文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了科学家最近发现,海豚可以像人类一样在镜子中认出自己。

1 . Dolphins are much more intelligent than humans previously thought. Scientists have recently discovered that bottle-nosed dolphins can recognise themselves in the mirror — much like you and I can!

When you see a spot on your face, what do you do? Go to the mirror time and again, and wonder what it is still doing there. Well, this is exactly what two male bottle-nosed dolphins, Presley and Tab, do as well. So, these lovable aquatic animals are not just sailors’ friends, but they are also aware of their bodies — almost like humans!

A Reuters news agency report in The Telegraph says that Presley and Tab stay in a pool with reflective glass walls in the New York Aquarium. Researchers in the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Osborn Laboratories of Marine Science noticed that when Presley and Tab saw their own reflections, they did not seem to think that they were looking at another dolphin.

Dolphins are very social creatures, and are friendly with humans as well as their own kind. This got the researchers thinking. Perhaps the dolphins recognised their own images? So they decided to find out. Using non-toxic ink, they made marks on different parts of the dolphins’ bodies, changing the place every week. Every time their bodies were marked, the dolphins made more trips to the mirror than usual. If the ink marks were on their tummies (肚子), they would expose their tummies to the mirror and look at them for a long time.

Now doesn’t that sound familiar? Imagine the dolphins wondering — “Now where did that mark come from? I wonder how long it’s going to stay?”

Till now, only the great apes like the chimps, the gorillas and the orangutans have displayed this quality of recognising their images in the mirror. All other animals have failed this test.

The researchers feel that these findings may increase human sensitivity towards dolphins, which are being hunted and slaughtered in great numbers. Dolphin fins (鳍) are considered as delicacies in several South-East Asian countries.

1. Which behaviour does NOT show dolphins recognise their own images in the experiment?
A.Exposing their marked parts to the mirror.
B.Making more trips to the mirror than usual.
C.Looking at themselves in the mirror for a long time.
D.Wondering about the reasons for the marks on their bodies.
2. The example of great apes is used to indicate that ______.
A.dolphins are as intelligent as great apes in a way
B.dolphins are as good at socializing as great apes
C.animals tend to be aware of their bodies in the mirror
D.animals can be trained to recognize their images in the mirror
3. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Dolphins in the MirrorB.Animal Intelligence in the Mirror
C.Scientific Assumption of DolphinsD.Human Sensitivity Towards Dolphins

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章详细讲述了东京湾水质问题产生的原因,以及最近采取的措施。

3 . Bloomberg reported on the status of Tokyo Bay, the open water swimming venue for triathletes (铁人三项运动员). Bloomberg’s report actually sums itself up quite nicely in just two words: “It stinks.”

The question of water quality first came up in 2019. During a water test prior to a paratriathlon race, E.coli was detected in more than double the amount allowed for competition by the International Triathlon Union. A local newspaper quoted one athlete as saying the bay “smelled like a toilet”.

Where the problems lie in this specific case is that there have been concerns over the pollution in Tokyo Bay for a very long time. This is due to the Tokyo metropolis having a mixed sewage (污水) system. In a mixed sewage system, drainage (排水系统) for rainwater and sewage are combined, not separate.

According to Bloomberg’s report, during times of flooding, untreated sewage system gets flushed directly into the bay in an effort to avoid flood damage. So, what happens to the untreated waste water that gets pumped directly into the bay? For the most part, it simply stays in the bay. According to research by Koibuchi, due to the size and depth of the bay, approximately 60 percent of the water in the bay is from the rivers and Tokyo’s drainpipes.

In response to that water test, Tokyo put forward new efforts to clean up the pollution in the bay. These steps include dumping massive amounts of sand into the bay, putting in polyester screens to protect against E.coli, and installing new storage tanks to hold flood runoff, so it can be treated before being released into the bay. Despite these measures, the bay has been emitting an unpleasant smell for a few weeks, according to Bloomberg’s report.

1. According to the passage, E.coli ______.
A.can be a harmful substanceB.comes from the body of a sea animal
C.may help clean the seaD.is a kind of household waste
2. What causes Tokyo Bay to smell unpleasant?
A.Rainwater trapped in it.B.The old storage tank.
C.Untreated sewage system.D.Floodwater from the ground.
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The sand dumped into the bay works well to reduce the smell of the bay.
B.The efforts newly made greatly prevent the bay from emitting a bad smell.
C.The measures taken lately in response to the water test are not so effective.
D.Frequent water tests help to prevent against water pollution.
4. What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.The bad effect of sewage.B.The further measures to be taken.
C.Different opinions about the previous measures.D.Athletes: attitude to the unpleasant smelling.

Debates have been going on     1     the subject of carbon capture. Scientists, especially engineers and geologists, have strongly criticized green groups who claimed that carbon capture and storage (CCS) schemes are costly mistakes.

The scientists insisted that such schemes     2     vital weapons in the battle against global heating. They also warn that failure to set up ways to trap and store carbon would make it     3     (possible) to meet the emissions target by 2050. “CCS is going to be the only effective way in the short term     4     (prevent) our steel industry, cement manufacture and many other processes from continuing to pour emissions into the atmosphere,” said Professor Stuart Haszeldine, of Edinburgh University. “    5     we are to have any hope of keeping global temperature increases down below 2 degrees Celsius, we desperately need to develop ways to capture and store carbon dioxide.”

