文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了工作场所可能是“桌怒症”(Misergonia)的完美滋生地。这是一种由一系列噪音和紊乱引起的病症。

1 . The workplace can be a perfect breeding-ground for “Misergonia”,also called desk rage (愤怒). It's a condition in which a series of noises and disorders cause people distress.

Sounds are often the trigger for Misergonia. The routine fire-alarm test is a case in point.“Attention please, attention please,” shouts a voice that is impossible to ignore.    1    For example, every office has its share of keyboard thumpers-people whose goal seems to be not producing a document but destroying the equipment.

2    “This is a point that has already been made,” is how weirdly large numbers of people start to make a point. Why not just say "I don't value your time?"

Small IT failures are a fact of office life, but they can still be soul-destroying. The printer just doesn’t work.    3    Your cursor(光标)is just there, but when you move your mouse towards it, nothing happens.“Either your cursor is in a coma or the battery has run out,” offers up a colleague helpfully. Someone else fills the gap.“This is a point that has already been made.”they begin.

4    It starts innocently enough, with someone asking for help with a problem. In come one or two replies, and then suddenly, a shower, as if nothing else mattered other than answering this one question. There are replies to replies, and replies to replies to replies. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves hugely, but there is always a silent, suffering group.

Individual workers have their own triggers. There is no cure for Misergonia. The workplace is a collection of people keeping in touch in different ways. Their habits and noises turn into something familiar for some colleagues but annoying for others.    5

A.You'd better ask them for help.
B.And then there is the reply-all email.
C.Other noises are not so loud but just as annoying.
D.Or the mouse that gives up at just the wrong moment.
E.Nowadays, the computer has become an essential tool.
F.The only release is to try to be understanding and get used to it.
G.Verbal phrases(口头禅)are another headache for Misergonia sufferers.

The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.

Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”

The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.

After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.

After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery. Their wrestling coach, Jim Zeigler, arrived at the hospital along with the rest of the team to offer support.

For my fourteenth birthday, my mom offered to take me and several friends to the city nearest our small town to visit a mall, go shopping, eat pizza and then watch a movie. All the friends I’d invited showed up except Nora. I felt confused and angry.

So, as soon as I returned to my house, I gave her a call. “It’s my birthday! You’re not coming, and you didn’t even let me know. What kind of friend are you? How could you do this to me?”

Then Nora explained she had to stay at home because she had gotten sick. “OK, so you’re sick... But how was I supposed to know if you didn’t tell me?” I answered. It only grew worse from there, and Nora cried as we hung up the phone moments later. Immediately, her mother called back. Angrily, she told me how much I’d hurt her daughter, how much Nora had wanted to join us, and that she had been the one to change Nora’s plan. Still thinking only of myself, I ended the call with Nora’s mom and still felt angry.

At school on Monday, I found it easy to avoid Nora since she and I had no classes together. For the rest of the school year, we hardly spoke.

The next year I entered a senior high school, with twice as many students as my junior high school. I made some new friends and kept some old ones. But my friendship with Nora had been in the past.

Years later-just over twenty, to be specific-I discovered Facebook had suggested Nora as an online friend. We’d attended the same school and had many Facebook friends in common; it made sense. So, I reached out and sent the friend request. Nora accepted.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍美国大峡谷的一些鲜为人知的真相。

5 . Despite being one of the most famous and frequented attractions in the United States,     1    . Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.

We don’t really know how old it is

It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago,     2    . It suggests that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently.

    3    .

Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool—no word-play intended. Sudden changes in altitude have an enormous impact on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you are experiencing could differ dramatically, depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the region is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.

There are lots of fossils in the area

While the dinosaur might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found.     4    . They vary from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.

Fish are relatively uncommon in the area

Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy mud with small rocks, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. Consequently, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon,     5    .

A.but a 2012 study contained a real shocker
B.and many other species are found outside this area.
C.and six of them are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
D.The weather in the Grand Canyon is really cool.
E.This indicates that other creatures frequented the location.
F.The Grand Canyon creates its own weather.
G.Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises.

Shoveling the snow had always been the best part about winter. Not that I thought it was fun, but my dad’s reaction to a clean driveway kept me going. He hated shoveling snow more than anything. So, I took it upon myself at eight years old to do it for him. Every time I saw snow fall from the sky, I knew the universe was ready to put me to work.

I would run and put on my jacket, snow boots to prepare myself for the work ahead. But every single time, before I went outside, I would stop by my older sister’s room to see if she wanted to help me. I knew she would say no, but I always asked anyway.

One day there was a lot of snow, and there was no way I would be able to clean it all up myself. It was getting dark, and I hated the thought of my dad having to shovel the snow after a long day of work. So I did the routine and knocked on my sister’s door. As I expected, she gave me the same old “no”. Annoyed, I asked again. Without saying anything further, she got up, pushed me out of the room and slammed (平地关上) the door in my face.

I stood there silently for a second. Then, I turned around, went out of the house, and set out in the cold to tackle the enemy that lay in my driveway. But I couldn’t calm down. I was really angry that she would leave me to battle this alone. All I wanted was some help. The more I remembered every “no” she had ever said to me, the angrier I became.

I fought tirelessly, my short arms swinging from side to side while the wind cut against my cheeks. After one long hour, I was not even halfway done. Looking at the victorious snow, I thought of Dad’s disappointment.
