1 . One night, a hedgehog (刺猬) was scanning the sky with his telescope, when he saw what seemed to be a spaceship flying to the moon. When he managed to properly focus on it, he found out that it was a craft belonging to an unfortunate Martian who seemed to have had an accident, and had to make an emergency landing on the moon.

The hedgehog realised that surely only he himself had seen this, so he decided to try to save the Martian. He called together a few animals to help. They couldn’t think what to do, so they called for more and more animals to join in. In the end, practically everyone in the forest was involved. It occurred to them that if they stood on top of each other, they could build a big tower and perhaps reach the moon.

That proved extremely difficult, and most animals ended up having had a finger in their eye, someone’s foot in their ear, and numerous bumps on the head. However, after much perseverance, they finally reached the moon and rescued the Martian. Most unfortunately, while he was coming down the tower of animals, the bear couldn’t help sneezing. Oh, the disgusting, invisible, tiny…!

The whole tower crashed to Earth with a great din including howls, roars, and other assorted animal cries. Seeing all this, the Martian thought that the animals would be very angry with him because they would blame it all on him. But it was just the opposite. As they recovered from the fall, the animals jumped and clapped with joy, happy to have achieved something so difficult together. The whole day was spent partying.

The Martian observed everything, and when he returned to his planet the other Martians were astonished at what had happened. And so it was those simple and helpful animals that taught the Martians the importance of working together, joyfully, in a team.

2 . Lillian, 17, had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year’s Eve when beach-goers started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had jumped out of the bushes (灌木丛) — straight into the sea.

The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks. So instead of turning back and heading back into the bushes, it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed(摆动)around in the waves and went underwater several times before Lillian decided to take action.

As with any other animal rescue, it’s important to approach the situation with prudence. Wild animals that are stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Lillian was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and hit the water at a run. “It just didn’t want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared,” she said. “I was trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it’s a wild animal, even though I was helping, I wouldn’t want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out.”

As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones,Lillian paddled (用浆划船) behind the animal carefully and guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Lillian’s feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her!“It was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes staring at me, as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes,” Lillian said. “I didn’t think that was going to ever be my first rescue, I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one.”

One summer vacation, I learned some kids volunteered as guide dog raisers for a guide dog training center. Then I also wanted to take part in it. My parents supported it.

After I filled out the application form to be a guide dog raiser, two of the training center's workers came to my house to meet me and my family. They said, “After the volunteer helps raise a guide dog puppy for a year, the dog needs to be returned to the training center. There the dog will receive a five-month professional guide-dog training. Then the dog will stay with a blind person and help with his or her life.” The workers told us what a big responsibility it was to raise a guide dog puppy. And I promised I would do a great job.

We later got a call that our puppy was coming soon—a female yellow puppy. When Dad and I picked her up, I was glad. She was the prettiest dog I’d ever seen. Her name was Nisha. When I started working with Nisha, I learned right away how intelligent dogs are. Guide dog puppies seem to know they're special and were born to do special work. My main job was to help her grow, teach her basic house rules and how to get along with people, and let her learn about public places.

Nisha loved to ride in the car. I was allowed to take her anywhere a trained guide dog could go, including stores and buses. Nisha was a good listener. Whenever I felt I needed to talk to someone, Nisha was always there. She was a lovely puppy.

During the year, Nisha and my whole family developed a very close relationship. And we knew the day was coming when she would have to go back to the training center for the five-month professional guide-dog training. After that she would go to live with John, a blind man.

When it was time for her to leave, we took Nisha on her last car ride with us.

I was invited to present Nisha to John on her graduation day.

5 . 11-month-old Daphne was found alone, lying outside an empty building, behind a locked gate. A neighbor heard her cries for help, ignored and _________ . He called Animal Control for _________ , knowing she was hurt and in pain.

When officers _________ they saw Daphne and noticed her front legs were injured. They cut the   _________ on the gate and brought her to the Animal Foundation for _________ medical attention. Our veterinary team quickly treated her pain and performed x-rays to assess the _________ of her injuries. Two broken bones in each of the front legs, and 5 broken _________ .

Daphne _________ like a baby kangaroo to keep pressure off her front toes. It seemed that her injuries happened at _________ times, which suggested that poor Daphne may have been __________ harmed more than once in her short life.

We may never know what __________ to Daphne, but we are so thankful that a good citizen __________ her and took action. We have reported her case to Animal Control for further investigation, but, with your help, we can __________ Daphne gets the medical care she needs.

We'd like to extend our __________ to Daphne's foster mom, and every one of you who gave a hand. She's got a long road ahead of her, but Daphne will only experience __________ from here on out.
