Two little birds were happily sitting on the rock, just having finished their lunch. Their parents had allowed them, for the first time, to go and hunt for their lunch by themselves. And they had enjoyed every bit of the freedom.

Suddenly, a net came and fell on both. They struggled to pass through it but in vain. Two boys jumped down from the branch above them. They quickly gathered the net. One of the boys, Eric, shouted to his little brother Max. “We have finally succeeded after ten days of waiting.”

“Yes, what luck! They look much more beautiful than ordinary birds. Let’s go home and put them in our cage,” Eric said joyfully. They ran home with the birds.

The two little birds were terribly frightened. They thought of their mother who must be anxiously waiting for them.

When the two boys got to the house gate, the sweet smell came out of the kitchen. Their mother Amla was baking cakes, which were what the boys couldn’t live without.

Hearing the boys’ footsteps, Amla anxiously asked, “Where have you been? I was getting worried. I’m cooking your favorite cakes.”

“Look, Mom, we have caught two beautiful birds! We are going to cage them. They will play with us.” Max proudly showed them to Amla.

Seeing the young birds shivering (发抖) in the boys’ hands, Amla said, “They are indeed beautiful. But they are so young and look so scared! They need their mother. Set them free.”

The boys said, “We will look after them.” Amla insisted that they shouldn’t keep them. They turned to their father John for help. Similarly,” John said, “It is not good to cage these birds. We should not take away their freedom.”

The boys were in tears and begged, “We love them so much. Please let us keep then.” “Well, just put them in the cage for the time being. Let’s enjoy your favorite cakes.” The boys jumped with joy. In the evening, John said to Amla, “The birds look very rare. We’d better do some research. Maybe we should call the police first.”

On one stormy afternoon last year, I was running home from school with my umbrella when I heard a bird start to sing. Out of curiosity, I went to have a look. Then I saw a brightly colorful bird nesting in a big tree. But the nest suddenly fell off.

With mercy and love, I decided to see if the bird had a chance to survive. Just as I went closer, I noticed a little head sticking out of the nest. I found that it had a wet broken wing, so it couldn’t fly. It looked so weak as if it were dying. So I placed it gently in my hand and covered it with my umbrella.

I carefully took it home and thought down the road how to explain this to my parents. What if they would not want it and throw it away? I could not take that chance, so I went out and put it in the back garden and gave it a warm blanket for the night.

In the following days, I went to school as usual, but somehow, I fell in love with biology class, especially when the teacher explained something about birds. I learned to feed the bird, and I hurried to care for it when the school was over. It was slowly recovering and growing. Holiday came at last. I couldn’t help telling my good friends about it. Then we secretly went to the back garden to look at my lovely bird. However, we were amazed to find that it had been missing.

Just as I thought where it had gone, a great surprise came all of a sudden. I found it staring at my cat in the distance. Catching sight of my appearance, it turned and came towards me. So I went to get it some water and birdseed. It was then that I found it grew into a big bird like a phoenix(凤凰) in the fairy tale. My friends all praised it, “What a beautiful bird it is!” Hearing their words, I felt truly proud. Fortunately, my care was not in vain but paid off.

3 . 阅读下面文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文。

On his way home, Jonathon saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar. She rubbed her head against his hand and began to purr (发呼噜声). She reminded Jonathon of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky’s fur had been long and gray too.

Jonathon petted the cat for a while. Then he said, “I have to go,” and continued home. To his surprise, the cat followed him.

When Jonathon was home, he walked up the porch steps and went in the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Jonathon made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Jonathon sighed. “I know it’s not a good idea to feed a stray cat,” he said, “but you look so hungry! I can’t sit here and eat without feeding you too!”

Jonathon put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Jonathon watched, she ate every scrap of turkey and then began to clean her face and paws. “Wow!” Jonathon said, “You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you.”

Jonathon finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted (乱蓬蓬的). Jonathon remembered that Smoky’s brush and toys were stored in the garage. “I’m going to clean you up a little,” Jonathon said to the cat.

Jonathon found Smoky’s brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat’s fur began to get lighter. “Hey!” Jonathon said, realizing the truth. “You’re not gray—you’re white!”

After her brushing, the cat climbed onto Jonathon’s lap and purred. “You’re so friendly, you probably belong to someone,” Jonathon said. “I bet you’re just lost.” When Jonathon’s father came home, Jonathon showed him the cat that had stretched out in a patch of sun on the porch. “Why don’t you make some signs to place in the neighborhood,” his father suggested.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Soapy is a twenty-four-pound rabbit. People look surprised when they first touch him and remark how soft he is. I've noticed he seems to make everyone who meets him a little softer, too. So when I started to work as a volunteer in the community, I decided to take him with me as a therapy(疗法)animal.

One day, Soapy and I visited a shelter for women who had suffered from violence. The women in the shelter all looked at me in low spirits. No one smiled a greeting. One little girl in particular caught my attention. Never raising her eyes, never reaching out, she wandered in and out of the gathered group. The staff informed me that the little girl, named Alice, had been there for over a month and had not spoken the entire time. Nothing they tried had any effect. I didn't want to imagine what would have happened to rob this little girl of the curiosity and enthusiasm so natural to childhood.

Spreading a blanket on the floor, I sat down and opened Soapy's carrier. As the women circled around me, I told the group that Soapy would come to them if they sat on the blanket. Several women did this, including Alice. In a short time, Soapy emerged from his carrier and slowly jumped from one woman to another. After touching Soapy, these women looked down.   and smiled softly. Soapy continued his rounds, and the women gradually began to talk about Soapy and I chatted with them as I kept one eye on Alice. She sat rigidly at the edge of the blanket legs held out straight in front of her. She was staring hard at Soapy. It appeared that Soapy kept making eye contact with her, too. He would jump from person to person, each visit taking him closer to her. I began to wonder if he was stopping to give her time to watch him. I looked at her. again. She sat there nervously, just staring.

Paragraph 1:
Finally Soapy came to a stop when he was about two inches from Alice's legs.

Paragraph 2:
Days later, I revisited the shelter with Soapy: surprised to find Alice even happier than before.

5 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I met Bosco in the remote wilderness near Mount Robson. At the end of a long day of backpacking, I had put up my tent beside a river and was preparing to catch supper. Then I looked up, and there he was: an enormous black bear, slowly circling within 30 yards.

He wasn’t Bosco to me yet, and I viewed his presence with fear. However, I decided to go about my fishing. The bear came along.

I’ve lived with wild creatures for 30 years, always respecting their first fear—fast movements—so I let the bear see every slow move. Soon he was sitting less than five feet away, interested in my activity. When I landed a fish I threw it to him lightly. He gulped (大口吞咽). And then he moved closer and settled half his 225 kilograms next to me!

When darkness set in, I was still fishing for that bear, attracted as much by his gentle manners as by his eagerness for fish. I began to think of him in a friendly way as Bosco, and I didn’t mind when he followed me back to camp.

After supper, I build up the fire and sat on the sleeping bag. The moment I comfortably lay, he walked over and sat down beside me. I rather enjoyed his warmth. I listened to the rain beating on the tent in time with the steady, powerful heartbeat beneath his thick coat.

Then suddenly Bosco began licking (舔) my hands. Guessing what he wanted, I got him a handful of salt. He excitedly licked until the last grain of salt was gone.

It is from the fish and salt I offered him that I received his trust, dependence and friendship. During the night, he left and came to the sleeping bag several times. Each time he climbed around and over me, but he never put his full weight down when he touched me.
