1 . Prince Caspian’s parents died. He lived with his uncle, Miraz, the King of Narnia and his aunt. Though he had wonderful toys, he liked best the last hour of the day when the toys had all been put away and Nurse would tell him stories.
He didn’t care much for his uncle and aunt, but about twice a week his uncle would ask him to come and have a walk together.
One day, while they were doing this, the King said, “Well, boy, we must soon teach you to ride and use a sword. You know we have no children, so it looks as if you might have to be King when I’m gone. How shall you like that, eh?”
“I don’t know, Uncle,” said Caspian. “What do you wish?” asked the King. “I wish-I wish — I wish I could have lived in the Old Days,” said Caspian.
Up till now the King had been talking in a tiresome way, which made it quite clear that he wasn’t really interested in what they were saying, but he suddenly gave Caspian a sharp (锐利的) look.
“Eh? What’s that?” he said. “What old days?”
“Oh, don’t you know, Uncle?” said Caspian. “Once there was a White Witch (女巫) and she made herself Queen of the whole country. And she made it so that it was always winter. And then two boys and two girls came from somewhere and killed the Witch and they were made Kings and Queens of Narnia. And so they ruled for a long time and everyone had a lovely time, and it was all because of Aslan.”
“Who’s she?” said the King. If Caspian had been a little older, the tone(语气) of his uncle’s voice would have warned him it would be wiser to shut up. But he talked on...

There was a beaver(河狸) living in the forest, who had a big flat tail and large teeth. Beaver went grocery shopping for food every day. The Animal Grocery Store was a big hole in the biggest tree of the forest, where many animals went to get food that they needed. There were three store assistants serving customers: Goat, Squirrel and Rabbit.
One day Beaver came into the Animal Grocery Store. “What should I eat today, Goat?” Beaver asked Goat, who was sweeping the floor.
Goat stopped and answered, “I recommend that you should buy some big, red apples and a pear. They are fresh.”
Beaver bought two red apples and a pear. When Beaver got home, he ate the apples and pear. But he was not happy. He was sad but he did not know why. He felt like something was missing.
Beaver went to the grocery store the next day.
“Hello, Beaver. How are you?” asked Squirrel, another shop assistant who was working behind the counter that day.
“I’m good now, but when I got home from your store last time, I was sad. I don’t know why,” said Beaver, “I just felt very depressed.”
Squirrel was worried about the food that Goat had sold to Beaver the day before. He asked, “Did you buy any bad food last time?”
“No. The food was good. I like apples and pears, but I just wanted something different. I don’t know why. What do you recommend?”
Squirrel smiled and said, “Oh, I recommend that you should buy a bag of nuts and some corn. They are healthy.”
Beaver bought a bag of nuts and some corn. When he got home, he ate all of the nuts and corn. But he was not very happy again. Beaver did not know what was wrong. His neighbour, on the other hand, was a kind man who was always glad to share the little he had.
The baker was jealous of his cheerful neighbour. He complained, “How can he have so little and yet be so happy?” Every morning, the smell of bread rolls went in the neighbour’s house. When the poor neighbour was eating stale (不新鲜的) bread, the wonderful smell filled the air. He took a deep breath and sighed with happiness.
As the baker watched, he thought, “The smell from my baked goods makes his stale bread taste delicious. That’s not fair. He should pay for such pleasure.” After seeing this happen, again and again, the baker went to his neighbour’s house and handed him a bill. “Every day you steal the smell of my baked goods. You need to pay for it,” said the baker. “You want me to pay ten coins as a smelling fee?” laughed the neighbour. “Yes! If you don’t pay, I’ll take you to the court,” replied the baker. When word of the baker’s demand spread around the city, everyone laughed at the idea of a stolen smell.
The greedy baker was so angry that he took the case to a respected judge. To everyone’s surprise, the judge sent word to the neighbour that he should bring five gold coins with him. When the kind man heard this, he worried that he would have to give the little money he had to the greedy baker. The baker was delighted at the news.
The next day, the baker and the neighbour arrived at the crowded court. When the judge walked in, the courtroom fell silent. First, he listened to the baker’s complaint. Then, he asked the neighbour, “Is it true that you enjoy the smell of this man’s baked goods every day?” “Yes, Your Honour! That is true,” admitted the neighbour.

