文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了可以欣赏樱花盛开的一些国家,樱花的品种以及与樱花相关的饮食和乐高雕塑背后的灵感来源等信息。

1 . You’ll only find cherry blossoms in a handful of countries.

Called sakura in Japan, the cherry blossoms of Yoshino and Kyoto are world-famous. Tourists flock to the country each spring to try their hand at a centuries-old activity “flower viewing”. You don’t have to fly to Japan to see them, though. In the US, the cherry blossoms of Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston are all beautiful in their own way. The flowers can also be viewed in many European and Asian countries, as well as Brazil and Australia in the southern hemisphere.

There are hundreds of cherry tree varieties.

Japan in particular is home to hundreds of types of cherry trees -possibly more than 600.Some types bear fruit, while others don’t. The flowers of many trees change from dark pink to light pink to white throughout the different stages of blossoming, while others progress from greenish yellow to white to pink. One variety, called Kanzan, was bred to have “double blossoms” — or up to28 petals (花瓣) on each flower, compared to the Yoshino tree’s five petals.

You can get arrested for picking a cherry blossom in Washington, D. C.

Resist the urge to take a cherry blossom home with you as a souvenir. In D.C. at least, breaking off a blossom or branch is viewed as destruction of federal property. Those who break this rule could receive a citation (传票), or worse, be arrested. It goes without saying that it’s also illegal to climb the trees. If they sustain damage to their branches, they will never be able to grow new blossom on that particular branch again.

Both the blossoms and leaves are edible.

In Japan, no part of the cherry blossom tree pes to waste. The preserved leaves are used as edible mochi wrappers (a rice cake filled with sweet bean paste), and a number of seasonal snacks feature sakura as a key ingredient Sakura-flavored versions of Pepsi, Coke, tea, and even Starbucks lattes are all popular drinks. You can also find Kit Kats and Pocky snack sticks that taste like sakura.

They were the inspiration behind a record-setting LEGO sculpture.

Legoland Japan, a theme park in Nagoya, set a Guinness World Record in 2018 for the largest LEGO brick cherry blossom tree ever made. The trees stood 14 feet tall, weighed over 7000 pounds, and consisted of more than 800,000 LEGO bricks.

文章大意:本文是说明文,介绍了四种适合在后院种植的蔬菜。

4 . Planting the right seeds(种子)at the right time will not take as lots of efforts as we think. And some vegetables do grow themselves well without paying too much attention. Here are 4 vegetables that are perfect for a backyard garden.

Green beans

There is really only one important rule for planting green beans—don’t plant them too early. They won’t survive a frost. They may also stop producing in the middle of the summer, but if you continue to water them, they will continue to produce once the temperatures start to drop in early fall. The most time-intensive part of growing beans is in the harvest. The more frequently you pick up beans, the more beans it will grow.

Brussels sprouts(抱子甘蓝)

This sweet vegetable can be grown in nearly any home garden with rich sunlight. They have a long growing season compared with other vegetables. Their taste improves if they are covered with frost. However, they can only bear a few days of cold weather, so be sure to harvest them as quickly as possible.

Broccoli(西兰花)

Broccoli is a cool-weather plant that grows best in spring and fall. It can be planted in early spring for a summer harvest, or in late summer to be harvested in fall. If grown in winter, to avoid heavy frost, broccoli can also be grown indoors and moved to the garden when temperatures rise. When growing broccoli, be sure to watch out for pests(害虫).

Peas

Peas are a great choice for new gardeners. All you need is a container that is at least 10 inches deep and something for the plants to climb. They prefer low temperatures, and once the heat of summer hits, pea plants will stop producing. If your garden space is limited, you can pull them up in the summer and replace peas with another crop that likes the heat

1. What can you do to harvest more green beans?
A.Plant them early.B.Gather them in time.
C.Grow them indoors.D.Avoid watering them in summer.
2. What will happen when Brussels sprouts are covered with frost?
A.It will taste better.B.It will grow better.
C.It will attract pests.D.It will go bad immediately.
3. What do broccoli and peas have in common?
A.They can survive frost.B.They enjoy cool weather.
C.They take up a lot of space.D.They stop growing in summer.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了树木和气候变化的相互影响作用。

5 . The earth’s climate is largely controlled by how much of the sun’s light and heat is absorbed and reflected. By absorbing the sun’s heat, trees cool the air.

