文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章讲述了科学家研究发现,我们在有压力和精神挫折时工作,会让我们感觉身体更加地疲惫。

1 . Do you ever notice how stress and mental frustration can affect your physical abilities? When you are worried about something at work, do you find yourself more tired at the end of the day? This phenomenon is a result of the activation of a specific area of the brain when we attempt to participate in both physical tasks and mental tasks simultaneously.

Ranjana Mehta, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health, carried out a study examining the relationship between physical and mental tiredness and brain behavior. The study showed that if we attempt mental tasks while doing physical tasks, we activate specific areas, called the prefrontal cortex (PFC) (前额皮质), in our brain.

This can cause our bodies to become tired much sooner than if we were only participating in a physical task. The brain is just like any other biological tissue (组织), because it can be overused and can suffer from tiredness.

“Existing examinations of physical and mental tiredness have been used to study muscular and biomechanical (生物力学的) changes,” said Mehta. “The purpose of this study was to examine the influence on the PFC while we compare the changes in brain behavior with traditional measures of tiredness.”

According to Mehta, study findings show that there were lower blood oxygen levels in the PFC following combined physical and mental tiredness compared to that of just physical tiredness conditions. Through simultaneous examination of the brain and muscle function it is obvious that when we participant in highly cognitive tasks, brain resources are divided which may speed up the development of physical tiredness.

It is critical that researchers consider the brain as well as the body when examining tiredness development and its influence on the body. This can provide us with a total understanding of what is happening to the body when we perform our daily activities. “Not a lot of people see the value in looking at both the brain and the body together,” said Mehta. “However, no one does purely physical or mental work; they always do both.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。讲述了一名叫做蕾妮布茨的小女孩,在父亲的影响下而成为一名消防员的故事。
3 . 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.

Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.

When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.

I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.

We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.

1. What’s Renee’s job in the Carmel Fire Department? (No more than 5 words)
2. What makes Renee balance between doing housework and working so much? (No more than 5 words)

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章通过陈述中国爱惜粮食、节俭的传统美德以及目前浪费食物的现状,并号召我们珍惜粮食、养成节俭的习惯。

4 . It is an ancient Chinese tradition to cherish grain. In ancient China, farming promoted the development of civilization so people regarded grain as a God. The ancient people firmly believed that “food is the most important thing for the people”. The earth God “She” and the grain God “Ji” were the earliest gods worshipped by our ancestors and the country was called “Sheji”.

Chinese believe in food conservation. Scholars have strongly advocated that “every single grain is fruit of hard work” and nothing should be wasted. Strong daily practices are associated with “respecting” the grain. Families that run out of rice never leave their container completely empty. There is always a little rice left in it. Parts of the poultry (家禽) and livestock that are unsuitable to be the main dishes are always deliciously cooked.

Food also helps bring people together. In Chinese culture, “Ju” (get together)is a very particular word. There are many ways to get together, but the word “Can” is usually added to it in case of festivals, birthday celebrations, moving to new houses, weddings and funeral. “Ju Can”(get together and have dinner)is an important way for Chinese families to bond.

But these ordinarily frugal (节俭的) people often end up wasting food during “Ju Can”. Some reports show that the annual waste of grain in China is close to 6% of the total grain output, of which, the waste rate of a large party is as high as 38%. The food waste is driven by people’s flamboyant nature-they think the plates must be full and taking away packed food from a party is “disgraceful”. The dishes at a dinner party have become a symbol of a person’s wealth and having too many dishes at the menu has become fashionable, thus promoting waste.

Small to a person, a family, big to a country, the whole human race, to survive, to develop, we have to be frugal. Being frugal does not mean being mean, it simply means one is wise enough not to waste food. If the culture of diligence and frugality is more widespread in all countries, it would provide for a stronger foundation for national security and family happiness.

1. Why does the author mention “Sheji” in Paragraph 1?
A.To prove China enjoys a long history.

D.To clarify who is the earliest god in China.

3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The disgraceful behaviour in “Ju Can”.
B.The human nature revealed in food waste.
C.How much food Chinese people waste in “Ju Can”.
D.The food waste in “Ju Can” and the reason behind it.
4. The underlined word “flamboyant” in Paragraph 4 can be understood as             .
A.showyB.generousC.uniqueD.hardworking
5. What does the author most likely want to tell us?
A.Farming is crucial to China’s development.
B.Food plays a vital role in bringing people together.
C.We should cherish food and form the habit of frugality.
D.We mustn’t leave the container completely empty in case of tunning out of food.
