文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要介绍的是伦敦这一城市的优点。

1 . London is great. It’s great. Rome and Paris were fine places, but I knew as soon as we landed in London, this was the finest of the three.

There are only two small things which I don’t like about London. First of all, everyone speaks English here. I had so much fun in Rome and Paris. There I could speak in foreign languages. In other words, I made a lot of friends that way. But here everybody can understand me. I don’t have any reason to start up a conversation with a stranger. And the food in restaurants is the other problem with London. It is no good at all! I haven’t had one good meal in the three days we’ve been here.

Since you asked me to write to you about everything I learned on this trip, here is what I’ve learned about London. London is the capital of the UK. It is the largest city and the largest port in England. In addition, it is also one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe. Since the establishment of the city by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, London has had great influence all over the world.

The Thames River runs right through the centre of the city. Someone once called the Thames “liquid history”. It is a very good name. Dozens of armies have crossed it over the past few thousand years. One of the first was the army of Julius Caesar two thousand years ago. And most recently Mr and Mrs Gill.

So far I have only had time to visit one neighbourhood. It is called Bloomsbury. In fact there is a group of writers known as the Bloomsbury Group. It got its name because so many of them lived there. Virginia Woolf was one of them. I know how much you like her novels.

Baker Street is also part of Bloomsbury. Do you remember who once lived on Baker Street?

When I asked Bob this question, he answered, “a man who baked bread, right?” Sherlock Holmes, of course. I won’t have time to find his address. Maybe you will when you come.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。蒙特利尔是加拿大第二大城市,是一座位于过去和未来之间的城市。文章记述了作者在蒙特利尔的旅游经历。

4 . I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.

Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a fourhour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.

After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St.Catherine’s Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.

All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.

However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest Frenchspeaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.

We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we’d head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

D.Montreal often holds fashion shows.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The author often went to China for a visit.
B.The people they met in the diner were kind and helpful.
C.All the people in the diner were locals.
D.The author went to Montreal on business.
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author listened to Canadian radio programmes and chose their first stop as advised.
B.The author took a trip to Montreal — the third largest city in Canada.
