We were headed to the nationally famous Blue Owl Restaurant, in historic Kimmswick, Missouri, to celebrate my husband’s birthday. It is said that the restaurant is warm and romantic with smiling waitresses dressed in long blue dresses with white aprons. The food was delicious, and the service was extremely good. This week, the restaurant offers a sweetheart dinner that is well worth the price. So we decided to have a try.

There would be freezing rain today, but it might be around midnight. We would be safely home by then. But then, as we were near the restaurant, it suddenly started raining heavily. We were closer to the restaurant than home so it seemed wise to go to the restaurant.

By the time we arrived, the street in front of the restaurant was a sheet of ice. The parking lot was also a sheet of ice and in front of our car was a pool of water. I couldn’t pull in the parking lot and I knew, even if I parked on the street, we would never be able to get out and walk in the rain.

My husband couldn’t walk steadily (稳步地) and I was not strong enough to help him to cross the street. I was afraid we would fall, so we were planning to give up the meal in the fancy restaurant. But we really wanted to try the special chocolate- covered strawberries that were as large as baseballs. Also, we wanted to take pictures of the two of us.

At that moment, an unknown lady walked toward us.

To our surprise, the lady, who just helped us, was the owner of the restaurant.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了作者和祖父钓鱼的经历,侧面讲述了作者的父亲夜以继日为改善河流环境而工作,最终带领团队创造奇迹的故事。

6 . In school we learned about the Earth. We learned that rivers flow from higher ground to lower ground. They usually end at a bigger river or go into a lake or ocean. I can see that every day in Chicago.

Our river goes into the lake. It’s a giant lake. We used to go fishing on the river every summer. Most days you would find me and my grandfather there, fishing. My father was busy working for the city. I did not know what his job was. He said it was in the Sanitary and Ship Canal.

My grandfather would take me to the river. “In the old days,” he said, “this was a clean stream. Now look at it. It is dirty.” Sometimes we even saw dead fish floating on it.

When we brought the fish home, my mother would throw them out. “We can’t eat this. This is dirty, bad fish.” She sounded angry. So my grandfather and I stopped bringing the fish home. Sometimes we would go to fish and throw them back. But mostly we just stayed at home. We were sad about it.

Then one day my father was so busy that he was not at home. That New Year’s Day he worked, too. My mother was worried, “It is too cold.” But he went anyway.

Then two days later the newspaper said, “It is a miracle!” That was the headline. I read the article. It told how the workers on the Sanitary and Ship Canal had done something impossible. They had changed the Chicago River completely. They dug such a great hole that the river rushed away from the lake. It now went to the west. I was excited. So was my grandfather. He said, “Now we can go fishing this summer.”

We both laughed. So did my mother. My father smiled a lot, all day long.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。吃太多的垃圾食品会对人的身体造成损害,尤其是对青少年,运动可以帮助我们对抗垃圾食品。文章对此进行了介绍。

10 . It’s hard to turn down hamburgers, french fries, potato chips and all of the other junk food that seem to call out to us. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you’re a teenager.

“Junk food shapes teenager’s brains in ways that damage their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control bad behaviors,” said Amy Reichelt, a brain and nutrition specialist at Western University, Canada. “It may even up a teen’s possibility of depression and anxiety.”

Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies, including their own, about how poor food choices can impact teen’s brains. They found teens are more sensitive (敏感的) than any other age group to processed foods with a lot of fat and sugar as their brains are not yet fully formed.

Teenagers’ brains are still developing the ability to assess bad possibilities and control actions. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that tells us we shouldn’t eat chips all the time and helps us resist ( 抵 制 ) that urge. However, this region is the last to mature (成熟) — it doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s.

So, what’s the best way to say no to junk food? Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food reminder. Exercise also causes the body to make a protein that helps brain cells grow and strengthens connections between the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions. The prefrontal cortex thus can work better to help us make wise decisions and control our impulses.

1. According to the text, junk food does the greatest harm to         .
A.PreschoolersB.TeenagersC.The middle-agedD.The elderly
2. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Junk food.B.The brain.C.The research.D.The ability.
3. What can be inferred from the text?
A.Processed foods shouldn’t be allowed to produce.
B.Teenagers don’t understand the harm of junk food.
C.The prefrontal cortex can help us make wise decisions.
D.The prefrontal cortex develops fully in our late 20s.
4. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Where do our impulses come from?
B.Why should we fight against junk food?
C.What is the best way to strengthen our body?
D.How does exercise work against junk food?
