2 . It’s 8 a. m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2028, and you are heading for a business appointment 300 miles away. You step into your circle, a two-passenger air-cushion car, press a series of buttons and the national traffic computer notes your destination, figures out the current traffic situation and signals your car to slide out of the garage. Hands free, you sit back and begin to read the morning paper — which is mashed on a flat TV screen over the car’s dashboard. Tapping a button changes the page.

The car speeds up to 150 mph in the city’s countryside, and then hits 250 mph in less built-up areas, driving over the smooth plastic road. You fly past a string of cities, many of hem covered by the new domes (圆屋顶) that keep them evenly climatized all year round. Traffic is heavy, typically, but there’s no need to worry. The traffic computer, which sends and receives signals to and from all cars on the road between cities, keeps vehicles at least 50 yds apart. There hasn’t been an accident since the system began.

Suddenly your TV phone buzzes. A business partner wants a sketch of a new kind of impeller your firm is producing for sports boats. You reach for your case and draw the diagram with a pencil-thin infrared flashlight (红外线手电筒) on what looks like a TV screen lining the back of the case. The diagram is sent to a similar screen in your partner’s office, 200 miles way. He presses a button and a fixed copy of the sketch rolls out of the machine. He wishes you good luck at the coming meeting and signs off.

Ninety minutes after leaving your home, you slide beneath the dome of your destination city. Your car slows down and heads for an outer-core office building where you’ll meet your colleagues. After you get out, the vehicle parks itself in a garage to await your return. Private cars aren’t allowed inside most city cores. Moving sidewalks and trams (有轨电车) carry the public from one location to another.

1. The traffic computer in your car can ________.
A.keep your car at a safe distance from other cars
B.keep your car at the same speed in different situations
C.keep your car receiving signals of TV programs
D.keep your car driving while avoiding heavy traffic
2. Why are the cities covered by the new domes?
A.To prevent people from being wet in the rain.
B.To stop the climate of the cities changing violently all year.
C.To protect the travelers against the strong sunshine.
D.To make the city have the same weather all year.
3. What will the city be like in the future?
A.No accidents will happen because of heavy traffic.
B.The sidewalk can move itself up and down
C.The road will be built with the plastic material.
D.The car can park itself on a dome to wait for your return.
4. The passage is most probably taken from ________.
A.a popular science magazine
B.a short story collection
C.a research paper
D.a personal diary

5 . Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.

While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like partners than tools. For example, these robots will be able to tell when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more properly to the user.

The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just give general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each person in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.

Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential(潜在的) applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these areas.

Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.

The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not aimed to replace workers, but to work together with other employees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.

1. How are social robots different from household robots?
A.They can control their feelings.
B.They are more like humans.
C.They do the normal housework .
D.They respond to users more slowly.
2. What can a Jibo robot do according to Paragraph 3?
A.Communicate with you and put on performances.
B.Answer your questions and make requests.
C.Take your family pictures and deliver milk.
D.Obey your orders and remind you to take pills.
3. We can learn from the last paragraph that social robots will ______.
A.be our workmates
B.train employees
C.improve technologies
D.take the place of workers
4. The underlined word“recommendations”in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by_______.
A.suggestionsB.commandsC.expressionsD.bargains

7 . According to a new report, the future may be here sooner than we think. A team of academics and researchers predict (预测) underwater cities, personal drones (无人机) and giant skyscrapers (摩天大楼) by the year 2116. The team even predict that we will be vacationing on the moon or even on Mars just in 100 years.

The team of academics include architects, futurists and speakers from the University of Westminster. A lot of the technology needed to do the things predicted is already here; it just needs to be scaled up (扩大) and become more cost effective (划算的). Experts say that due to the increase in population, humans will live in large urban centers consisting of super tall skyscrapers, taller than anything we have ever seen. Other than going up, the report suggests that there will be “earth-scrapers” going as far as 25 stories underground. Meanwhile, they believe that there will be “bubble cities” that produce oxygen using the surrounding water. What’s more, drone technologies are predicted to grow at a rapid rate enabling the everyday man to travel anywhere he wants to go in his personal drone.

The report also predicts that the food industry will be reshaped by 3D printing technology. Families will be able to download whatever meal they want from databases of popular chefs and restaurants. Then once you’re done with your 4-course 3D printed meal, you can have a large drone take your whole house to a vacation spot you like and have your dinner while enjoying the beautiful scenery. This may sound unbelievable, but given advances in modular (模块化) design and large-scale affordable drones, these all may be in store.

Keep in mind that all of these things are just predictions about the future from an independently contracted team, but we are facing an age of rapid development never seen before in human history and these predictions may end up being realized.

Technologies like smart homes and 3D printing will all seem commonplace in the future. To our kids, it will be hard to imagine life without the ability to design and print their toys, or vacation on Mars.

All this technological advancement may sound terrifying to some degree, but you’d better get used to it. Given all the recent advances in medicine, there’s a high likelihood that you may live to see 2116. Then why not see what you can do to help make the future come a little faster?

