But however we view money, moderate spending is certainly a good idea when we are still too young to get a job. There is a British saying that
2 . Globally, around 14 percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail (零售). Farmers throw away a significant share of their crop due to factors beyond their control, such as produce not meeting supermarket standards for shape or size, unexpected weather patterns changing harvest times and yield as well as a shortage of pickers. These factors and others leave farmers with extra crops on their hands.
Gleaning — collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they haven’t been harvested or commercial use — may contribute to tackling the problem. In Britain, a growing network of volunteer gleaning groups are being welcomed into farmers’ fields to collect tonnes of free produce. The produce would then be given to local food banks, which would otherwise be left to rot after the commercial harvest.
The charity Feedback told The Times that its number of gleaning groups across England had risen from five in 2017 to twenty last year. Feedback’s overall aim is for closer links between farmers and the communities they feed.
Holly Whitelaw, 52, from St Just in Penwith, set up the Cornwall Gleaning Network last year after watching a BBC series that highlighted food poverty in Cornwall. She contacted Feedback which gave her a £2, 000 grant (拨款) to get insurance, knives, and cut-proof gloves. She set up a Facebook page, found willing volunteers and then managed to get a £10, 000 grant from Feeding Britain, a national network of anti-hunger partnerships, to establish seven coordinators across the county and pay for more knives and gloves. They also raised funds to buy a pick-up truck. As a thank you to the farmers, they have begun planting trees to reduce wind speed across their land, preventing damage to crops and minimizing soil erosion.
Gleaning offers an opportunity for environmental win by reducing food waste on the farm. Also, it has a social benefit, as the collected fresh food can be donated to charity organizations and food banks to support those in need.

4 . A third of all food produced worldwide is never eaten. But how easy is it to reduce our food waste? Two students have found out.
“That's not a very pleasant smell,” says student Helen Chigwende, standing with the entire contents of her household food waste bin laid out before her. Helen and one of her house-mates, Will Smith, want to learn how to live a more sustainable(可持续的) lifestyle, so they need to understand their habits. That means searching their leftovers or food that has been sent straight to the bin without being touched. They soon find out how much of their food waste could have been avoided. “We've got a piece of sandwich meat that doesn't even seem to be eaten,” Will says, looking at what sill-eatable food he could save. It is formed into a pile of “avoidable” waste, which soon becomes the “unavoidable” things.
“One of the reasons why we end up with a lot of food waste is that food isn't stored properly,” explained Dr Woolley. Sometimes it is placed in an area of the fridge or cupboard where it is not easily noticeable, so it gets left and not eaten in time. There are also two other tips in reducing food waste. “The first is planning,” he says. “Write a shopping list to make sure you're not repeating things you've already got. The second is preparation. Cook the right amount for the people that are going to eat.”
Back at the student house, Helen and Will are cooking vegetarian food to ensure a sustainable lifestyle. The long term test of whether they can keep up with their dietary prices and reduce food waste is yet to come. But both are devoted to making a positive change now. Despite being a “picky cater”, Helen says a week of sticking to health has not been too diff-cult. “It's just about finding things you'll enjoy eating.”

5 . Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on.The grass is only there to look nice.
Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
It is estimated that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive.Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus.By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out.But fewer people are now using the program.Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019.And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them.Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona.“There might come a point when city restrictions get too severe (苛刻的) for some residents (居民).They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said.“For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”
1. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass?A.To protect the local people. |
B.To beautify the city. |
C.To reduce water usage. |
D.To reduce waste. |
A.Allowing planting grass before new houses. |
B.Encouraging the residents to tear out grass. |

Water is very important to us, without that there would be no life. We couldn’t live if we didn’t have water. Therefore, some people don’t turn the tap off at once after using it. Some people don’t realize they wash them in the shower too long. Some even throw away bottles full in water. As middle school students, we should make great efforts to save water. On one hand, every single person’s save water is significance. On other hand, we can use some water we just used to watering plants. We shouldn’t leave the tap running for while we brush our tooth.