The interaction of this relationship with an area’s topography (地势), latitude (纬度), and altitude, can create microclimates (微气候), just as trees create microclimates almost any place they are by providing a windbreak (风林) and shade. Think about it: On a hot, sunny day, it’s always cooler beneath a shade tree. A city with more tall trees is cooler in the summer than a similar city with fewer trees, which translates into less energy use and lowers cooling costs. Also, in using less energy, less air pollution is created.

The most important role that rural trees and forests play is taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The living tissue (组织) of a tree is a storage vault (拱顶) for carbon, which would otherwise contribute to the greenhouse effect and to global climate change. To put it most simply, more trees can decrease the rate of climate change and help us withstand its effects, potentially resulting in less intense storms, fewer infectious diseases, a more stable water supply, and fewer wildfires.

Trees, however, are affected by the effects of climate warming. Areas once too cold to support trees now can, and as forests migrate north, harmful insects that were once held at bay (使不能接近) by winter freezes can do damage to native species. Tropical (热带的) vines called lianas (藤本植物) are now growing faster than the trees they climb, causing trees in the Amazon and other rainforests to die at an alarming rate.

Trees and forests can either be the key to slowing climate change and reducing its effects, or they can become its victims. It’s up to us.

1. Trees are believed to create microclimates in that __________.
A.tress can take in large sum of sunlight
B.tress can effectively change the weather
C.tress can help us save more money on cooling
D.tress can stop the strong wind and supply shade
2. With the climate becoming warmer, __________.
A.more types of trees will be endangered
B.some rare forest species will grow faster
C.tropical vines find their wonderful world
D.some harmful insects will be under control
3. What does the underlined word “withstand” mean in the text?
A.Make up.B.Stand up to.
C.Think about.D.Bring out.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Greenhouse effect is increasing sharply.
B.Climate change does great damage to trees.
C.Many native species will be frozen to death.
D.Forests and climate change influence each other.

Travelling around Europe is always     1     (excite), because it’s full of interesting things to see, from historical, culturally important monuments (历史遗迹) to natural sites. But Europe is also full     2     magical and mysterious locations that will surprise even the experienced travellers and blow the minds of anyone who sees     3     (they).

Some of them are natural, while others are man-made. But there’s something similar about all these places — all of them are so mysterious     4     if you go there, you’ll feel completely different and you’ll never forget your experience.

Are you ready     5     (take) the most amazing journey of your life? First and foremost, put Crooked Forest in Europe on your list!

One of the most wonderful     6     (forest) in the world, Crooked Forest is located in Poland, close to the border with Germany. It’s a small grove (小树林) and all trees in it have a quite strange shape. They     7     (bend) over almost 90 degrees at the trunk and then they twist back straight again and keep on growing straight up, like all normal trees do.

The only thing we know about this forest is that it was planted in     8     1930s. Why the trees took this strange shape still remains a mystery. According to one of the theories, it was done to produce     9     (natural) bended wood for boats, but the     10     (produce) was stopped as a result of the German invasion.

7 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个词(冠词,介词,代词或连词),或在空白处填入单词的正确形式。

Plants cannot move from place to place, but seeds can. They can travel great distances. They may be carried by the wind or upon the water. They may also be carried by animals or people. Seeds     1     (carry) by the wind often have special shapes. Maple seeds have wings that spin and keep them in the air for longer, allowing them to land in all kinds of places.     2     (depend) on the strength of the wind, they can sometimes travel for hundreds of kilometres.

