Let’s ride bicycles

Good morning, everyone! I’m Jack from Honor Senior high school. The topic of my speech is “Let’s ride bicycle”.

As is known to all, with the     1    (improve) of people’s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport,     2    (bring) great convenience to our life.     3    , they have also caused some problems such as air     4    (pollute) and traffic jams.

How can we solve the problems then? As far as I am concerned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For    5     thing, bicycles don’t need     6    (some) petrol and they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally     7    (friend) because they won’t give off waste gas. What’s more, riding bicycles is a good way for us     8    (exercise) and it is beneficial to our health.

Therefore, let’s take the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by     9    (ride) bicycles. Come on and     10    us !

As Shanxi Province suffered from     1    record-breaking rainfall and floods, thousands of ancient building were also     2     great risk.     3     (fortunate), thanks to accurate weather forecasts and a timely response, most of the province’s ancient buildings were protected in advance     4    (prevent) flooding and did not suffer too much damage. However, as a province with the     5    (large) number of ancient architectural sites in the country, Shanxi     6    (know) as the “treasure house of ancient Chinese architecture”, but during the recent floods and landslides    7    (cause) by days of heavy rainfall, there are still many ancient buildings in danger.

According to Shanxi Evening News, at least 16 ancient buildings registered partial collapses, cracks or serious leaking during the rare continuous rainfall,     8     also affected the safety of the surrounding houses. In Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi, multiple major historical and cultural sites protected at the national level were damaged to     9     (vary) extent(程度), including the Jin Temple and the Tianlongshan Grottoes notable for the Buddhist temples located inside. In some temples, roofs leaked after days of rainstorm and retaining walls collapsed or cracked. Roads to tourist     10     (attraction) were also damaged by landslides because of the wet soil.

Ten years ago, Sir Richard Branson launched an exciting challenge. A reward of $25 million would be offered to anyone if he/she     1    (come) up with an achievable and sustainable way to remove greenhouse gases from the air. He thought such an innovation would soon come true, and that    2    (power) people like him would carry out a top-down solution in one fell swoop (一下子).

No such situation appeared, not even with the massive reward. But all is not lost. Every year, about 1.6 million tons of soil flows into the Yellow River, China's    1    (two)longest river. The soil contains materials to keep the    2    (nature)balance of the area. Over time, a lot of soil has been removed,    3    has caused serious erosion(侵蚀)of the land along the river. In some areas in Shanxi Province, this has destroyed almost all the land,    4    (force)many local farmers to move to other areas.

It is a huge job to control the Yellow River erosion. Usually many people believe the best work    5    (do)by government or international organizations. You may agree to this point of view. If so, it is time for you    6    (think)again.

In fact, it is you that play the most important role    7    stopping the Yellow River erosion. Did you know the    8    (important)of your 5 yuan? For a start, it can buy you a tree, which will help make soil stay on the land. On land with rich soil, local farmers can grow crops to make    9    living, and with the money they earn from    10    (they)crops, farmers can buy goods or services. All of these help to develop local economies.

The strongest sandstorm in recent 10 years     1     (strike) the Chinese capital Beijing on the morning of March the 15th with a visibility (能见度) of less than one kilometer.     2     (lucky) the city's meteorological department (气象部门) had issued     3     yellow warning in advance and connected departments had made full     4    （prepare） for the severe sandstorm, people in affected areas had been reminded to close windows and doors ahead of lime.

Inspite of all the great efforts, this sandstorm still caused great inconvenience to local residents, work and lite. People had to travel to work wearing masks or scarves     5     (prevent) possible damage to their eyes and respiratory tract(呼吸道).Drivers paid     6     (much) attention to road safety than usual due to poor visibility. In response to the dusty weather, Beijing Daxing International Airport took a series of measures, which     7     (affect) a number of flights. Rome wasn't built in a day. Protecting the environment is one of the most important things     9    we human beings stick to forever. After all, only by protecting the environment can we protect     10    (we).

Polar bears live in such environment that is too cold for most animals. For much of the year, they live and hunt on the     1     (freeze) Arctic sea ice. Nature has prepared them for the cold conditions but nothing has prepared them for the danger     2     threatens their only home.

Polar bears’ world is melting. Polar bears     3     (suffer) in a warmer world are in danger. Studies show that the polar ice     4     (reduce) by 9.8% every ten years since 1978. At present, about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears depend on the sea ice for their     5     (survive). “The sea ice is more than just the platform that the bears walk     6    .” says Andrew Derocker, who studies North American polar bear population. “Without it, they can’t exist.”

Some melting and refreezing of the polar ice is nature. But in     7     warmer world, these cycles speed up, and bears have     8     (little) to hunt.     9     (normal), they have three months in the spring when they gain more weight and the extra fat     10     (use)   later, when the bears are not actively hunting. Therefore, it’s urgent to protect the environment and maintain the ecological balance.
