文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。主要介绍了罗马的几个价格低廉,安全舒适的旅馆。

1 . Rome can be pricey for travelers, which is why many choose to stay in a hostel (旅社). The hostels in Rome offer a bed in a dorm room for around $25 a night, and for that, you’ll often get to stay in a central location (位置) with security and comfort.

Yellow Hostel

If I had to make just one recommendation for where to stay in Rome, it would be Yellow Hostel. It’s one of the best-rated hostels in the city, and for good reason. It’s affordable, and it’s got a fun atmosphere without being too noisy. As an added bonus, it’s close to the main train station.

Hostel Alessandro Palace

If you love social hostels, this is the best hostel for you in Rome. Hostel Alessandro Palace is fun. Staff members hold plenty of bar events for guests like free shots, bar crawls and karaoke. There’s also an area on the rooftop for hanging out with other travelers during the summer.

Youth Station Hostel

If you’re looking for cleanliness and a modern hostel, look no further than Youth Station. It offers beautiful furnishings and beds. There are plenty of other benefits, too; it doesn’t charge city tax; it has both air conditioning and a heater for the rooms; it also has free Wi-Fi in every room.

Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes

Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes is located just a 10-minute walk from the central city station and it’s close to all of the city’s main attractions. The staff is friendly and helpful, providing you with a map of the city when you arrive, and offering advice if you require some. However, you need to pay 2 euros a day for Wi-Fi.

文章大意:本是一篇说明文。主要介绍了写日记带来的种种好处。

2 . For many of us, work diaries are practical things. We use them to make notes of appointments or meetings, writing words next to dates to remind us of what we need to do later. But journaling is also about feelings. It’s a personal diary, often kept far from prying eyes, sometimes containing our secrets and desires.    1

It can be difficult to say exactly what we’re feeling due to anxiety or frustration. For some of us, putting pen to paper and taking down our thoughts is much easier than saying them.     2    It can also be relieving to make sense of something which is stressing us out, annoying us or getting us down.

Writing about what is on our minds can help us to be more mindful. It is also good for mental health overall.    3    Maybe our thoughts could be best represented by a drawing.

Another thing to consider is that our memories fade over time.     4    Logging what’s happening in our lives currently could help bring back memories when we read our diary entries again years from now, or could act as an insight into our past-selves. We can see our progress, or be reminded of exciting times in our lives. The person who was once annoying may have become a close friend, or something that was once scary may now seem funny.

5     If something exciting happens, writing about it may help us to remember that wonderful time!

A.And journaling isn’t just limited to words.
B.Journaling is not a record of only happy moments.
C.But what are the benefits of writing down our feelings?
D.It’s about allowing ourselves to learn from our mistakes.
E.So, when something is on our minds, we should put it down on paper.
F.What is clear on our minds today may be forgotten a few years down the line.
G.Not just that, but writing things down can help us understand our ideas, emotions and feelings.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了通过自我同情的练习,我们可以学会用善意和无条件的爱来对待自己。

3 . Do you think you need to shout at yourself to force yourself to finish your homework? If so, think again.    1     Research shows that practicing self-compassion (自我关怀) improves our mental and physical well-being and supports long-term success.

Self-compassion is the practice of being kind and supportive to ourselves. The opposite is being self-critical and mean to ourselves when we make a mistake.     2     These negative responses are related to depression, stress and reduced quality of life.

A 2017 study found people who practice self-compassion tend to handle stress better. Their bodies have less of a stress response when, for example, they meet with difficulties at work or school.     3     Let’s say they do poorly on a geometry test. Self-compassion helps them use the experience to make changes going forward, like seeking out a math tutor.

4     We can start with mindfulness. First of all, practice observing our thoughts — are they understanding or critical? Don’t judge ourselves too severely then. Rather than getting caught up in how we could have done better, forgive ourselves and think about what to change while remaining respectful, and loving to ourselves.     5     We can read a novel, play a musical instrument or kick around a soccer ball with friends.

With practice, we can learn to treat ourselves with kindness and unconditional love — not tough love.

A.So how do we develop self-compassion?
B.It may be more effective to be kind to yourself.
C.It includes letting go of your strict self-criticism.
D.Mindfulness is the key to practicing self-compassion.
E.But this approach does not make us feel or perform better.
F.They have more confidence to look for areas where they can improve.
G.Also, show ourselves kindness in ways that nourish (滋养) our spirit and body.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了四种针对特殊人群的发明设计。

10 . The Curb-cut Effect (路缘坡效应) refers to the fact that supporting small groups of people often ends up helping much larger ranges of society.

Curb cuts: Easing the walking

In the 1940s, hundreds of thousands of World War Ⅱ soldiers returned home with disabilities. Disappointed by the difficulties they faced, Jack Fisher of Kalamazoo, Michigan, as one of them, asked his city government to build an experimental curb cut-a gentle slope that brings the end of a sidewalk down to meet the level of the street-at the corners of several blocks downtown. A few months later, Fisher reported that even residents without wheelchairs were enjoying the impact of the little slopes.

Reading machines: Getting the message

In 1976, technologist Ray Kurzweil invented a machine for the blind and visually damaged to change images into text that it then read aloud. Smart speakers with those voices are now in roughly one-quarter of US homes. By detecting street signs and house numbers, it is helping build the maps that self-driving cars use to navigate the world.

Closed captions (字幕): Following the conversation

Sears launched the first TV with a built-in equipment that allowed deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to read along with their favorite programs in 1980. In the 1990s, text became increasingly common as DVDs and, later, streaming services added the ability to switch the words on at will. A 2006 survey found that only around 20 percent of the people using captions had hearing problems.

DeafSpace designs: Keeping things quiet

More than 150 designs of the DeafSpace Project came from architect Hansel Bauman. One aim is to clear distracting noises, which can make it difficult for people to use their limited hearing abilities. By keeping conversations and other sound disturbances from walking and jumping around the room, these ways also make it easier for all sorts of students and workers to focus.
