5 . A girl is smiling at me from a picture on my desk. She is one of my sponsor (资助) children. I didn’t spend much money helping her. The joy from helping her gives me, however, is over the picture.
I can still remember the first time that I decided to help a child. It was many years ago, I was only a middle school student. I had a little extra (额外的) money each month. I didn’t feel like buying anything, though. A few years ago, we lost everything in a house fire. That fire bought me a lot. I cleared that I didn’t need a lot of things to be happy. From then on I began to care about the suffering of children in poor countries. With my mom’s help, I soon found a few groups and joined them. They were helping others around the world.
It felt so good being able to reach out and help others in need. It felt so good being able to make even one life better. I could feel the love growing in my head and beginning to change me. This feeling makes us into better people with bigger hearts. It helps us to love, to be kind, and to make this world a better place.

6 . A great earthquake happened in southwestern China on May 12,2008, killing thousands of people. The quake struck Wenchuan and other parts of Sichuan Province in the middle of the afternoon and a number of school buildings, shops and homes were destroyed. The number of the dead and missing rose as rescue workers dug through flattened (夷为平地的) schools and homes to find survivors. It was reported that many people were still buried under the ruins in and around Mianyang, a city about 60 miles east of the epicenter (震中). People there spent a second night sleeping outside in the rain. The government ordered people not to return to their homes for safety concerns. Few lights were on in the city, and people ate and chatted by candlelight.
Rescue teams brought people to Mianyang's stadium for food and shelter. Outside the railway station, the police shouted in megaphones (扩音器) telling people where they could get free food. Buses carrying survivors left Beichuan, which is in the northeast of the epicenter and was also flattened by the quake. 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing at a fallen high school in Beichuan County. At another school in the town of Juyuan, 900 students were buried under the ruins. There was little hope that many survivors would be found under the rubble. But officials asked the people not to give up hope. 20,000 soldiers arrived in the disaster area on the way by plane, train and truck and even on foot.
Thirty-one British tourists who were panda-watching in Wolong National Nature Reserve were safe. And the pandas were reported safe, too.

7 . Four Different Job Divisions in the Advertising Field
New Business
What it does: The new business department is like a sales department. The people in the department play an important role in the organization. Not only are the staff key to keeping the organization financially viable, they also understand that the clients (客户) they deal with become a reflection of the organization.
Required degree: a bachelor’s degree, and for high-level positions, perhaps a master s degree.
Common job titles: sales representative, new business manager, business development manager.
Account Services
What it does: Once the people in the new business department land a new client, it’s up to the people in the account services department to work with the client on a day-to-day basis. Account representatives serve as liaisons (联络人), answering client questions, providing updates and reports and responding to emergencies.
Required degree: a bachelor’s degree.
Common job titles: account executive, account manager, account supervisor, account director.
Planning
What it does: Market research is the backbone of any advertising campaign for companies that sell any type of product or service. People in this field do everything from conducting market research to using their research skills to develop business strategies (策略).
Required degree: a master’s degree.
Common job titles: market analyst, planning manager, research associate, research manager, brand strategist.
Creative
What it does: When outsiders look into the field of advertising, it’s often a creative advertising position that they see. These artists are responsible for listening carefully to a client’ s preferences, taking the research their team has unearthed and then crafting a campaign that goes beyond the traditional advertising mediums (newspapers, magazines, radio and TV) and plays well on today’s digital channels. Their skills must be nothing short of inspiring.

8 . Modern life brings us many things to worry about, and you may come across a friend or two reminding everyone to “just breathe”. But can just breathing really make a difference?
“The rate and depth we breathe at has a huge effect on our mental state,” says Elissa Epel, a professor from San Francisco. Researchers like Epel are exploring how breathing can help people reduce anxiety and they find that breathing could be an overlooked key to finding more calm and peace.
In a 2017 study, highly anxious people were asked to take a breath course and to practise twice a day at home. After eight weeks, they reported feeling less anxious compared to a group that didn’t receive the training. They also showed physical signs of reduced anxiety, including lower heart rate.
A regular breathing practice might help you feel calmer in your everyday life. But other studies suggest that focusing on your breathing in moments of acute stress could also be useful.
In an older study, researchers told participants that they were going to receive electric shocks, which actually never happened. Some of them practised breathing slowly before the shocks, while others focused on breathing at a normal rate or didn’t regulate their breathing at all. The slow breathers not only reported feeling less anxious while expecting the pain, but also showed lower anxiety on a physical level, as measured by sweat and blood flow to the fingers.
Another study following the study above tested three different breathing styles: fast inhaling (吸入) with slow exhaling; slow inhaling with fast exhaling; or evenly paced inhaling and exhaling. Here, the fast inhaling with slow exhaling (2 seconds in, 8 seconds out) was the most effective at relieving both the physical and mental anxiety.
All these studies show how much influence our body has on our mind. If the way we’ re breathing is signaling to our brains that something is wrong, it’s no wonder we feel anxious.
