1 . A couple of days ago I unexpectedly lost my job. It wasn’t anything too important: I was just a carrier for the Scarborough Mirror, delivering newspapers every Wednesday and Friday. But it brought in a good amount of pocket money for a student like me.

During the first week of September I planned to stop my job, as I wanted to focus on my academics with school to start. I found a family on my street who were willing to take over and so I took their names anti numbers and turned them in to my district representative along with my resignation.

That was last week. This Tuesday came and I was supposed to get the newspapers to deliver on Wednesday. They didn’t come. I just assumed there probably wasn’t much to deliver so they would just give me everything tomorrow. It'd happened before so I wasn’t too worried. There was a seed of doubt, however, in my mind, that maybe the handover of this job was misunderstood. But I pushed that thought aside and just went on as usual.

Wednesday morning came and the papers weren’t lying on my driveway as they’d done for the past 9 months. My mom reminded me to call my district representative, who told me the route had indeed been turned over to the other family. She couldn’t have understood my message when I said I would work until September. So much for 2 more weeks of work!

In a way, I’m glad because I don’t have to worry about delivering newspaper in the burning sun. On the other hand, I wasn’t ready to give up my job so early, so the unexpected loss was a tiny blow to me.

Despite these negative feelings, I’m looking forward to the next summer when I’m getting promoted and my wage will rise from what I had with the job, which gave me good experience about hard work and chances to meet my neighbors.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Kenneth Hansen, 46, was working late one May evening two years ago, putting the last pieces of board on a house in Gratiot County, Michigan. He saw a boy crazily waving his arms. Then Hansen heard screaming. Standing on the back porch (门廊)of the house next door was the little boy screaming "Help!", while four dogs barked and ran after him. Hansen knew little about the boy. After all, the boy was just visiting his grandfather during holidays.

At first, Hansen thought it was just a dogfight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're biting something. His feeling proved right when he watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and bit at the boy's leg.

Then, Hansen realized the boy was in a great danger. He raced across the grass, jumped over a six-foot-high fence and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. He screamed and yelled louder until they let go just long enough for Henson to grab the eight-year-old boy, Ethan. But he couldn't grab him under his arms, which would make it harder to run, because the boy was badly injured. Luckily, He found a long wooden stick at the corner. Henson used it to drive the dogs away and held the boy into his arms.

Hansen ran fast across the yard, and the dogs followed him. Hansen ran to the back deck (木制平台). So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a courtyard door, but it wouldn't open. At that time, a dog grabbed Ethan's foot again to get him back from Hansen. Then Hansen pulled on a second door. It sprang open. He rushed inside the house, followed closely by the dogs scratching (抓)at his legs. He opened a bedroom door a crack, pushed Ethan in quickly, then closed it immediately.

3 . People United to Make a Difference

One year ago two lives were joined together with a common purpose. Both were unaware of that purpose until conversations were exchanged. It was discovered that both had a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others.    1     However, they knew that reaching the masses would be impossible without a good plan. Baron Glass and Melinda Thomas worked out a plan to make this a reality.

Mr. Baron Glass, Radio Show Host for The Smoking Glass Hour with Baron Glass, is the face and voice of a show.    2     Topics include, but are not limited to, politics, law, racism, voting rights, women’s rights, helping the poor and homeless, education, health issues, and much more. Special thanks to a team of volunteers who dedicate time each week to help with this project, and to Mr. Ron Spikes of Waco 4 State Trail Ride Radio for allowing Mr. Glass to carry his show on the network for one hour per week.

A few months later, a platform was created to carry Mr. Glass’s messages on a massive scale.    3    WMAD is the all -new 24 hour global radio station. Together, we are now sharing the messages worldwide. The listener base has grown doubly within this short period of time.

4    Although people may have a desire to work or get involved in their own communities, there may be circumstances blocking some to do so. Our campaign allows everyone to get involved right from their own home by simply sharing the Make A Difference photos on social media.

4 . Alexander simply liked singing. He sang in the shower, and he sang while he walked to school. He couldn’t have cared less what he sounded like until Kevin started talking about the tryout for the City Boys’ Choir(合唱团).

“Yeah, I’m attending the tryout this weekend,” he heard Kevin boasting. “With my voice, they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱).” Everyone around the school knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice.

Bright and early Saturday morning, Alexander came to the tryout. Every boy looked nervous except Kevin. When Alexander’s turn came, he pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin’s turn came. As Kevin’s confident voice filled the room, Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.

After the individual performances, Mr Robeson, choir director, put them into groups of four and asked them to sing again as a group. When the groups finished singing, Mr Robeson began the interview process. He asked Alexander about his performance experience and any training he’d received. All Alexander could say was “I just really enjoy singing. I sing all the time, and I want to learn more.”

The next afternoon, Alexander anxiously rode his bicycle to see the list of new members. There must have been some mistake. His name was on the list, and Kevin’s name was not. Curiosity drove Alexander to Mr Robeson for the reason.

“You love singing. Your voice isn’t the best, but with training it will improve quite a bit. Talent alone is not enough. We needed boys who were willing to work hard. We weren’t looking for soloists. We were looking for boys who seemed to have the right voice and attitude to be part of the choir.” On this explanation, Alexander nodded and climbed on his bicycle, singing all the way.

1. What is true about Kevin?
A.He performed solos in the City Boys’ Choir.
B.He was nervous in the tryout.
C.He failed to join the City Boys’ Choir.
D.He was ignored by Alexander.
2. The word “individual” in Paragraph 4 probably means “       ”.
A.particular.B.separate.C.indifferent.D.careful.
3. Why could Alexander win the tryout for the choir?
A.He had a better schedule for practising.
B.He loved to sing and had the right attitude.
C.He was brave enough to try out.
D.He didn’t want to be a soloist.
