2 . For Beth Terry, when she read an article about how seabirds are being killed by discarded plastics, she realized that it was time to give up plastics.
First, she focused on her kitchen and got rid of the shopping bags and other plastic products. Then she turned to her bathroom. Toothpaste without plastic packaging was extremely hard to find, so she started making her own with baking soda.
Sometimes her personal war on plastics created awkward moments. During a vacation to Disneyland in California to run a half-marathon, Ms Terry and her husband left their reusable cloth bags in the hotel, soon discovering that the local supermarket only had plastic bags. How should they carry her fruits like apples, oranges, pears and melons?
“We just rolled them up in our T-shirts and carried them that way,” said Ms Terry, 54, recalling how she crab-walked back to the hotel to stay true to her principles. “ If I let myself off the hook this time, it would be easier for me to take plastics next time,” she said.
Treating plastics like a drug habit that needs to be kicked is a lifestyle promise being shared by more and more consumers, horrified by tens of millions of tons of plastics created worldwide each year, much of it in the form of single-use items like straws that end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场)or,worse, the oceans.
If you gathered up all your plastic waste each week, as Mr. Terry once did, you would have a small hill on the floor. How should we begin? “The one thing I want to make people know is to go step by step. Don’t try to do everything at once,” said Ms. Terry, who is the author of Plastic-Free:How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too.

4 . Last summer our family excitedly set off on holiday. My parents had never booked such an expensive holiday before and we had certainly NEVER set foot on a Caribbean island!
So it was with eager expectation that we arrived at the airport with our five suitcases—only to be told that our Unity Airlines flight had been cancelled! We hung around the airport despondently until we were re-routed onto a Sky Eagle flight, but we still missed our connecting flight. So they put us onto another flight to JFK Airport, this time with Omega Airlines, and we had to dash like mad through the airport to catch the plane with minutes to spare.
From JFK we boarded our final flight, and it was with some relief that we arrived in St Maarten Island, ready to forget the stresses and strains of actually getting there. However, one vital thing hadn't kept up with us-our luggage.
The laid-back officials in St Maarten Airport didn't seem particularly worried about our missing bags. They phoned Omega Airlines, who blamed Sky Eagle, because they said that the first flight was responsible for the luggage.Sky Eagle blamed Omega, and they all blamed Unity Airlines for canceling the original flight.
Meanwhile, through all the accusations,we only had the clothes we stood up in,so Mum took us on a quick shopping trip and bought tooth brushes, swimming stuff,shorts,flip-flops,and a couple of T-shirts each For two days we waited in St Maarten until we joined our five-day cruise. Dad went to the airport twice a day,but each time the baggage staff said nothing had arrived. So we had to go on the cruise without our luggage. My brother, sister and I weren't much bothered, but our parents were. Dad missed his diving equipment, and Mum was upset about not being able to wear her new summer wardrobe bought especially for our big holiday. The cruise was fantastic, anyway, even though we had to keep washing our few clothes.
When we got back to the airport to go ho me,there was a new set of baggage staff who didn't seem to know anything about anything. My dad was so frustrated by this time,he actually sneaked into the storage room and found four of our bags!If he hadn't done that, they might still be sitting there. He just dragged them out without telling anybody, and we went home. When we arrived back in the States,we found our last bag.It hadn't even left the airport!

6 . For the past three months, Riley Horner, a teenage girl from Illinois, has been waking up every morning thinking it's June 11. What's worse, her memory resets every couple of hours, so she can't even remember things she did or people who she met that day.
Riley's troubles began after she got accidentally kicked in the head by a teenager who was crowd-surfing during a dance. She was taken to the hospital, but doctors there only diagnosed her with a concussion (脑震荡) and sent her home with walking sticks. Tests showed no brain bleed or anything else out of the ordinary, but Riley's family soon noticed that there was something wrong with her. It was like her brain was stuck in the past and refused to make any new memories.
Riley's symptoms have baffled doctors, as they couldn't even find out what's wrong with her, let alone try to fix it. The teen's mother Sarah said that at first doctors told them that Riley's memory might get better as time passed, but it's been three months and her condition has not improved. Now they're saying that she could stay like this forever, which is something Riley's mother cannot accept.
The young girl has been struggling to deal with her condition, but even the simplest of things are really difficult under the circumstances. She always carries detailed notes with her at school, so when her memory resets every couple of hours, she can go over the things she needs to know, like how to find her locker. Almost everything Riley has experienced since June has been wiped clean from her memory.
“We need somebody that knows a little bit more because she deserves better. I mean she wanted to be in the medical field and now she can't even hold a job if she wanted to,” Riley's mother said. “We hope she will get help from certain experts and recover sooner or later.”

The young woman sat crying at one of the back tables of a small restaurant at a fuel service station, on a highway where truck drivers and traveller stopped. Two girls, perhaps four and five years old, watched their mother tensely.
I am a patrolman, which is a policeman who is assigned to patrol a specific route. I am with the Knox County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s Department, and was sent to check on the family after someone telephoned, concerned about the woman’s weeping. A flash of fear crossed the older child’s eyes as I approached her. “Daddy left us,” she said. “He just put our stuff out of the car while we were in the bathroom.”
“Is that so, little lady?” I said. “I want you two to climb on those stools over there and order something to eat.”
Reluctantly they crossed to the stools. I called the waitress to take their order.
“Now, what’s the problem?” I asked the woman.
“Just what my girl said,” she replied, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “ My husband is not cruel — just at the end of his rope. We have no money; we’re flat broke. He thought that we’d get more help alone than if he stayed.”
“Do you have family?”
“The nearest is in Chicago.”
We sat there discussing organisations and government agencies that could help her. When the waitress brought hot dogs and French fries to the little girls, I went to the counter and took out my wallet to pay.
“The owner says no charge,” the waitress said. “We know what’s going on.”

When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!” My mother poured out her praise. I glowed. “What time will Father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him what I had accomplished. My mother said she hoped he would be home around seven. I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out in my finest flourish(花体字). Then I used colored crayon(蜡笔) to draw an elaborate border around it that would do justice to its brilliant content. Then I waited. As 7 o'clock drew near, I confidently placed it right on my father’s plate on the dining-room table.
But my father did not return at seven. I admired my father. He was head of Paramount Studios in Hollywood but he had begun his motion picture career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine even more than my mother.
This evening it was almost 8 o'clock when my father burst in. He was an hour late for dinner. His mood seemed thunderous. He could not sit down but circled the long dining-room table with a drink in his hand, calling down terrible oath(诅咒) on his employees.
Suddenly, he paused and stared at his plate. There was a suspenseful silence. “What is this?” He was reaching for my poem. I lowered my head and stared down into my plate. I was full of anxious daydreams. How wonderful it would be if this very first work of mine drove away the angry clouds that now darkened my important father’s face.
“Ben, a wonderful thing has happened,” my mother began. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide for myself.” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate as he read that poem. It couldn’t have taken very long to read that poem. It was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear him dropping the poem back on the table.
