J: In your book, you write that when it comes to weather, “abnormal is the new normal."     1     ?

T: We're seeing storms like we've never seen before in terms of intensity and frequency. Storms that occurred maybe every hundred years are now occurring every three years. That's the new normal we' re living in.

5 . On World Oceans Day, which falls on June 8, the US National Geographic Society announced it would recognize the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, bringing the global total to five.

Unlike the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans—which are defined by the continents that bound them—the Southern Ocean is instead characterized by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(南极洋流). According to the National Geographic, the Southern Ocean includes most of the waters surrounding Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude(纬度).

"Encircled by the powerfully swift ACC, it is the only ocean to touch three others and to completely embrace a continent rather than being embraced by them," Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist and oceanographer, told the Daily Mail.

Those familiar with the Southern Ocean know it's unlike any other. "Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what's so charming about it, but they'll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more awful and the landscapes more captivating than anywhere else you can go," Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told National Geographic.

National Geographic hopes their revised maps will bring public awareness to the region, thereby encouraging Southern Ocean conservation—but its significance is beyond that.

"We think it's really important from an educational standpoint, as well as from a map-labeling standpoint, to bring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean," Alex Tait, National Geographic Society geographer, told The Post. "So when students learn about parts of the ocean world, they learn it's an interconnected ocean, and they learn there are these regions called oceans that are really important, and there's a distinct one in the icy waters around Antarctica."

1. Why is the Southern Ocean different from other oceans?
A.It has never been explored before.
B.It surrounds the Antarctic all around.
C.It is enclosed by the fast-flowing ACC.
D.It has ecologically distinct environment.
2. What does the underlined word "captivating" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strange.B.Unusual.
C.Attractive.D.Informal.
3. What does the National Geographic think of the Southern Ocean?
A.It will be instructive for students.
B.It will promote tourism development.
C.It will encourage public to treasure water.
D.It will draw scientists to study in the Antarctic.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.World Oceans DayB.Revised Antarctic Maps
C.Adding a New OceanD.New Discovery under the Sea

9 . Carrots are grown on farms and in family gardens throughout the world. Carrots are easy to raise and easy to harvest. They taste good, and people from all countries love them.

When people think of carrots, they usually picture in their minds a vegetable that is long, thin and orange in colour. But carrots come in many different sizes and shapes. And not all carrots are orange. For the best results, carrots should be grown in sandy soil (土壤) that does not hold water for a long time. The soil also should have no rocks. To prepare your carrots garden, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer. Weather, soil conditions and age will affect how carrots taste. Experts say warm days, cool nights and a medium soil temperature are the best conditions for growing carrots that taste great.

Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their good taste. But carrots lose their sweetness if you wait too long to remove them from the ground. The best way to determine if a carrot is ready to be harvested is by its colour. Usually, the brighter the colour, the better the taste.

Carrots are prepared and eaten in many different ways. They are cut in thin pieces and added to other vegetables. They are cooked by themselves or added to stews. Or, once they are washed, they can also be eaten just as they come out of the ground.

10 . Some years back, nobody paid much attention to the waste in homes and landfills (垃圾填埋场). It became so vast that the government started getting concerned the phenomenon could create a disaster. A solution had to be found, one that is kind to humans and the environment.     1     Below are the reasons why we need to recycle.

Conserve natural resources

2     If a lot of pressure is put on these natural resources, they might be run out of fast. The only way to stop the pressure applied to these resources is recycling. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, recycling one ton of paper saves up about 17 trees as well as 7 tons of water.

Reduce carbon emissions (碳排放)

Recycling greatly reduces carbon emissions, commonly referred to as greenhouse gases.     3     Whatever your opinion on global warming is, a lot of people agree to the idea that everyone needs to play a role in minimizing the effects of emissions.

    4

Recycling has been proved to save up lots of energy. Companies that use recycled aluminum (铝) save up to 95% energy during production of aluminum products when compared to companies that source raw materials.

One person makes a big difference

Most people believe that one person cannot make any difference in regard to recycling waste. That thinking might apply in other fields.     5     Averagely, every American produces about 1,600 pounds of waste every year. Up to 1,100 pounds of waste is able to be recycled every year per person. That represents half a ton per individual.

A.Save energy.
B.Protect the environment.
C.That’s how recycling was born.
D.Many kinds of resources are considered limited.
E.You and your neighbor’s effort to recycle will mean clean surrounding air.
F.However, in recycling, an individual’s contribution counts.
G.If wastes were not recycled, they would end up being burned, giving out greenhouse gases.
