One of the biggest decisions college students make is what subject to major in. This post-high-school decision will help undergraduates to     1     themselves to an area of study, determining the courses they'll take and setting them on a path toward their careers. Let's take a(n)     2     to step into their shoes and kick around some options, like communications, computer science, playing the bagpipes (风笛).

Playing the bagpipes? In fact, that's one of several…well…unusual majors available to college students today.

Believe it or not, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, offers a bachelor of fine arts degree in bagpipe performance. Not     3    , it's the only program of its kind in the U.S. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this lively woodwind     4     , bagpipes are most often heard in Scotland and Ireland, in American parades and special ceremonies, in music practice rooms at Carnegie Mellon (obviously), and     5    anywhere else. So there's probably a scarcity of full-time jobs awaiting a newly graduated bagpiper, which makes this major one of the most unusual offerings in U.S. college catalogs.

If you're looking for a major that's truly outside the box—or literally about the box—how about a bachelor of science in packaging at Michigan State University? The     6     areas of study in this multidisciplinary program include packaging materials (glass, plastic, paper, and metals), packaging processes and systems, design and environmental impact and     7    . With all that knowledge, packaging majors may have their future career all wrapped up and "in the bag" by graduation day.

Are you more the outdoor action-adventure type? Then get out your hiking boots for a bachelor of science degree in adventure education at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. This too-cool-to-be-true program teaches you how to use the great outdoors to     8     children and adults to adventures that promote self-discovery, personal growth, and a fabulous time. And that means wilderness expeditions, whitewater kayaking, and rock climbing among the natural wonders of the Granite State. Talk about great school field trips!

If none of these options     9     to you but you still want to study something offbeat, don't you worry. There are plenty of other programs to choose from: puppet arts, citrus, comedy,     10    park design, turfgrass science, nautical archaeology, bakery science, and floral management, to name just a few. And if you're finding it hard to make up your mind, then you might want to consider working toward a PhD in decision sciences at Indiana University. This program will teach you how to apply research, data, and analytical tools to make informed business decisions. And it might even help you decide what to minor in.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了美国航空航天局“人类计算机”凯瑟琳·约翰逊的成就。
6 . Directions: After reading the passages below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

Katherine Johnson has never had a hit song or given an Oscar-winning performance, nor has she been an Olympic athlete or a fashion icon. Instead, Johnson’s greatness comes from her work as a math expert.

Math directly impacts all our lives,     1     we’re aware of it or not. Johnson’s math, too, directly affects your life, in the legacy of her work for NASA — the U.S. space agency — which she performed from the 1950s until the 1980s.     2    NASA’s space program, which her calculations helped advance, we wouldn’t have the technology necessary for things like satellite TV, sophisticated meteorology, and small computers (like laptops and iPhones). So     3     Johnson may never be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you could say she’s quite a hero.

You may be familiar with Johnson’s name and work if you’ve seen the 2016 movie Hidden Figures, which tells the story of Johnson and two other African American women who worked behind the scenes at NASA as “human computers.” They did things like     4    (calculate) orbital trajectories — vital work when you’re preparing to send people into space. Remarkably, they did this work at a time     5     women and minorities were often dissuaded from pursuing high-level jobs.

To get a job as a “human computer,” of course, Johnson had to be extremely proficient at math — and she was.     6    (bear) in West Virginia in 1918, Johnson was a prodigy who skipped several grades in school. After graduating from college with high honors and a degree in mathematics, she began teaching at a public school. In 1953, after hearing that jobs for African American women with math and science backgrounds were available at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, which later became part of NASA), Johnson applied and     7     (offer) a position.

Johnson worked on numerous space missions, and by 1962, she     8    (earn) a reputation for the accuracy of her calculations. That year, NASA was preparing for Friendship 7, a mission that would put astronaut John Glenn into orbit around Earth. NASA had programmed computers with the necessary equations to calculate the trajectory of Glenn’s space capsule.     9     has ever used a computer knows how fast and accurate they are, but Glenn wondered what would happen if the computers broke down or malfunctioned.     10    (guard) against this, he requested a human computer — specifically, Katherine Johnson — to run the equations that had been programmed into the computers.

“If she says they’re good,” Johnson later remembered Glenn saying, “then I’m ready to go.” Johnson did the equations, and the mission was a success.