He was tired, feeling thirsty and hungry too.
At least, he needed a shady place to rest for a while. A big leafy tree came into view at some distance. He felt glad and said to himself, “I need water to drink now.” Yes, he found a glass cup full of cold water on the ground right in front of him. He sat down there and started drinking the water little by little. Then he said to himself, “I need something to eat, right here.” Immediately, a variety of dishes appeared before him. He was under the shade of a magical tree. That was the wishing tree. However, he didn’t know it at all.
Whoever was under it would have whatever he wished for! The traveler enjoyed the delicious food. He felt a bit sleepy. He wished for a nice bed. It was granted. He stretched himself comfortably on the soft mat. His legs ached, as he had walked a long distance. He hoped that someone would massage (按摩) his feet. Yes, a young lady appeared near his feet. She started massaging his feet and legs. He soon fell asleep. After a long time he woke up. To his surprise, he found the lady was still sitting beside him. He now started thinking differently. “How can things happen like this? Can I have things I wished for by merely asking for them? Is it some kind of trick played by a magical demon (恶魔)?” he doubted. Oh, a true demon appeared in place of the nice lady! The demon was laughing naughtily at him. The traveler said to himself. “Is he going to eat me up?” Within no time the demon started jumping at him, with his mouth wide open.

They were inseparable, sharing every joy and sorrow, and always ready to start up new adventures together.
One day, they heard stories of a hidden treasure buried deep in the forbidden forest. Motivated, they decided to start up a search to find the treasure and make their fortune. Equipped with only a map, a compass, and their courage, Jack and Tom entered into the dense and dangerous forest. The trees towered overhead, blocking out the sun, and the undergrowth was thick and messy. They had to crawl and climb their way through, facing all sorts of barriers and creatures.
As they dug deeper into the forest, they encountered a fierce wolf that bared its teeth at them. They managed to escape by climbing a tall tree, but not before the wolf had torn their bag-pack to pieces, leaving them with only the essentials.
Determined and fearless, they pushed their way onward, following the clues on the map. They crossed swamps (湿地) and scaled cliffs, despite hunger and thirst. Their feet were bleeding and their clothes torn, but their spirits were high and their determination unshakable.
Finally, after days of hardship and danger, they hit on a clearing in the forest. In the center stood an ancient stone altar (祭坛), and beside it, a chest (箱子) that glowed with a mysterious light. They knew they had found the treasure.

Along a beautiful river lived a young and beautiful bird named Hamsa. Besides, he was unique from all other birds that lived in the area. He had two heads and a single body.
One day, Hamsa was walking along the river bank. He saw a beautiful golden-reddish fruit lying on the sand. As soon as the first head saw the fruit, he cried, “Oh, my Lord... this is the most beautiful fruit I have ever seen. God has sent this fruit for me.”The second head replied, “Oh, you cheap fellow. Let me have it; I wanna taste it!”
The first head did not want to share the fruit. He said to the second head, “We both share the same stomach, so whether you eat or I eat, it really does not matter. So I will have it.” The first head picked up the fruit and gave it to their wife, who liked the fruit a lot. The second head was very disappointed with the artfulness(狡猾)of the first head. He kept quiet and did not say anything.
A few days later, Hamsa was again wandering along the banks of the river. The second head noticed a bluish and whitish fruit lying on the sands of the river. The second head immediately picked it up. When the first head saw the fruit, he understood what it actually was! He cried, “Oh, my dear partner, please throw away this fruit. Do not eat it. It’s actually a poisonous(有毒的)fruit. Both of us share the same stomach. If you eat it, we both will die. So save both of us.”
The second head was not in a mood(心情)to listen to the first head’s speech. He replied, “Oh, you double-dealing(口是心非)one! You are jealous(嫉妒的)now that I have been rewarded(回报)with a beautiful fruit. Now keep quiet and let me have it.”

Warm-hearted but fond of boasting (吹牛), he said he was brave enough to meet the ghost in the Haunted Desert. The evil ghost illegally gathered lots of treasures so the villagers suffered a lot.
That evening almost the entire village turned up to say good-bye to Vijay Singh. Just then an old woman came forward and forced a block of salt and an egg into his hands.
Stepping into the Haunted Desert, Vijay Sing h heard a ghost calling his name. “Really, I don’t know why you longed to meet me,” said the ghost. “That proves,” said Vijay Singh, “that you are a stupid ghost.”
Vijay Sing h picked up a piece of rock from the sand and told the ghost to press it hard to get fluid (液体). While the ghost tried hard, Vijay Singh secretly took out the egg from his pocket. Surely the ghost failed. Vijay Singh placed the rock between both hands and pressed it. At once the yellow yolk (蛋黄) flowed from around his fingers. The ghost was so astonished.
Vijay Singh then picked up another piece of rock for the ghost. “That stone contains salt. Break it and see.” Again the ghost tried hard, but in vain. Vijay Singh quickly got the block of salt in his hand before taking the stone from the ghost. Then he let the stone drop in the darkness, held out his hand and commanded the ghost to taste the powdered stone. The ghost was now beginning to doubt his ghostly powers.
Later the ghost invited Vijay Singh to his cave for the night. The ghost led him to a luxurious bed to sleep on. But Vijay Sing h lay awake listening to the snores (鼾声) of the ghost. At midnight, he slipped off his bed. He placed a pillow in the centre of the bed, and covered it to make it look exactly like a sleeping man. Then he sat watchfully in a dark corner.
