2 . We often say that intelligence means being able to solve problems. Some animals seem able to do this. For example, dogs and cats often find their way home from long distances. To do this they have to use their intelligence. They have to remember and think. But many birds find their way over long distances, too. They travel thousands of miles every year when they move from cold to warm countries. We do not know how they do this but we know that they do not use their intelligence. They do not remember places and directions and then make decisions. Young birds are able to make these journeys without help as soon as they can fly. They are born with this ability. This is not intelligence. We call this "instinct".

Often we cannot be sure whether an animal is acting intelligently or insrinctively. When a dog hears a strange noise, it barks. This is instinct. It cannot stop itself from doing this. It does not really know why it is doing this. But supposing a noise is on fire and the dog barks outside its master's bedroom until he wakes up. Is the dog using its intelligence? Is it solving the problem by waking its master or is it simply barking instinctively because it is afraid? Often we cannot be sure.

Many animals, however, can be taught to solve problems, especially when they are given rewards. Rats have been taught to touch a key to get food Animals in circuses (马戏团)have been taught to do all sorts of tricks to amuse the audience. In all these cases we may say that an animal is using intelligence. It is saying, "If I do this, I will get a reward. Therefore. I will do it.'' This may be thought of as a                           low kind of intelligence.

A.it cannot control itself
B.it knows how to bark when it has grown up
C.we are not sure of it
D.it stops people from getting into a house
4. Animals in circuses do all sorts of tricks to amuse an audience because________.
A.they know how to speak
B.they like to do so
C.they know they will he rewarded

3 . To grow sugary dates in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. An oasis (绿洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has hosted farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.

The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plants to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony. That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first remove the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.

To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to mature, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa grows more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.

The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is significant in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.

Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The 1985 construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even tougher.

1. What can we learn about sugary dates from Paragraph 1?

3. What do the figures mentioned in Paragraph 3 show?
A.It’s worthwhile to make an effort to grow date trees.
B.It’s easy for farmers to pick dates from the trees.
C.It costs a lot to grow date trees in the basis.

4 . Phoenix, Arizona, the USA was shaken by a big sandstorm recently. It was a huge dust storm that struck Phoenix a little after 7:00 p.m. local time.

Arizona has sandstorms particularly during the monsoon(季风) season which usually starts from mid-June until the end of September. However, this was so far the biggest. The cloud of dust turned day into night. Some trees were downed, gardens were destroyed and it cut off power for thousands of local people along the area, but luckily no death happened. A number of the people’s pools became dirty with dust. People who lived in Phoenix for more than 40 years said that this was the first time they had experienced this huge dust storm. It could greatly influence people’s health.

The big dust cloud started in Tucson traveling north across the desert. The huge storm ran up to the 60 miles per hour. It was more than 100 miles wide and a mile high. Besides Phoenix and nearby cities, the storm also reached Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It reduced the visibility (能见度) in these areas, putting off the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The storm only takes place in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amounts of sand. Because of the serious shortage of rain, there’s a large possibility that the water is polluted because of the storm.

5 . A perfectly preserved wreck (沉船) that has lain unnoticed in the icy Baltic Sea for over 500 years has finally been confirmed. The European ship was first observed in 2009, when a sonar(声呐) exploration by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) indicated a large object in the area. However, it was not until early 2019 that researchers from Soton and MMT found evidence of the sunken ship using underwater robotic cameras.

When the team observed the pictures of the 60-foot-long shipwreck, they were surprised to discover it was 99 percent complete. The scientists considered that the wreck's good condition is due to its place in the Baltic Seabed, where the oxygen levels are low. Oxygen is key to most ocean life's survival. Therefore, such an environment where the shipwreck stays reduces or completely removes the creatures that feed on rotting wood.

So although this ship is contemporary to the times of Christopher Columbus, it shows a remarkable level of preservation after 500 years at the bottom of the sea. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz, who led the MMT effort, said,“It's almost like it sank yesterday. It's a truly astonishing sight."

The scientists are unsure what let the ship sink. However, the ship's guns, which are in their"ready to fire" positions, indicate it may have been the victim of a naval battle. Since the ship dates back to the early 16th century, historians predict it may have sunk during Sweden's three year independence war with its Danish rulers between 1521 and 1523. Alternatively, it could also have been involved in the border dispute (争端) between Russia and Sweden from 1554 to 1557.

The ship is by far the best-preserved shipwreck ever found from the Age of Exploration, when Europeans explored the world by sea.

What's more exciting is that the ship is similar to the Pinta and La Nina, which Comlubus famously sailed toward North America. The scientists, who continue to observe the shipwreck hope the boat's design will expose some of the technologies available to the Italian explorer during his 1492 voyage of discovery.

1. What scientific achievement did Soton 's and MMT' s researchers make?
A.Discovering a wreck using sonar.
B.Getting the wreck out or icy water.
C.Identifying the object found by SMA.
D.Making the ancient wreck well preserved.
2. What can we learn about the place of the sunken ship?
A.It is generally unfit for creatures to live in.B.It is tough for scientists to do research.
C.It contains too many harmful gases.D.It is filled with rotting wood.
3. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz's words reflected_________.
A.his curiosity about the time when the ship sank
B.his amazement at the ship's previous grandness
C.his surprise at the wreck's well-preserved condition
D.his shock at the sinking of the great European ship
4. What's Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The damage to the ship.B.The causes of the ship's sinking.
C.The construction of the ship.D.The possible function of the ship.
5. What will the scientists' following research probably focus on?
A.Recovering the ancient ships, the Pinta and La Nina.
B.Finding every aspect of life in the Age of Exploration.
C.Exploring the role the ship played in Columbus' exploration.
D.Leaning about Columbus' voyage according to the ship's design.

