Alexis Langlois, who manages a large farm, heard her neighbor crazily knocking on her front door on a Monday afternoon.

“There’s an emergency”, Amber Countryman yelled. “The horses are stuck in the water.” Langlois was struck with “absolute panic”. She threw on her winter boots — without socks — and rushed toward the small pond on the 80-acre property. She was surprised by what she saw: four horses were in the water up to their necks in 10 feet of ice water.

She immediately called 911.While waiting for help to arrive, “people just started showing up,” she said. “Neighbors were pouring in. People came with ropes, chainsaws, shovels and pick axes.”

“I grabbed a bunch of supplies,” said Countryman, whose two teenagers and their friend also as sited with the effort.

“It was-8℃that day,” she said, adding that she brought out handwarmers and water for the helpers.

Everyone was determined to get the horses out of the pond — which is about 15feetwide.

Beneath a six-inch layer of ice, the water was “just barely above freezing”, said Chris Yerkes, the South Kalispell Fire Department chief who rushed to the pond with about a dozen volunteer personnel.

When the firefighters arrived, neighbors had already attempted to pave a path through the ice toward the edge of the pond using pick axes, sledgehammers and shovels, and “we continued with that effort.” Yerkes said. Unfortunately, “as we got closer to the edge, we realized there was about three to four inches of mud.”

The thick layer of mud — which the rescuers couldn’t cut through — blocked the horses from climbing out. Firefighters enlisted additional support from Flathead County Animal Control, as well as staff from local equestrian organization Rebecca Farm.

“There had to have been at least 60 people here,” Langlois said. “It was very swift action on everybody’s part.”

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jeremy was with his father in South Africa, which was far from his hometown Wales. He rarely spent time with his father, a famous wildlife photographer. So far, he wasn’t sure he liked following his dad around. The work seemed mostly hot and boring.

“Ready?” Dad asked. Jeremy nodded and they climbed into the old truck. As the truck moved noisily across the rough dirt, Dad chatted with the local guide Ben. And Jeremy watched for animals.

Suddenly, there came a big crash from the car. Jeremy was shocked to find that the door had fallen off! “It might be a blessing (幸事) in disguise! Now we can see better,” Dad said. Ben threw the door into the back of the truck.

They stopped near a river. Ben said he was friends with the elephants that sometimes gathered here. Maybe they’d see some. Before long, Jeremy saw a small group of elephants in the distance, moving slowly through the grassland towards the water. Dad leaped out of the truck and focused his camera on the largest elephant, whose two long teeth shone in the sun. Jeremy spotted a very young baby elephant walking between two adults. It was tiny, by elephant standards. The two adult elephants kept stopping to wait for their baby.

Jeremy watched as the group neared the river. They trumpeted loudly and flapped their large ears to cool themselves down. Then several larger elephants jumped in the water up to their ears. However, Jeremy lost sight of the baby. Where was it? Then he saw. It was in water up to its eyes, holding its trunk (象鼻) up above the water. Jeremy hoped it could breathe through its trunk, because its mouth was underwater.

Other elephants were using their trunks to spray (喷洒) themselves with the cool water, splashing and playing in the water. It was an elephant party. But the baby elephant was in trouble. “Look!” screamed Jeremy. The bank was too steep (陡峭的) for the baby. It couldn’t climb out of the water. Other elephants tried pushing it, without success. The mother was anxious.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Devon became the man of the house since his father passed away last year, but tonight he was a twelve-year old boy who wanted a puppy for his birthday, and his birthday was tomorrow.

“They say every boy should have a dog of his own, don’t you agree?”

I sighed, knowing what my answer would have to be. “I would love to get you a puppy, but puppies are expensive. They need food and shots and a license. We just can’t afford all that right now, honey.” I lowered my head so he wouldn’t see my tears.

He stood there for a moment. “That’s okay, Mom. I understand,” he whispered. “But some day, when things get better, can we get a puppy?” “Of course, Devon, I promise.” I forced myself to smile.

“When we get a puppy, I am going to name him Rusty.”

“Rusty? That’s a fine name.”

The next morning, I gathered our recyclable bottles and cans which were worth five cents each. We drove to the nearby convenience store and sold them at a nearby store. Then we chose the two most delicious donuts with the money.

Devon grabbed the donut and took a huge bite. On the front sidewalk, he stopped so suddenly that I almost ran into him.

A puppy caught his eye. A young woman was parked just outside the door. Her face was wet with tears. The puppy curled up (蜷缩) in her lap with his nose resting on the driver’s door.

Devon rushed over to the car and giggled (咯咯笑) as he fed the rest of his donut to the puppy and was thanked with a wet puppy lick across the face.

Then I turned to the woman: “What’s wrong?”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.

Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.

In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.

But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.

“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.

“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”

“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandfather looked worried as he felt the inside of Caper’s front hoof(蹄). The small horse was in pain. “It’s warm,” said Grandfather with a sigh. “I think he has a mild case of founder(蹄叶炎). Let him have a rest. In a few days he should be right as rain.”

Caper couldn’t pull the cart, which meant they couldn’t go to the market the next day. The fish couldn’t be sold and they wouldn’t get enough money to pay for the rent. Aislinn had tears in her eyes. “The sea has always been kind to us. There will be more fish. And the rent will get paid. Now off to bed with you. Leave the worrying to me,” said Grandfather, smiling at Aislinn. “Good night,” Aislinn said as she headed toward her room, trying her best to hold back her tears. “Sweet dreams,” Grandfather called after her.

Sleep would not come. Aislinn wished Grandfather could sell the fish he’d worked so hard to catch. She wished they had enough money for the rent. But above all Aislinn wished that Caper’s hooves would stop hurting. She suddenly remembered when she’d twisted(扭伤)her own ankle. Grandfather had told her to keep ice on it, and the swelling had gone down.

“Could the same thing help Caper?” Aislinin wondered. Suddenly Aislinn had a better idea, and she jumped out of bed. She knocked on Grandfather’s bedroom door, and found Grandfather was also wide awake. Aislinn came in and asked Grandfather whether it would help if they stood Caper in the sea, in the cold water. Grandfather thought for a while and said that might work. He asked Aislinn to take a blanket and some hot tea. “You don’t have to stay out that long, you know,” said Grandfather. “I want to,” said Aislinn, filled with hope that her idea would work. With her arms full, she followed Grandfather out into the night.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Snowball came into our lives one winter. Since the moment my dad brought him home, they have formed a close relationship. While Snowball was still young,my dad began training him. A good herding (牧放牲畜) dog is necessary for our farm where cows are raised, so Dad began preparing him for the role. Snowball’s determination to please my dad was amazing. Watching them herd cows together was interesting.

One summer morning when Snowball was six, he herded our cows out of the corral (畜栏). When the cows walked around and ate grass, my mom and I left home to visit my grandma. And as usual, Snowball sadly watched as my dad left for work in the truck. Although Snowball wished to go along, he made no move toward the truck, knowing he shouldn’t leave.

That afternoon, Snowball walked back to the roadside, lay down under a tree and patiently looked down the road, waiting for my dad to return. When finally seeing my dad’s truck back, he stood up right away. Moments later, my dad pulled up beside the tree. As my dad got out of the truck, Snowball ran to him, voicing his joy. And he danced happily around my dad.

Then, it was time for Snowball to herd the cows into the corral. All the cows, except a yellow one, were successfully herded into the corral. This yellow cow refused to go in, though Snowball did his best to herd it. Probably it was because the extreme heat of the day had made this cow angry. When it had no patience anymore, the cow turned and suddenly charged (进攻) at my dad, who was standing nearby. Catching Dad off guard, the cow knocked him to the ground. My dad wanted to go into the nearby truck but his legs got injured. While he was trying to stand up, the cow looked at him in preparation for charging again. Just then, Snowball rushed to help my dad.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The snow was setting in. It was cold and time to go home. I could hear her breathing, but I couldn’t see her clearly in the dark evening. “Diana!” I shouted many times with different voices possible to see what might work.

It had been about nine months since we got this dog and named her Diana. I knew from the moment I set eyes on her that she was the perfect dog for me. I shouted to her again, blew into my cold hands, and pulled my coat up around my neck.

We lived in a far-away area, and my mother didn’t like me walking Diana too late after school. Mother often got home late and didn’t want me in the woods past dark. But I was a teenager and loved challenging the rules, so I ignored her warnings (警告) and set out later than usual that day.

However, as the sun set and the night began falling, I couldn’t help but feel nervous. Thoughts started flooding my head about losing my way. Or, worse yet, some frightening animals might come out of the dark unexpectedly.

“Diana!” I shouted again, this time with true fear in my voice. She finally came back to me. I breathed a sigh of relief (松了口气) as I tied her to the leash (拴狗绳), giving her a small treat and touching her ears. Diana didn’t seem to notice my fear of the dark. I took a moment to calm down and then we set off in the direction of our home.

After about ten minutes, we had lost the path. I looked around and could see the open surface of a dried-up lake. I knew that home wasn’t far away. I’d never walked across the lake before, and my mother had warned against it, but I felt afraid and just wanted to get home quickly. So, rather than going all the way around, I decided I’d feel safer taking a quicker way than usual to go across the lake. Diana went first. In the darkness, I could see that the icy surface was hard enough for Diana to walk on.
