3 . A man may usually be known by the books he reads es well as by the company he keeps.     1

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change.    2     It does not turn its back upon us in need. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

People often discover their common characteristics by the mutual love for a book. As an old proverb goes, “Love me, love my book.”    3     People can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.

Books are by far the most lasting products of human efforts. Temples and statues may fall into ruin, but books will survive.    4     They are fresh forever. The only effect of time is to reject the bad products, for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.

5     They bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive. We sympathize with them, enjoy with them, sorrow with them, Their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in the scenes which they describe.

The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.

No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.

I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.

I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home. I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew... until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way

I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away —as if punishing myself could undo things.

“I would tell everything to Grandpa,” a voice inside me said.

“I was wrong.” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I live with my husband in San Luis Obispo, California, about three miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while they’re migrating. November 2020 was one of those times, so we took out our yellow double kayak(皮艇)to watch the wildlife. We paddled out the length of the pier(码头)and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. We were in awe watching these graceful giants—each one about 50 feet long—breach and spray through their blowholes. We laughed when they turned their side fins so that it looked as if they were waving at us.

At the time, my friend Liz was staying with us. The next day, I asked her if she wanted to go out on the water to see them.

“No way,” said Liz, now 65. She was not an experienced kayaker and was terrified that the kayak would overturn while we were surrounded by hungry whales. “There’s nothing to worry about,” I assured her. “The craft is stable, and we can turn back anytime. I’ve learned somewhere that whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats. Anything they can`t swallow they spit right out.” After some cajoling(劝诱), she finally agreed to join me. I didn’t want her to miss this magnificent experience and regret it later.

Liz and I got out on the water at 8:30 the following morning. There were already about 15 other kayakers and paddleboarders in the bay. It was warm for November, so we wore T-shirts and leggings. After a half-hour, we had our first whale sighting just past the pier: two humpbacks swimming toward us. How amazing to be that close to a creature that size, I thought as the whales dipped under the waterline.

When whales go down after breaching, they leave what looks like an oil slick on the water. I figured if we paddled toward that spot, we’d be safe from the whales, since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I thought was a distance. I later found out that it’s recommended to keep 300 feet away. We were more like 60 feet away.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了牛津英语词典因韩国文化在世界范围内流行而收录了各类韩国单词,解释了那些韩国单词的意思。

8 . The Korean culture wave has swept through the editorial offices of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), which has added more than 20 new words of Korean origin to its latest edition.

The new words include hallyu, the Korean original for the wave of pop culture that has made BTS one of the world’s most popular bands and Squid Game the Netflix sensation of 2021. The dictionary defines it as the increase in international interest in South Korea and its popular culture, esp. as represented by the global success of South Korean music, film, television, fashion, and food.

But as the dictionary’s new additions make clear, there is much more to Korean cuisine than its spicy staple kimchi, which appeared in the OED as long ago as 1976. New food-related entries include bulgogi, thin slices of beef or pork, and chimaek, Korean-style fried chicken and beer.

Traditional culture is represented by hanbok, formal costumes worn by both men and women, and Hangul, the Korean alphabet (字母表) created by King Sejong in 1443.

Aegyo, a certain kind of cuteness or charm considered characteristically Korean, and similar to the Japanese word kawaii, has been included as both a noun and adjective. There is room, too, for mukbang, or livestreams of people eating extraordinary amounts of food while talking to the online audience.

The inclusion of “skinship” is more surprising. Commonly used in South Korea, where it is translated as seukinsip, and in Japan (sukinshippu), it captures the emotional bond that comes from close physical contact between a parent and child, lovers and friends, the dictionary said.

“The adoption and development of these Korean words in English demonstrate how lexical (词汇的) innovation is no longer restricted to the traditional centres of English in the United Kingdom and the United States,” the OED said.“They show how Asians in different parts of the continent invent and exchange words within their own local contexts, then introduce these words to the rest of the English-speaking world, thus allowing the Korean wave to continue to ripple on the sea of English words.”

1. Why does the OED’s latest edition include new Korean words?
A.The Korean culture is gaining global influence.
B.The previous edition of the OED is out of fashion.
C.The OED wants to advertise Korean pop products.
D.The old additions have given way to the new ones.
2. Which of the following can be used to describe a lovely Korean girl?
A.Aegyo.B.Hanbok.
C.Bulgogi.D.Mukbang.
3. What does the underlined word “captures” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Transforms.B.Ruins.
C.Establishes.D.Represents.
4. What can we infer from the OED’s words?
A.Korean dominates the Asian cultures.
B.Innovative words are limited to English.
C.The Korean wave will impact more on English.
D.Korean and English words are interchangeable.

文章大意:本文是议论文,文章主要讲述了作者念错学生名字时,学生懒得纠正老师的错误。少数种族和文化群体往往试图通过在简历上隐藏种族暗示,包括更改姓名,来避免麻烦。

9 . I remember when Kamala Harris became Joe Biden’s running mate, it seemed funny how many people pronounced her name incorrectly. On one occasion, a news host became upset when being corrected, and purposely called her Kumbaya.

I am no stranger to this issue as many of my students are from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and sometimes their names are difficult for me to pronounce, even after asking them how to say it. Many students seem unwilling to correct me when I attempt to learn their names correctly. The other thing I’ve seen in growing numbers is students “adopting” an English name. It’s much more common than many think, for people to change their names in order to fit in.

This is especially the case when it comes to seeking jobs. Racial and cultural minorities often attempt to avoid discrimination hiring by hiding racial cues on the resume including changing their name. This is referred to as “resume whitening”. Research shows almost 50 percent of black and Asian job applicants did so.

Xian Zhao from the University of Toronto researches ethnic name pronunciation, saying that many people don’t understand that habitually pronouncing an unfamiliar name inaccurately is a form of indirect discrimination. It sends a message that “you are the minorities” says Zhao. “You are not important in this environment, so why should I take time and my effort to learn it?” On the other end, those with ethnic names frequently don’t correct people, even when their names are pronounced wrong repeatedly, feeling it is better just to keep the peace and not stand out for their names are difficult.

It is important to try to pronounce everyone’s name as they pronounce it. This communicates respect of them as a person and their culture. There is nothing wrong with asking someone to repeat their name so that you can learn to pronounce it properly. This is usually appreciated.

1. How do the author’s Asian students respond when their names are incorrectly pronounced?
A.They attempt to laugh at it.B.They tend to accept it.
C.They offer to correct the author.D.They agree to change their names.
2. Which of the following can be seen as “resume whitening”?
A.A change in work environment.
B.A ban on racial discrimination in workplace.
C.A practice of using Western names in job seeking.
D.A boast about one’s educational background in the resume.
3. What can we infer from Xian Zhao’s research?
A.Ethnics accept their names being mispronounced to save trouble.
B.Ethnics fight effectively with the discrimination against their names.
C.Many westerners pronounce ethnic names incorrectly on purpose.
D.Many westerners make efforts to pronounce ethnic names correctly.
4. What’s the author’s attitude toward pronouncing ethnic names correctly?
A.Critical.B.Uncaring.C.Supportive.D.Ambiguous.