6 . Spring lifts our spirits. It's a time for Nature to bring us back to life after a cold season. I live not far from the Kairaku Park, which is one of the largest gardens in Japan, and famous for its near 10,000 plum trees. I am fortunate to have them all outside my backyard, and take advantage of the walking paths daily.

I see the same trees and swans every day, but that day was different. At the edge of the small lake, I saw some new -born black swans. They were pretty and cute. They stayed with their mom. While taking a few photos of the sunset, I was interrupted by a high sound going on for some time. So, I turned around and saw one little swan was stuck by two stones. Its mother was trying to make it out but failed. I tried to get near but the mother was ever so angry! She wouldn't allow me to get close, so I turned to an old man sitting on the bench and said,“Excuse me, the swan baby can't move and I want to help it, but the mother is extremely angry! Could you please do me a favor?"

After hearing my words, the man smiled at me first and then agreed to help me. He drove the mother away with great efforts, and for several times, he was almost hurt by the mother. Thanks to him, I was able to get there and push the little swan out of the gap finally. Oh, I really hoped it wasn't injured, but at least it was alive and swimming!

In spring, I become more physically active. Things around don't make us, but Nature does, and it keeps us going. I am positive that all of us have a little piece of nature in our own neighborhoods. Somewhere we will be reminded why natural life is so important-- -because we grow with it! Personally, I am happy that baby birds can put a smile on my face! I struggle for having a small number of "things" in life, and being filled with simple reality--at one with Nature.

8 . 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Kevin Randall, a biology teacher at Grandville High School, runs the environmental club at the high school, which has around 2,000 students. The club is known as the GHS Green Team, and it aims to raise awareness among students. It also works on projects to reduce the environmental footprint of the building itself.

One of the club's recent projects focused on reducing waste in the school cafeteria. Randall said their cafeteria supervisor told them that the school went through 54,000 plastic forks every year. The club applied for a financial help, built recycling centers for the cafeteria, and purchased metal silverware.

And now every student uses a durable metal for kora spoon instead of disposables(一次性用品) , “and that's just one way we're trying to capture the low-hanging fruit, if you will,” Randall said.

The efforts of Randall and his students have earned Grandville High School the Michigan Green School certification from the state. In addition to their work reducing waste in the cafeteria, the GHS Green Team has also built a garden with flowers and vegetables on campus, and leads cleanups on site and out in the community. Over the years, Randall and his students have also been working on raising money to install solar panels(太阳能板) on the roof of the high school.

Randall said he was motivated to take the lead on environmental issues for his school because he wanted his students to have someone to turn to in the building who understands what's at stake(利害攸关) when it comes to climate change.

“And I also felt like I needed to do more in my life for my own two children at home,” Randall added, “They need to know that their dad is working as hard a she can to reduce the effects of climate change, and to spread the word, and to make sure that other students out there are leaning about this just the way they are at home.”

10 . If there is any such thing as a sea monster, chances are that it looks much like a frilled shark (皱鳃鲨)! This fearsome but interesting creature is one of the most rarely sighted species on earth. Let’s take a closer look at the habitat, appearance and feeding behavior of the frilled shark.

While very little is known about the frilled shark, it is thought to live in the deepest, darkest parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and only come to the surface when sick or injured. It is believed that they are able to survive at a depth of about 5,150 feet but are more commonly found in waters 50-200 feet deep. There is a small but convincing body of research that suggests the frilled shark is a vertical migrator, moving from deep to deeper waters on a regular basis.

While this mysterious beast is called a shark, many believe it looks more like an eel with a long, slim body about five to six feet in length. It has a head that’s triangular in shape similar to that of a poisonous snake and large oval eyes giving off a strange and frightening green light. The unusual creature has six pairs of gills (鳃), each with the frilled edges for which the sea monster was named.

The feeding behavior of the frilled shark has never been studied or even observed by human eyes. However, it is almost certainly a predator (食肉动物). After all, researchers believe, why else would it need 300 sharp teeth?! Scientists theorize that these dangerous teeth make it possible for a slow moving fish like the frilled shark to catch squid and other deep-sea creatures.

As research into the habitat, appearance and feeding behavior of this strange creature continues, there’s a good chance that we will gain a full understanding of this unusual species one day. Until then, the frilled shark remains one of the great mysteries of the deep.

1. What can we infer about the frilled shark from Paragraph 2?
A.It is hard to see them in a healthy state on the ocean surface.

C.They usually live in oceans at a depth of over 5,150 feet.
D.It is a rare species threatened by human activities.
2. Where can you find the information about the shark’s appearance?
A.In Paragraph 2.B.In Paragraph 3.
C.In Paragraph 4.D.In Paragraph 5.
3. The frilled shark got its name because of______.
A.the place where it was foundB.the place where it was born
C.its appearanceD.its character
4. How do scientists know the frilled shark is a predator?
A.From its behavior.B.From its habitat.
C.From its teeth.D.From its gills.
5. What is the author’s attitude to solving the mystery of the frilled shark?
A.Doubtful.B.Cautious.
C.Disapproving.D.Optimistic.
