1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mrs. Johnson was an elderly woman who loved nothing more than sitting by the window and watching the world go by. She had lived in the same house for over 50 years and knew almost everyone in the neighborhood. She especially liked the teenagers who lived next door, a group of kids who always seemed to be up to something.

One day, Mrs. Johnson noticed that the kids seemed to be going through a tough time. They were skipping school, getting into trouble, and seemed lost and directionless. Mrs. Johnson knew that something needed to be done to help these kids, so she decided to take action.

The first thing she did was to invite the kids over for cookies and drinks. They were hesitant at first, but Mrs. Johnson’s warm smile and kind words quickly put them at ease. Over the course of the afternoon, she listened carefully as the kids shared their hopes and dreams, their fears and frustrations. She didn’t judge them or lecture them, but simply offered a listening ea r and a shoulder to lean on.

As the weeks went by, Mrs. Johnson continued to reach out to the kids. She would invite them over for dinner or take them on outings to the park, the library, or the movies. She would encourage them to talk about their interests and talents, and help them find their passions, set goals, and pursue their dreams. Mrs. Johnson became a guiding light for the neighborhood kids.

One of the kids, a boy named David, was particularly talented in music. He had a natural gift for playing the guitar and writing songs, but had never been given the chance to pursue his passion. Mrs. Johnson knew that David’s genius for music was too great to go unnoticed, so she took it upon herself to help David find a way to share his talent with the world.

Michael, a 58-year-old man, lives in one of the most magical places in the world, Honolulu, Hawaii, which is known as an ideal vacation spot for most Americans. He gets to call this place home. But he has difficulty finding a regular place to live in. Being a homeless man, he usually sleeps on the streets and beaches of Honolulu.

Michael has an interest in baseball, so he often takes advantage of the wonderful weather to play baseball. That’s how he earns him the nickname “Baseball Michael”. Many of his friends know where to find him — in the former Heald College parking garage (停车场). There, he practices his skills, in the hope of making it big one day.

Several days ago, when Michael was hitting some baseballs, he lost one in a narrow gap between the parking garage and a drug store next door. He kept on playing. After losing a total of six balls, he decided to go down to get them. The gap was so narrow that he wasn’t sure whether he could squeeze in (挤进去). But realizing those baseballs were his only possessions, he finally made up his mind to have a try.

Michael made his way down the gap, but things turned tricky. He saw it was narrow at the bottom but he thought he was thin enough to enter it. Moments later, he let out an “uh oh”. Beyond his expectation, the space was too small for him to fit. However, he kept going with his eyes on his baseballs. He whispered, “Don’t give up. They are all I have.”

As Michael went down a little lower and lower, he realized that there was no way to return. He had to wait for somebody to rescue him. As he didn’t bring his mobile phone along, he had to shout as loudly as he could. However, there was no one answering him. Half an hour later, he felt extremely thirsty. He was very tired and afraid that he could no longer hold on. Just when he was about to give up, he heard the sound of footsteps was approaching.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There is one incident in my life that makes me want to say thank you to the person involved.

My story happened in June, 1975. It began when my family was finally notified that we had successfully met all the requirements to emigrate (移民) to Canada.

We immediately set about selling our household goods to have enough money to start our life in a new country.

However, our government only allowed us to use a small portion of the money to pay for the flight tickets. The rest was required to be sent directly to a bank account in Canada. The only cash we were allowed to take along with us was $16.

We started our journey. It was the first time my children and I had left our home country, and the first time we had travelled by plane. We were filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Everything was new to us, especially the concept of in-flight entertainment. In our home country, we did not yet have access to televisions, so the thought of watching movies during the flight was thrilling.

However, our excitement quickly turned into disappointment when we realized that headphones were not provided for free. The stewardess informed us that headphones cost $1 for economy class passengers. My children looked at me with longing eyes, asking if they could have a dollar for a set of headphones which they intended to share. Deep down, I knew that we couldn’t afford to spend any of our limited cash on headphones, not even a single set.

Unwillingly, I explained the situation to my children, preparing for their disappointment and understanding that they would have to go without headphones for the duration of the flight. My children accepted it without complaint. But our disappointment must have shown clearly.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

Good Neighbours

After school one winter day, Jack asked his mother to allow him to go out and play in the snow. “Sure, you can. Remember to put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”

“I’m going to need a carrot for the nose,” Jack said. “And I’ll need some things for the snowman’s hat and face.” Jack got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. His mother promised she would watch him build the snowman from the window.

Outside, in his front yard, Jack started with a very small ball of snow. He got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball. At another window, someone else was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbour Naoko. Naoko asked her mother if she could go outside and join Jack in building his snowman. Naoko’s mother agreed and promised to watch her from the window. “You can play until your father comes home,” her mother said.

Naoko ran outside to Jack’s yard and asked if she could help him finish his snowman.

“Yes, please help me,” Jack said. “I have built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman’s head.”

“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Naoko said.

“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.”

Jack picked up some snow and made it into a small snowball. He got on his knees and rolled the snow away from Naoko to make the snowman’s head. Naoko walked back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman.

Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket (桶). He used his mother’s sewing (缝) buttons for the eyes and mouth. Lastly, he added a carrot for the snowman’s nose. Seeing his snowman, Jack was happy when suddenly a terrible thing happened. The head fell off the snowman and crashed to the ground! “Oh, no! My snowman fell apart,” Jack said, “and my father is almost home!”
