文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了水豚的生活习性。

1 . Capybaras (水豚) are group animals, so they do not like being alone. In fact, leaving a capybara alone is not only uncomfortable for the animal, but it can be harmful to their physical health, as well as their mental well-being. Capybaras love to talk to each other throughout the day. Groups of capybaras spend their days sunbathing along the edge of rivers, where they enjoy swimming together in the water. They spend half of their lives in the water.

Since they spend so much time around water, it makes sense that capybaras would come into contact with a wide variety of other animals who stop in for a drink. Capybaras are gentle and peaceful river animals who enjoy napping (小睡) along the water’s edge — and often do so with other animal species as well. You can find pictures all over the Internet of these lovely animals lying beside turtles, birds, ducks, rats, and even monkeys as they enjoy a nap by the water.

Capybaras are also known to be excellent and friendly taxis in the animal world. Birds and monkeys commonly stand on the back of a capybara for a ride as capybaras search for grass to eat. Sometimes capybaras even serve as boats for other animals, letting them sit on their heads as they swim through the water!

However, if you see a capybara lying on its side with a yellow-headed caracara (长腿兀鹰) stopped on its body, don’t panic just yet. Most likely the capybara is enjoying a nice spa day. Birds often make friends with capybaras and act as a natural cleaning service, picking off bugs (虫子) that live in the capybara’s fur. It’s a symbiotic (共生的) relationship, since the yellow-headed caracara also gets to enjoy eating a bunch of tasty bugs.

1. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us about capybaras?
A.Their life habits.B.Their survival skills.
C.Their appearance.D.Their risks in health.
2. Why does the author call capybaras “friendly taxis”?
A.They search for food for birds and monkeys.
B.They carry their food by riding on another animal.
C.They allow other animals to stay on their backs or heads.
D.They guide other animals to swim through the water.
3. What does the author mean by saying “don’t panic just yet” in the last paragraph?
A.The caracara won’t attack you.
B.The capybara won’t suffer any injury.
C.The caracara may just take a break.
D.The capybara may be providing its cleaning service.
4. What is true about capybaras according to the passage?
A.They hate lying beside lovely animals.
B.They enjoy swimming alone.
C.They are aggressive animals.
D.They can live in harmony with other animal species.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。根据世界自然基金会最近的一项研究,自1970年以来,世界动物数量减少了三分之二以上。文章分析了背后的原因以及解决方案。

2 . The world’s animal populations have decreased by more than two-thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had reduced by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation (开发) of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat (威胁) to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “if we cannot limit warming to 1.5℃, climate change is likely to become the primary cause of biodiversity (生物多样性) loss in the coming years.”

Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have reduced by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016.

These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species’ population reduction can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem’s (生态系统) ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to thrive (蓬勃发展), but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems.

Our future depends on reversing (扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the wholeness of the ecosystems on which we all depend.

1. Which may be the main cause of the decrease of the wildlife populations in the future?
A.Illegal hunting.B.Global warming.
C.Land-use change.D.Environmental pollution.
2. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A.By listing data.B.By telling a story.
C.By referring to a concept.D.By analyzing the causes.
3. Why does the author worry about current trends?
A.Because the reduction of species will impact the ecosystem.
B.Because humans will be the biggest threat to the wildlife.
C.Because the increase of species’ population will threaten human beings.
D.Because the humans have been expecting to thrive.
4. Who plays the leading role in reversing the loss?
A.Animals.B.Animal protection organizations.
C.Research teams.D.Human beings.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了一项新研究发现,世界上10000种爬行动物中有近五分之一面临灭绝的威胁。并介绍了原因和保护措施。

3 . A new study by the Zoological Society of London has found that nearly one in five of the world’s 10,000 species of reptiles (爬行动物) are threatened with extinction. The study, which has been printed in the journal Biological Conservation, was carried out by more than 200 experts who assessed the risk of extinction of 1,500 reptiles selected at random from around the globe.

The primary author of the paper, Monika Bohm, explained to the Zoological Society:” Reptiles are often associated with extreme habitats and tough environmental conditions, so it is easy to assume that they will be fine in our changing world. “However, that’s far from the truth:” Many species are very high specialized in terms of habitat use and the climatic conditions they require for day to day functioning, “Bohm said.” This makes them particularly sensitive to environmental changes. “The paper highlights three critically endangered species in its research, including the jungle runner lizard Ameiva vittata, which has only ever been spotted in the Cochabamba region of the Bolivian jungle—an area under threat from the growth of agriculture and logging. The two most recent searches for the species have been unsuccessful. Meanwhile in Haiti, six of the nine species of Anolis lizard in the country risk extinction due to increasing deforestation (毁林).

Also at risk are freshwater turtles, with 50% of all species at risk of extinction from hunting; turtle parts are in high demand as ingredients in traditional medicine. According to the study 30% of freshwater reptile species are also in danger of completely disappearing.

Reptiles have a long evolutionary history: snakes, lizards, crocodiles and tuataras first appeared on earth around 300 million years ago. They are an important part of many ecosystems. ”This is a very important step towards assessing the conservation status of reptiles globally, “Philip Bowles from the IUCN Species Survival Commission said in response to the study.” Tackling the identified habitat loss is key conservation priorities in order to transfer declines in these reptiles.”