Coconuts are carried along by ocean     3     (current). When a coconut falls from a tree onto the beach, the sea picks     4     up at high tide and carries it away to grow somewhere else. Its hard shell allows it to float on the water for    5     long time. Another way for seeds to travel is through the digestive systems of animals. Many plants produce     6     (attract) fruits that animals like to eat. The animal receives the nutrients of the fruit,     7     it does not digest the seed, which is passed out some time     8     (late). Of course, animals move, so the seed can easily end     9     a long way away from the parent plant, especially if the fruit     10     (eat) by a bird.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了2021年度第二次打破世界纪录的最重樱桃。

9 . This summer, Guinness World Records chose a big cherry as the heaviest ever recorded. A Carmen cherry, harvested by brothers Giuseppe and Alberto Rosso, clocked up 33 grams with a circumference (周长) of around 5 inches. At their farm, Cascina Canape, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, the Rosso brothers claim to have grown many cherries of similar size over the last few years. But it was only in 2021 that they decided to “get serious” in seeking official recognition for their fruit.

However, this is the second time the world record has been broken for the heaviest cherry in 2021. Another grower, from Ferrara, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, harvested a cherry this year weighing 26.45 grams. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that the record was broken twice in Italy, since the country is Europe’s largest cherry producer. Yet Piedmont, where the latest record was set, is not one of the many Italian regions that grow the most cherries, such as Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Campania, and Lazio.

Though their farm is only 15 acres, the Rosso brothers grow over 70 types of cherries. Consumers today tend to buy the larger, sweeter fruits, and the winning Carmen variety has both of these characteristics. But to achieve the record size, nothing can be left to chance, “Pruning (修剪) is very important,” explains Alberto. “The main purpose is not to overload the plant with fruits: if there are too many, they may all ripen. But then we would have cherries of smaller dimensions with less sugar in them, because the plant would not be able to feed everyone in the same way.”

Also, one may think that large cherries must grow on very large trees. It’s actually the opposite: many new cherry tree types are only about 13 feet high, yet they are the ones that produce the largest fruits.

1. What can we learn about the winning cherry?
A.It is 5 inches in height.
B.It is 26.45 grams in weight.
C.It was brought in by two Italian brothers.
D.It was from the region growing the most cherries.
2. What does the underlined phrase “clock up” mean in paragraph 1?
A.timedB.grewC.equalledD.weighed
3. Which cherry trees may produce the largest fruits?
A.Those growing in Piedmont.B.Those small trees pruned properly.
C.Those extremely tall trees.D.Those with cherries ripening fast.
4. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A journal.B.An advertisement.C.A textbook.D.A brochure.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要描述了植物是有意识的,可以与周边环境进行沟通交流。

10 . A famous book from the 70s called The Secret Life of Plants says that plants are conscious (有意识的).     1     In one study, plant exposed (裸露) to Mozart were healthier and grew faster than plants exposed to Jimi Hendrix. Some say these studies that claim plants have a taste for music are full of holes. But there is growing research on plant intelligence and plant communication.

Plants don’t have brains so they can’t think in the same way as humans.     2     They can even communicate this information to nearby plants. Researchers in England cut the leaves of cabbages (卷心菜).The threatened cabbages then produced a poisonous gas that protects them from certain insects.     3     Those healthy cabbages nearby seemed to be reacting to a warning from their cabbage neighbors.

4     Of course, plants don’t have ears, but some scientists think they can feel vibrations. Italian scientist Dr Gagliano recorded clicking noises produced by corn seedlings (幼苗). She then placed these seedlings in water and played them similar sounds. Curiously, the corn seedlings grew towards the loudspeakers.

5     Whether or not there is an intention to communicate is still up in the air. Whatever the case, plants are stranger and more wonderful than we can imagine.

A.But plants can sense their surroundings.
B.They even have a preference for music.
C.Some plants can communicate with sound.
D.The study also showed plants will row towards the sound of water.
E.So there is no doubt that plants arc communicating with their neighbors
F.Strangely, the uncut cabbages nearby also began to give off a poisonous gas.
G.The researchers believe plants are communicating with their neighbors through their roots.
