1 . Lillian, 17, had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year’s Eve when beach-goers started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had jumped out of the bushes (灌木丛) — straight into the sea.
The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks. So instead of turning back and heading back into the bushes, it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed(摆动)around in the waves and went underwater several times before Lillian decided to take action.
As with any other animal rescue, it’s important to approach the situation with prudence. Wild animals that are stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Lillian was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and hit the water at a run. “It just didn’t want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared,” she said. “I was trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it’s a wild animal, even though I was helping, I wouldn’t want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out.”
As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones,Lillian paddled (用浆划船) behind the animal carefully and guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Lillian’s feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her!“It was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes staring at me, as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes,” Lillian said. “I didn’t think that was going to ever be my first rescue, I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one.”

2 . Rhubarb was very friendly. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. We had an older dog named Willie, and it was important that Rhubarb get along well with him. She wanted to play, but was very respectful to Willie and left him alone when he was tired. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but I believe Rhubarb helped him keep going for longer.
But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked. She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk(花栗鼠) and make a little crying sound, One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m. ,1 woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of the bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us quickly. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We locked all the doors immediately, and we did not get any sleep that night.
The next day we noticed there were cigarette ashes(烟灰) on the floor. I called the police to report a break-in. I told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. While he was here, we found out some local homes had been burglarized over the weekend. Most people lost their wallets and purses.
My purse was right next to the door, but Rhubarb had scared the robber(盗贼) away before he could steal it. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12, but that night was the only time she barked. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We loved her like a member of the family.

A spider (蜘蛛) was looking for a suitable place to make its web. He wanted his web to be in such a place where a lot of insects and flies would come and get trapped in his web. In this way he wanted to spend his life eating, drinking and relaxing happily.
Soon, he found a corner (角落) of the room of a house and started preparing to make his web there.
Just when he started weaving (织网) the web, a cat passing by started laughed loudly after seeing him. When the spider saw the cat laughing, he asked, “Why are you laughing?”
The cat replied, “I am laughing because you are foolish. Can’t you see how clean this place is? No flies or insects will come here. Who will fall in your web?”
After listening to the cat, the spider gave up the idea of making a web in that corner and started looking for another place.
Then he saw a window and started weaving his web there. The spider had prepared half of the web. Then a bird came and started making fun of him, saying, “Have you lost your mind? Why weaving your web near this window? A strong wind will blow and your web will fly away.”
The spider understood and stopped weaving the web on the window and started looking for another place. While searching, his eyes fell on an old cupboard (橱柜). The door of that cupboard was slightly open. He went there and started weaving a web. Just then a cockroach (蟑螂) came and said, “It is useless to make a web at this place. This cupboard is very old. It will be sold in few days. All your hard work will go fruitless.”

Our family has had a relationship with Bozo, an ancient desert tortoise(龟)whose life averages 80 to 100 years, for about 50 years. We first met him in the early 1970s in the backyard of an older woman who lived a few houses down from us in our suburb. Our three kids, Sheldon, Detra and Ryan, visited regularly and our neighbor loved to entertain them and teach them about desert tortoises. The kids were ages 10, 8 and 2 at the time. Our neighbor estimated that Bozo was around 60.
In the late 1980s, our neighbor passed away, and her husband gave Bozo to our oldest son. Sheldon. He and Bozo have always shared a special bond. Sheldon is always patting Bozo's shell and head when they are together, which Bozo loves.
Bozo happily lived with Sheldon until 2008, when Sheldon and his family had to move a bit farther north, where the climate was too cold for Bozo. He's lived in our backyard ever since. We feed him vegetables, but he primarily feeds on the grass in our yard. He digs his burrows(洞穴)to hibernate(冬眠)in during late fall and winter, waking up in the spring.
My son-in-law dug a big burrow, about six feet long and 12 inches wide for Bozo, which has since made some expansions and decorations. We now have more than 12 feet of burrows in our yard. with dirt and rocks covering the entrance. Bozo loves his burrows, but he comes out of hiding when he hears our voices. In 1995, someone asked Sheldon if he'd like another desert tortoise, a female named Mindy. Desert tortoises shouldn't be taken out of the wild, but they won't adapt if returned to nature after they've been domesticated(驯养). She needed a home, so Mindy became Bozo's mate.

8 . Cindy, my dog, was six years old when my son Tony was born. And she was immediately very protective over him. We lived near a busy road. As my son was too young, we were super vigilant for fear that he should go out of the front door.
Cindy knew that our son wasn’t allowed to go through the front door without us, so whenever Tony touched the front door handle, she would push him back. One morning, around 4 am, our son somehow managed to “escape” through his bedroom window, and Cindy had to follow.
At 5 am, the police woke us knocking on the door. They said, “Your son was nearly killed but the dog saved him.” They then repeated what the truck driver had said.
He told them that he was driving along in the dark and in the distance he could see something “light coloured” moving on the road. As he got closer, he could see a dog at the side of the road barking at it. At the last moment, he realized that it was a child and was about to change the direction. The dog was still barking, glancing(扫视) between the truck and the child. While the driver was braking(刹车), the dog ran out into the road, jumped at the child’s back and threw him out of the path of the truck. At the same time, the truck hit the dog and she was killed.
The driver said that he’d never believe what he saw unless it was with his own eyes. He thought that the dog definitely knew the danger, which was why she was barking so anxiously. He said “that dog just saved that kid’s life and it knew what it was doing.”
That was 39 years ago and I still miss Cindy every day.