Green groups claimed CCS would not make “a meaningful contribution to 2050 climate targets”. They say CCS was not reliable to decarbonize the energy system and that CCS has     6     history of over-promising and under-delivering. Instead, they urged the construction of more renewable energy plants     7     (give) priority.

But the claims     8     (dismiss) by engineers and geologists. “These claims are quite unfair,” said Michael Stephenson, director at the British Geological Survey.

A government spokesman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change said, “We are committed to meeting our climate change targets in a way     9     is affordable and provides secure energy to families and businesses. We are considering the role that CCS could play in decarbonization of the UK. But we also need to take government     10     (spend) into account. CCS had better come down in cost.”

8 . India has the world's worst air pollution. Home to 21 of the world's 30 most polluted cities, its poisonous air kills more than one million people each year.

Being the world's second largest brick producer, India's brick kilns (砖窋) account for of black carbon emissions globally. Architect Tejas Sidnal was astonished to discover the construction industry's role in the pollution crisis. "That was a crazy eye opener," he says. "As architects, we are responsible for so much air pollution."

Determined to make construction more sustainable and tackle India's air pollution, Sidnal launched Carbon Craft Design in 2019. The startup takes black carbon extracted from polluted air and upcycles it to make stylish, handcrafted building tiles (瓷砖).

To create the carbon tiles, Carbon Craft Design, together with Graviky Labs, uses a filter device to capture carbon soot (碳黑) from tail gas and fossil fuel generators, removes pollutants such as heavy metals and dust from the soot, and gives the purified carbon to Carbon Craft Design in powder form. The company then mixes the captured carbon with cement and marble waste from quarries to produce monochromatic tiles. The company aims to ensure each tile contains at least waste material. It sells the tiles to architects and retailers (零售商) for per square meter-a high price compared to regular tiles.

As the company expands production, Sidnal hopes to lower prices and produce a cheaper range of carbon tiles. "We want to hit the affordable sector," he says. "Sustainability is not only for the elite (精英)."

Since launching its first tiles a year ago, Carbon Craft Design's customers have included global fashion brands and architecture firms in India. In November 2020, an Adidas store in Mumbai covered the walls and the floor with its carbon tiles. Inquiries from in and out of India came flooding in.

Architect Manan Gala describes the carbon tile as a "winner", which, apart from being sustainable, has better strength than conventional cement tiles due to the carbon content, and the raw and rustic feel adds to the overall charm.

A.Something shocking.B.Something impossible.
C.Something ridiculous.D.Something unavoidable.
2. What can we learn from paragraph 4 ?

Birds are highly intelligent creatures, with complex and specialized forms of communication. Each species has     1     unique way of using body language and vocalizations(发声)to communicate. However, there are some things     2     birds do in general that you can understand. If you pay attention to your     3     (bird)regular mannerisms, you will be able to identify when they have changed. Also, you need to look at their movements or behaviors in context     4     (understand)them. If you can do this, you     5     (be)closer to understanding what your feathered friend is trying to communicate to you.

Birds are     6     (typical)very clean creatures and they spend a lot of time cleaning, preening and grooming their feathers. This is natural self-care behavior that is important for birds to do. Bathing is an important part of feather maintenance for birds. If your bird stops     7     (bathe)itself, that is a sign that it is no longer taking care of     8     (it). This could signal depression, body pain, or lack of mobility. A bird that is singing or whistling a lot is likely very happy. A bird that is     9     (satisfy)is likely to chatter or talk a lot. In fact, if you spend time     10     them, they are likely to increase this chatter when you come around.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了秋季产生焦虑的原因及应对办法。

10 . Some people can't wait for the lovely colors, cooler weather, and cozy sweaters of autumn. In fact, fall is Americans' favorite time, but for a minority of others, the transition from summer creates worry, fear and worse. According to Carrie Landin, a psychologist from the University of Colorado Health Integrative Medicine Center, a significant number of people actually experience autumn anxiety.

For some people, stress is triggered (触发) by environmental factors: Decreases in daylight cause chemical changes in the brain. "Less daylight leads to lower levels of chemicals like serotonin and dopamine that control our emotions," says Kimberly Asner-self, associate professor at Touro Colleges` School of Health Sciences. "As these chemicals drop, the body responds by increasing levels of cortisol. the hormone released in situations where we face threat." The result can be an increased anxiety, difficulty sleeping and depression.

But it's not just increasing darkness that can trigger these symptoms. For people who feel this way every year, some of the reaction is mental. "When we know there's the potential for stress ahead we tend to anticipate the problems, feeling anxious before they even happen," Landin says.

The fall features more than its fair share of impending (迫在眉睫) events: back to school at the beginning of the season and family get-togethers toward the end. Mayra Mendez, a psychologist from Providence Saint Johns Health Center, suggests identifying your personal triggers and making a plan to manage them before they feel overwhelming. For instance, if you're concerned about family issues and holiday parties, decide in advance that it's perfectly OK to say no to some of them. If fall's stricter work and school schedules make you anxious, plan regular breaks and vacations to look forward to.

Finally, you should also find ways to embrace the present moment. Remember: while autumn may throw you a few tricks, there are plenty of treats to be found too.

A.Cooler weather.B.Less daylight.
C.Sleep difficulties.D.Vacation plans.