1. According to the report, future drones will _____.
A.get energy from the surrounding water
B.send humans to the moon or even Mars
C.be owned by ordinary people
D.be mainly used for travel
2. In the future, the food industry will be affected by _____.
A.3D printing technology
B.drone technologies
C.popular databases
D.communication tools
3. What is the author’s attitude towards the predictions in the passage?
A.Uncertain.B.Hopeful.
C.Dissatisfied.D.Uninterested.
4. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Predictions about future life
B.The developments of new technologies
C.The popularity of drone technologies
D.Technologies’influence on food and buildings

8 . Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words or the proper forms of the given words.

The tale of Shangri-La is among the most interesting myths. Not     1     (surprise), then, modern people have been drawn to the dreamland     2     the ruin of time and history has been held back, human beings live in harmony with nature, and the wisdom of the planet is saved for future     3     (generation).

Lost Horizon was a tale for    4     (it) times. The story of Shangri-La itself is a modern one, told by the English novelist James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon (1933). Set in the troubled years before World War Two, the book tells of a community in a lamasery (喇嘛庙), in the lost Tibetan valley of Shangri-La, cut off from the world and from time. All the wisdom of the human race     5     (contain) in this place, in the stored cultural treasures, and in the minds of the people       6     have gathered here in the face of the war.

The book enjoyed great     7     (popular). And when the novel was turned into a Hollywood movie by Frank Capra, it was     8     instant success. These days, the name is part of the language, used everywhere from Nepali airlines and Chinese hotel chains to holiday cottages in Florida and Torquay.

In the 1930s,     9     Western civilisation seemed bent on a path to self-destruction — and when, as Carl Jung put it, “the smell of burning was in the air” — the story had a great charm. And Tibet in the 1930s was still a land of mystery, one of the last unmapped places. Nowadays, of course, the choice of the location of the tale seems more     10     (attract).

9 . Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words or the proper forms of the given words.

Twenty thousand leagues under the sea is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne. The novel tells the classic story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus as is seen from the point of view of Professor Pierre Aronnax, who is commissioned(委托)to find the sea monster responsible for sinking ships.

Ships of several nations spot a(n)     1     (mystery) sea monster, which is considered to be a giant narwhal (独角鲸). The US government gathers an expedition (探险队) in New York to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist (海洋生物学家),     2     happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute     3     (invite) to join the expedition, which he accepts. Canadian whaler Ned Land and Aronnax’s     4     (faith) servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

The ship finds the monster after a long search and then attacks the beast,     5     damages the ship’s rudder (舵). The three people then jump into the water and grasp the “hide of the creature”, which they find, to their surprise, to be a submarine (潜艇) very far ahead of its time. They are quickly captured (俘获) and brought inside the submarine, where they meet its     6     (create) and commander, Captain Nemo.

The rest of the story follows the adventures of the people aboard the submarine, the Nautilus,     7     (build) in secrecy and now roams (漫游) the seas free from any land-based government. Nemo explains that his submarine is     8     (electric) powered. They visit many places under the ocean; some are real-life places, others are fictional. The travelers also use diving suits to hunt sharks and other marine life with air-guns and have an underwater funeral (葬礼) for a crew member who dies     9     an accident occurs under unknown conditions inside the Nautilus.

10 . The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is mostly a desert. However, this has not stopped the country from creating great building projects. On September 26, UAE officials announced another ambitious project — Mars Science City. Expansive deserts and miles of coastline provide plenty of options for safe rocket launches (发射). And its position on the Earth makes it especially appealing as the spin of the Earth provides an extra push, meaning less fuel is needed to get payloads into orbit. All these seem to make it possible.

The Mars City Project, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, will provide a realistic model to simulate (模仿) living on the surface of Mars, the red planet. It is part of the UAE’s Mars 2117 Project to lead the global race to land humans on Mars and be the first to build a settlement there. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, says, “The UAE seeks international support to develop technologies that benefit humans, and lay the foundation of a better future for more generations to come.”

Built outside Dubai, the 1.9 million square feet city is expected to cost $135 million. It will consist of several dome-shaped laboratories, similar to the ones imagined for the first Mars settlers. Scientists from around the word will be invited to conduct research to come up with methods to create food, water and energy, using techniques which can be copied onto the red planet. The living spaces, where the researchers can live for up to a year, will simulate the planet’s conditions as much as possible.

The research city will also include a museum featuring famous space achievements to help educate and inspire children to undertake space exploration and discovery. To discover whether the construction method works on Mars, the museum’s walls will be 3D printed using the sand from the nearby desert. Now, if they would only add some living quarters for the general public to experience life on Mars without leaving Earth, life would be perfect.

1. What can we conclude about the United Arab Emirates?
A.It is short of fine weather.
B.It is a nice place for launching.
C.It can provide adequate fuel supply.
D.It has the greatest architects in the world.
2. What will scientists do in the laboratories?
A.Educate visitors on trips to Mars.
B.Develop the Mars settlers’ imagination.
C.Find ways to produce food, water and energy on Mars.
D.Create a climate-controlled environment for future use.
3. Why will the museum’s walls be 3D printed?
A.To show famous space techniques.
B.To make full use of the nearby desert.
C.To inspire children to love exploration.
D.To test building skills used by Mars settlers.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.UAE to Build Mars Science City
B.UAE’s Great Exploration of Mars
C.UAE to Build First Mars Settlement
D.UAE’s Scientistific Contribution to Humans
