.Smart.
2. What’s the original intention for Paris to advocate the 15-minute city?
A.To address climate issues.B.To beautify the city.
C.To promote the bike industry.D.To help Hidalgo get re-elected.
3. What’s some urban planners’ worry about the 15-minute city?
A.It slows the city’s expansion.
B.It represents a setback for society.
C.It may widen the gap between neighborhoods.
D.It can cause the specialization of neighborhoods.
4. What’s Jay Pitter’s attitude to the concept of 15-minute city?
A.Doubtful.B.Favorable.
C.Critical.D.Uninterested.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四个世界上著名的湖泊。

10 . Longing for the most amazing places on the planet? You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe.

Five Flower Lake

Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province, China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up. Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests include the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey.

Crater Lake

The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon, US, fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago. Its strangest occupant is the “Old Man of the Lake”, a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Water loss in summer is compensated by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years.

Lake Ohrid

Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid “plashica”, a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鳞片) are used to make Ohrid pearls.

Lake Maggiore

Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district, it is shared with Switzerland. Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy’s most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water.

1. What makes Five Flower Lake different from other lakes?
A.Its agreeable climate.B.The rare local wildlife.
C.Its color-changing waters.D.The visibility of waters.
2. How does Crater Lake mainly get water supply?
A.By artificial rain.B.By snow and rain.
C.From nearby streams.D.From an ancient tree.
3. Which lake has a typical warm climate?
A.Five Flower Lake.B.Crater Lake.
C.Lake Ohrid.D.Lake Maggiore.