1. How many species of reptiles are endangered?
A.1,000.B.1,500.C.2,000.D.5,000.
2. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Environmental changes cause species variation.
B.More trees are being cut down in the Bolivian jungle.
C.Reptiles can easily adapt to extreme habitats and climate.
D.Species extinction results from tough environment conditions.
3. Why are freshwater turtles at risk?
A.Because local people hunt them for fun.B.Because their parts have medical value.
C.Because they struggle to survive in the wild.D.Because they can be cooking ingredients.
4. How can we conserve these reptiles according to the last paragraph?
A.To reduce habitat destruction.B.To increase the harvest of forest trees.
C.To assess the current conditions of reptiles.D.To further the study on the evolutionary history.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了热浪袭击欧洲以及各地政府采取的措施。

5 . A heatwave has hit many countries in Europe, pushing temperatures over 40℃. A heatwave is a long period of unusually hot weather. The heat is expected to continue until the end of July.

The Italian Island of Sardinia reached 46℃ on 18 July. The Italy government has asked people to dress in linen(a thin, light material) and to stay indoors between 10 am and 6 pm. The government has asked people to drink plenty of water but avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and coffee, which can make you feel thirstier. In Rome, the country’s capital, people aged over 70can go to swimming pools for free to help them keep cool.

Wildfires have broken out in many places. In Greece, which recorded 41℃ on 18 July, fires near the capital, Athens, have destroyed huge areas of forest and thousands of people have been moved to safety. Heatwaves can make fires worse because hot weather dries plants, which fuel the fires.

In the US, temperatures in Death Valley, California, hit 53℃ on 18 July, close to the hottest ever recorded on Earth. On 16 July, the US National Weather Service issued warnings in parts of the country, affecting more than 80 million people.

Despite the high temperatures in many European countries, the UK is not experiencing a heatwave. This is because a different weather pattern has brought rain and lower temperatures to the UK.

The heatwave in Europe is being caused by a weather pattern that has stopped the air from moving very much. That means the hot, dry weather has got stuck and temperatures have kept rising. Earth is also experiencing a natural climate pattern called El Nino(厄尔尼诺), which causes the water in the eastern Pacific Ocean to warm up more than usual. This can lead to hot weather around the world. Temperatures in some parts of Europe were expected to fall on 20 July.

1. What suggestion did the Italian government give to avoid high temperatures?
A.Provide free swimming pools to keep young people cool.
B.Wear thick clothes to prevent the invasion of heat.
C.Drink enough amounts of coffee to keep the mind clear.
D.Don’t go outdoors during high temperature periods.
2. What do we know about the wildfires in Greece?
A.The fires were mainly caused by people.
B.The heatwaves fueled the spread of wildfires.
C.The fires had already killed a thousand people.
D.The entire forest has been destroyed into ruins.
3. What prevented the UK from experiencing the heatwaves of Europe?
A.Different weather patterns.B.Different geographic locations.
C.Global El Nino phenomenon.D.The effect of the Pacific Ocean.
4. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The hottest city on record in the world has finally emerged.
B.The hot weather caused by heatwaves is coming to an end.
C.Heatwaves swept across Europe and America except the UK.
D.The El Nino phenomenon led to the global high temperatures.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了田纳西州的一家动物园出生了一只没有斑点的长颈鹿,文章解释了斑点对于长颈鹿的作用以及这只小长颈鹿出生的意义。

6 . Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world’s most uncommon giraffes.

On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated (网状的) giraffe, one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother’s care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.

Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.

“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr. David Bright, who runs the zoo, “It will easily be a key target for poachers (偷猎者) because she’s so unusual.”

Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.

This brown giraffe’s birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.

1. What do we know about the spots of giraffes?
A.They help protect giraffes.B.They are the same pattern.
C.They look like giraffes’ footprints.D.They appear on giraffes occasionally.
2. What makes the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo special?
A.Its extremely large size.B.Its light brown fur.
C.Its unusual eating habit.D.Its absence of spots.
3. What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Recognized.B.Endangered.C.Doubled.D.Balanced.
4. Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe?
A.Awkward.B.Worrying.C.Meaningful.D.Foreseeable.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章就如何做一个负责任的露营者给出建议。

7 . Be A Responsible Camper

Being a responsible camper is about more than just respecting your neighbors and observing the boundaries set by campsites.     1    . Please keep sustainable camping guidelines in mind while planning a trip into the great outdoors.

Leave no trace.     2     Follow the principles: “take only pictures, leave only footprints”. Most “leave no trace” principles focus on reducing our impact on the natural environment. Following the same rules for hiking and other outdoor activities is one of the best ways to show your respect for a natural destination.

3     Harmful sunscreen chemicals can pollute bodies of water and may take many years to break down in the natural environment, so be mindful of what you put on your bodies before jumping into that lake.

Respect the wildlife. If you’re camping in e popular area with plenty of people around, it’s easy to forget that you’re actually sharing space with wild animal habitats. Sometimes, too much interaction with people can disturb the natural balance and make animals more aggressive or lead to more human-wildlife conflicts. Try to keep all of your food out of reach from wildlife.     4

Practice fire safety. While this is especially relevant on the west coast of the United States, where wildfire season is most threatening, fire safety should always be a top priority while camping.     5     In areas known for having greater fire danger, it pays to have a shovel (铲子) or a bucket of water bandy to take care of any runaway flames.

A.Aim for zero waste.
B.Keep waterways clean.
C.Only build fires in fixed sites or rings.
D.And most importantly, remember never to feed wild animals.
E.Taking your campsite off the beaten path may sound adventurous.
F.Always leave your campsite the same as or better than you found it.
G.It’s about having the lowest impact possible on the surrounding environment.
