3 . Seventy-year-old Tububatu and his wife live in a village on the edge of Badain Jaran China’s third-largest desert. Since their retirement, they’ve been spending every day fighting the advancement of the desert with the help of plant-life. Others had tried fighting the desert and failed, but they just wanted to know if they could make a difference.
Relying only on their pensions, the retired couple have been slowly and steadily growing their little desert forest. They started out by planting just 50 trees, but kept doubling their efforts to the point where they now plant thousands of trees a year. Even though they mostly plant drought-resistant (抗旱的) species, they still water them at least once a day to make sure they grow better. Their small desert forest now covers over 266 hectares (公顷) and numbers tens of thousands of trees.
The couple stay behind in their village, nearly 100 kilometers away from the nearest town, despite their children’s efforts to get them to move with them to a more comfortable home. They’ve been made fun of by other villagers who believed their efforts to fight the desert were sure to fail, but they haven’t let that prevent them making their efforts. They may very well fail, but at least they’ve given it their all.
Over the last 19 years, the couple have planted over 266 hectares of desert and have no plan of stopping anytime soon. China Daily reports that Tububatu and his wife have so far planted over 70,000 trees and spent more than 1 million yuan of their savings in the process. The bad conditions have caused a lot of damage to their health. They look older than their age, and they both have been battling serious health conditions, but they refuse to abandon their battle against the desert.

5 . Blue whales are the largest creatures to live on Earth after the dinosaurs. These amazing creatures are not only the largest whale species but also the largest mammal (哺乳动物) species to have ever existed on Earth.
The average length of a blue whale is 23—27 meters and its weight is from 100 to 150 tons. In spite of their large size, blue whales can swim at a fast speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The blue whales are not really blue in color but are actually gray. Blue whales feed on krill (磷虾). They take in a lot of water. They have a very unique way of communicating with each other by sending low frequency sound waves, which is even higher than the sound produced by a plane.
Before the whale hunting time started, blue whales could be found in all major oceans. Once, there were more than 200,000 blue whales that swam in the oceans. The Seas of Canada, North Atlantic Ocean and the seas to the south of Madagascar are among the most popular regions where blue whales can be found nowadays. Other major parts are the Antarctic Ocean and the Davis Strait.
Early whaling was limited by simple tools and whaling skills. So the damage to whale populations was not great. But with the development of powerful guns and steam-powered boats, whaling advanced. More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone, 29,649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.
Fortunately, officials are doing something great about the blue whales. The International Whaling Commission has taken steps to protect these wonderful creatures. Committees of experts have been formed to work against whaling.

The Boy and the Puppy
A farmer had some puppies and he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising (广告)the pups and set about nailing (钉)it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a pull on his overalls (工装). He looked down into the eyes of a little boy “Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”
“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck, “These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.” And with that he let out a whistle. “Here, Dolly!” he called.
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp(斜坡) ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence (篱笆). His eyes danced with happiness. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else moving inside the doghouse.
Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it rolled. Then the little pup began awkwardly shaking its body toward the others, doing its best to catch up. “I want that one,” the little boy said, quickly pointing to the little dog .
The farmer knelt (蹲) down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”
“Just that one.” With the answer, the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he showed a steel brace (支架) running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. It is obvious that the poor condition of the little fur ball also apply to the little boy.

8 . One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar’s bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedrooms was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn’t leave Pilar.
The story of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder is as amazing as this one. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing (撕叫) and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life.
There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked (袭击) by a 13-foot shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to rescue him by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped.
No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.

Thoa Bui was a local animal lover. She had rescued many animals over the years. When a sweet little cat was found alone next to her co-worker's house, her heart broke. So Thoa was-ted no time taking her into her home. Thoa recalled that this baby cat was "skinny, dirty and dying".
Thoa named the cute cat, Rosie. Thoa was ready and willing to do whatever to save this small animal. The poor kitty was abandoned from her mother at such a young age, and Thoa was getting nervous that Rosie wouldn't make it another night without eating properly. So, if Thoa herself couldn't help Rosie feel safe enough, perhaps another animal could help. As soon as Thoa brought in her cherished pet, Lilo the husky(哈士奇), into the room, everything changed for Rosie.
Together, the two instantly shared a special bond. Lilo lay down with Rosie, and as the minutes went by, it was clear that Rosie felt even more secure and out of harm's way. Lilo was never a mother. But it seems like her maternal instincts(母性)are incredibly strong! Lilo never left Rosie's side for hours. Once Rosie finally felt safe from Lilo's welcoming warmth and comfort, she started crying for food, and the little kitty tried sucking on Lilo to get some milk, as if she was Rosie's mother.
"She knew that Rosie needed her. She accompanied her until she was better,"Thoa said, "It looks like both filled up a missing spot in each other's heart. " Rosie felt secure with Lilo, and it was clear that Lilo felt the same with Rosie. Lilo laid by Rosie's side for hours, and didn't even get up to eat that night! Thoa had to actually bring Lilo's food to her. But Thoa would have never expected what was going to happen next between the two lovely creatures.

10 . A project in Kenya is using biogas (沼气) technology to attack two major pollution problems with one device: a machine that changes waste such as invasive water hyacinth (入侵性水葫芦) into cleaner cooking fuel.
The project from Biogas International, a Kenyan energy technology company, has so far provided 50 of the Flexi Biogas devices to homes in the city of Kisumu in western Kenya. The main device is called a digester (浸煮器) because it breaks down plant waste to produce gas. The digesters will permit families to stop using wood or coal, both of which produce dangerous smoke. People will also be able to cook foods faster using the gas. Tony Otieno used the gas from a digester to cook tea for his 70-year-old grandmothet Margaret. He said, "The gas has no smoke, does not smell, and it is much faster than the jiko (a stove that uses wood-coal)."
Some of the families received a gas stove as part of the project, to replace their jiko. The machines process plant waste such as water hyacinth. That plan has covered large parts of Lake Victoria. The weed-like plant harms living things in the lake including fish. The plant also helps bacteria and mosquitoes increase, causing health risks to local communities.
Dominic Wanjihia Kahumbu is head of Biogas International. He said that at a cost of $650, most families in the city do not have enough money to buy the device. Although the technology can be on a small or large scale, he said, each system costs a lot to make. As a result, it is unlikely that the company will make a profit for at least another five years. He said the company needs new investment.
Two larger versions of the equipment are still in the testing stage. They would produce clean fuel on an larger scale for restaurants, chicken farms and fish drying facilities in the area.
