The new year was coming and my family began to make this year’s plan for it. “The weather report says this unseasonably warm weather will continue through the week. We could shake things up and celebrate the new year with a picnic party in the backyard!” said my mum.
“Our San Francisco weather can be pretty unpredictable,” said my dad. “Maybe we should come up with a sensible indoor plan.” Then he continued, “Hey! Why not start this year with something different? ”
“Yeah!” my little brother, Tex, agreed.
“It’ll be a great!” said Mom. Then she turned to my cousin, Mareya, who was staying with me, “Mareya, we’d love to have you and your family join us. And how about we invite Ollie and Grandma? ”
We all cheered. And after the fastest kitchen cleanup in history, Mareya and I raced over to Ollie’s. Grandma was also excited and suggested we get out the instruments and make a little music.
Grandma’s music suggestion got us thinking. Ollie, Mareya, and I made up a simple song, and somehow, it turned into an idea for a play! Later that afternoon, we went back to my house to find out the costume box. Naturally, my little brother and sister joined right in.
We made up a play, in which the forest animals threw a party to celebrate the arrival of the New Year Queen. Fast-forward to New Year’s Day when we worked all morning to set up our backyard stage. We prepared some flowers and a basket of pine nuts (松子) to greet the Queen when she stepped on the stage.
Unfortunately, the weather that morning was so windy and cold that we all felt freezing. Mum suggested us giving the performance indoors. But we insisted on showing the play outside, as we had all set up for it in the yard. Mum then said that we could start with the play outside, and then had the food inside. Everyone agreed.
Once our audience were seated, Ollie opened the show. When we were half way through the performance, right in the middle of our song-and-dance scene, a strong wind blew! Suddenly, there was a mess as everybody hurried to pick things up. But afterward, the air was calm again.

5 . Located at the western end of the Himalayas and the northern tip of Pakistan, the region of Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the world’s most inaccessible natural places. It also has “an extraordinarily rich cultural landscape”, says Sam Dalrymple in Condé Nast Traveller, having often resisted conquest (征服) by neighbouring empires, while absorbing their influence over the thousands of years along with the other benefits of Silk Road trade. Known to ancient Chinese geographers as the Xizang of the Apricots, it is a splendid land of snow leopards and brown bears. It is dotted with old palaces and ancient temples. It has often been closed to outsiders in recent decades, but it is now open to visitors once more.
Many locals claim that their inclusive and open society of this region inspired the lost city of Shangri-La in James Hilton’s popular 1933 novel Lost Horizon. The district of Hunza, for instance, is the best in education in Pakistan, with a relatively high level of women’s empowerment. Indeed an all-female team of woodworkers and designers helped restore the Serena Altit Fort Residence, a 1, 000-year-old building that is one of three beautiful palace hotels that belong to the Serena group in Gilgit-Baltistan. It overlooks the old walled city of Karimabad, Hunza’s capital, in a beautiful valley where the fresh air is combined with the flavor of jasmine blossom (茉莉花) and most new houses are still built in the traditional, wooden-framed style.
Driving southwards past the city of Gilgit, you entered into the Indus Gorge and the green valleys give way to an “dry moonscape”. To the east lies Baltistan, a rough region where there are few smooth roads and an ancient language of Tibetan is spoken and yak (牦牛) meat is widely served. It is here that Serena’s other two palace hotels are to be found, in Khaplu and Shigar, not far from K2, the world’s second-highest peak.

6 . Britain’s longest-serving fire investigation dog has been awarded an animal charity’s order of merit (荣誉勋章) .
Reqs, a 12-year-old black labrador (拉布拉多犬) , retired in July after 11 years spent helping to discover the causes of fires and putting the people against the law behind bars. During his service with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Reqs attended more than 500 fires. He found vital evidence for a police investigation after a fire in Leicester killed five people when 26 liters of petrol caught fire in the room below a shop.
He also helped to save one of his own kind, locating a painful dog that had been under ruins for two days after a house exploded in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.
His help in identifying the presence of ignitable liquids such as petrol, white spirit and lighter fluid, which could be used as evidence in court, reduced the time fire investigators had to spend on the scene.
The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) order of merit is considered the animal equal of the OBE. Reqs’s handler, Watch Commander Nikki Harvey, said: “He is an amazing dog who as well as his devotion to duty and service within the fire service is also a loving member of our family. He’s helped me through many tough times, at work and personally. ”
“Together we’ve attended some dangerous scenes, but he’s the one who pulls me through and we always had a hug at the end of a bad day. ” She added that her former co-workers was now “enjoying every minute” of retirement.
