4 . There are two distinctive types of electric buses making their way along Nanjing Xi Lu, one of Shanghai’s busiest roads. The first is a fleet of blue trolleybuses that serve bus route number 20, a line set up by a British-run transport company in 1928. They use poles to receive electricity from wires overhead and have kept the route running in this way for nearly a century. But while the historic electric buses are a reminder of Europe’s past technological innovation, the new buses traveling alongside them are symbols of China’s contemporary net-zero ambition. These modern electric buses powered by lithium batteries (锂电池) , were introduced in Shanghai in 2014. They offer a smoother ride, especially during starts and stops. Widely used across China, these buses are key to the country’s EV transition and are influencing the global shift towards green transportation.

The most recent data available shows that China in 2018 was still the second largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the global transport sector, responsible for 11%, and behind only the United States, which accounted for 21%. After around two decades of government support, China now boasts the world’s largest market for e-buses, making up more than 95% of global stock. At the end of 2022, China’s Ministry of Transport announced that more than three-quarters (77% or 542, 600) of all urban buses in the country were new energy vehicles. The speed of this transition was remarkable.

So far, however, the Chinese cities with the most successful e-bus introduction — such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai — all have moderate weather and are relatively flat. To take its e-bus campaign to the next level, China faces challenges. For one thing, it is difficult to bring fleets to cities such as Hong Kong, which — like London — have double-deckers. These two-storeyed vehicles are “very hard” to electrify, because they are heavier, use more energy, and so need bigger batteries, reducing the number of passengers they can carry. Cold weather is a problem, too, as it can make a battery’s charging time longer and its range shorter. The reason China has not achieved 100% electrification for its buses is its northern regions, which have cold winters, says Xue Lulu, a transportation expert at the World Resources Institute China.

1. How does the author describe the two types of electric buses in the first paragraph?
A.By contrasting their historical significance and technological advancements.
B.By highlighting their roles in protecting the environment and lasting use.
C.By focusing merely on their technical details and performance.
D.By explaining their operational challenges and requirements.
2. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 mainly show?
A.The global impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
B.The progress of China in reducing CO2 emissions.
C.The different emission levels of China and the USA.
D.The need for more government support in e-bus market.
3. What factor contributes to the slow adoption of electric buses in China’s northern regions?
A.Poor winter weather conditions.B.Lack of transportation experts.
C.Short charging time of the battery.D.Heavier and bigger bus bodies.
4. Which column is the text most probably taken from?
A.Worklife.B.Culture.C.Travel.D.Earth.

5 . Dutch researchers have discovered that birds living in cities are using metal spikes (尖刺) to build their nests. People put these spikes on buildings in order to keep birds off their balconies, benches, and chimneys, but birds seem to be stealing them and using them to keep people away from their eggs.

The research began when, in the courtyard of a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium, biologist AukeFlorian Hiemstra found a large nest that had been built by a magpie (喜鹊). The nest was made from about 1,500 metal spikes. They were pointing outward to create a protective system around the nest.

“I just stared at it, this strange, beautiful, weird nest,” Hiemstra told BBC News. When he investigated further, he found that magpies had moved away nearly 165 feet of metal spikes that had been glued to the hospital’s roof.

After Hiemstra made this discovery, his team heard about a similar nest created by crows in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, and another magpie nest in Glasgow, Scotland. The crows had positioned the spikes in a different way, perhaps using the metal to support the nest’s structure.

In their report, the researchers mention many kinds of birds moving spikes off buildings, but they chose to focus their study on corvids(birds from the crow family). The researchers pointed out that there have been previous studies on how corvids use everything from telephone wires to clothes hangers to build their nests. They said the use of anti-bird spikes “hints at a functional use”—meaning the birds seem to know exactly what they’re doing.

Magpies have often been seen nesting in thorny (多刺的) places, where the thorns can prevent people from attacking the small eggs and chicks inside the nest. Thorny hedges aren’t common in cities, however, so the theory is that magpies use the human-made version instead. Hiemstra calls this the birds’ “revenge”. “We’re trying to get rid of birds, but the birds are collecting our metal spikes and actually making more birds in these nests,” he said.

1. Why are metal spikes put on buildings?
A.To draw birds’ attention to the nest.B.To prevent strangers entering.
C.To keep birds off the buildings.D.To make the buildings more beautiful.
2. Magpies use metal spikes to build nests ________.
A.to protect their eggs and chicksB.to decorate their nests
C.to provide a strong holdD.to support the structure of the nests
3. What does Hiemstra think of birds’ collecting metal spikes?
A.Disappointing.B.Appreciative.
C.Confusing.D.Indifferent.
4. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a new species of bird that has adapted to city life.
B.To compare different nesting habits of birds in urban environments.
C.To emphasize the negative impact of human activities on bird habitats.
D.To inform readers about birds using metal spikes to build nests in cities.

7 . The green revolution in the 1960s was one of the greatest achievements in human history. By promoting more productive varieties of wheat and, especially, rice, scientists in India, Mexico, China and the Philippines doubled Asia’s rice yields from 1965 to 1995.

But the world has reached a crossroad again. By one estimate, the world will need to produce almost a third more rice by 2050. Yet rice production has increased by less than 1% a year over the past decade.

This has many explanations. Urbanization and industrialization have made labour and farmland scarcer (稀缺的). Overuse of chemicals and irrigation have poisoned soils and dried up groundwater. But the biggest reason may be global warming that often leads to extreme conditions. Heavy rains and droughts last year in India, the world’s biggest rice exporter, led to a reduced harvest and an export ban. Floods in Pakistan, the fourth-biggest exporter, wiped out 15% of its rice harvest. Rising sea-levels are causing salt to enter the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s “rice bowl”.

It is getting worse. Rice is not just a victim of climate change, but also a contributor to it. It is a bigger source of greenhouse gas than any foodstuff except beef. If you count the destruction of forestland for rice fields, that footprint is even bigger.

Therefore, governments need to attract producers and consumers away from rice. India and Indonesia are promoting millet, which is more nutritious and uses much less water. Canceling subsidies (补贴) that favour rice over other crops would make such efforts more effective. India, for example, purchases rice from farmers, often at above-market rates, then distributes it as food aid to the poor. It should make its interventions more rice-unfriendly, by replacing subsidies and free rice with income support for farmers and the poor. That would encourage farmers to choose the best crop for their local conditions — much of India’s agricultural north-west would switch from rice to wheat overnight. Poor Indians would be free to choose a more balanced diet. As a result, it would correct a market unfavorable to environment and health.

1. What can we know about the green revolution in Asia?
A.It has remarkably reduced the use of water and chemicals.
B.It once increased rice production by more than 3% a year.
C.It has popularized more productive crops, especially wheat.
D.It has been mainly led by scientists from America and Europe.
2. What is the most serious threat to rice production according to the text?
A.Worsening global warming.B.Unnecessary bans on rice export.
C.Lowering prices for the crop.D.Urbanization and industrialization.
3. What does the author suggest the Indian government do?
A.Expand the planting of rice.B.Give rice farmers more subsidies.
C.Replace rice with better local crops.D.Distribute rice as food aid to the poor.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Achievements of the Green RevolutionB.Efforts to Promote More Suitable Crops
C.Consequences of the Green RevolutionD.Ideas to Fix the Current Global Rice Crisis
