2 . Modern life brings us many things to worry about, and you may come across a friend or two reminding everyone to “just breathe”. But can just breathing really make a difference?
“The rate and depth we breathe at has a huge effect on our mental state,” says Elissa Epel, a professor from San Francisco. Researchers like Epel are exploring how breathing can help people reduce anxiety and they find that breathing could be an overlooked key to finding more calm and peace.
In a 2017 study, highly anxious people were asked to take a breath course and to practise twice a day at home. After eight weeks, they reported feeling less anxious compared to a group that didn’t receive the training. They also showed physical signs of reduced anxiety, including lower heart rate.
A regular breathing practice might help you feel calmer in your everyday life. But other studies suggest that focusing on your breathing in moments of acute stress could also be useful.
In an older study, researchers told participants that they were going to receive electric shocks, which actually never happened. Some of them practised breathing slowly before the shocks, while others focused on breathing at a normal rate or didn’t regulate their breathing at all. The slow breathers not only reported feeling less anxious while expecting the pain, but also showed lower anxiety on a physical level, as measured by sweat and blood flow to the fingers.
Another study following the study above tested three different breathing styles: fast inhaling (吸入) with slow exhaling; slow inhaling with fast exhaling; or evenly paced inhaling and exhaling. Here, the fast inhaling with slow exhaling (2 seconds in, 8 seconds out) was the most effective at relieving both the physical and mental anxiety.
All these studies show how much influence our body has on our mind. If the way we’ re breathing is signaling to our brains that something is wrong, it’s no wonder we feel anxious.

3 . In recent years, Ethiopia has become a leader in solid waste management in Africa. Last year, the country transformed a rubbish site into a new waste-to-energy plant. The plant incinerates up to 1,400 tons of solid rubbish every day, supplying the capital with 25 percent of its electricity need.
Despite the great progress, challenges remain in Ethiopia. Laws and policies for the management of harmful wastes are still at an early stage and not effective in preventing illegal dumping (倾倒) of waste.
To help Ethiopia meet these challenges, the Waste Management Program that has been founded is supporting the country with a three-year project to improve institutional ability of sound management of harmful wastes.
In the initial stages, a project management unit will be formed. This unit will be responsible for reviewing and assessing Ethiopia’s present law frameworks, which does not specifically target the importation, production, transport, use and disposal (处理) of harmful wastes. Once legal gaps (漏洞) are identified, the project will seek to update existing law frameworks.
This project will work to promote the participation of women in policy development and decision-making processes. This will help make sure that existing policies and programs, as well as future institutional changes, are assessed with particular attention to women.
Many people in Ethiopia are not aware of the criminal influences of environmental violations and the need to report such crimes to the police. To solve this problem, Ethiopia will be conducting a series of activities, including creating awareness-raising programs. Ethiopia will also set up a national cooperation system for waste management. Authorities will also make budget in national and regional planning to make sure that these policies can survive even after the project’s completion.
The depth and breadth of these actions will make sure that this project has a lasting influence. In so doing, the recent progress Ethiopia has made in waste management will be not only kept, but become the basis for an environmental policy for years to come.

4 . Three kids got the surprise of a lifetime when their artwork showed up on a huge billboard, as a colorful reminder to frontline workers for their service. Shutterfly chose the designs from more than 450 works of art from children across the nation during the company’s Create Thanks campaign.
7-year-old Kelli is the Long Island granddaughter of a New York (NY) transit worker who inspired her drawing. She wanted to show him appreciation for helping people go to work on the transit system, and her mixed-media“thank you” has gone from hanging on her front door to hanging in Times Square.

9 . Pubs and other public places should rethink fitting washrooms with high-speed electric hand dryers because paper towels do a better job of containing germs when people do not wash their hands properly, researchers say. A study found that the dryers left more contamination (污染) on poorly washed hands when compared with old-fashioned paper towels. They also caused virus particles to be blown on to clothing and people who used them left a trail of microbes (微生物) when they touched surfaces.
The findings are relevant, the authors of the study said, because even healthcare workers often take shortcuts when washing their hands. A previous survey found that only 40 percent stuck to recommended hand-washing practices. The study involved an experiment where volunteers dipped their hands in a liquid containing a harmless virus and dried them using either an air dryer or paper towels. The participants also wore aprons to measure how contamination had spread to their clothing. They were then asked to walk through a hospital while touching surfaces such as lift buttons. Samples were collected from surfaces that volunteers had touched and from the aprons.
On average, the levels of contamination to surfaces volunteers touched were ten times higher after hands were dried with an air dryer than with paper towels. Researchers also saw greater transfer of microbes to the apron when volunteers used the air dryer. “The study was performed in a healthcare setting and has important lessons for health institutions that still have high-speed air dryers, but the results are also relevant for public restrooms,”Dr Ines Moura, a research fellow at the University of Leeds and an author of the study, said. “Based on the contamination observed, we question the choice of air dryers.” The study was published in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

10 . Recently, Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta. The company said it would better include what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR). The CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the existing brand could not possibly represent everything that they’re doing today, let alone in the future. He also revealed the company’s plans to build a “metaverse (元宇宙)” — an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment.
The term “metaverse” was invented by author Neal Stephenson in Snow Crash, a science fiction published in 1992. In the work, the metaverse is a sort of 3D virtual world. It’s not simply a virtual reality game but is a persistent and shared virtual world. Or rather, the metaverse is a whole universe of shared virtual spaces seemingly linked together — you could, essentially, teleport (瞬移) between them.
Metaverse combined at the very least five technologies — they are social media, online game, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and cryptocurrency (加密货币). Those technologies will bring users to an interactive world. AR and VR are vital for Metaverse. VR serves to present the virtual world visually and then AR will provide the audio and sensors for people to be able to interact. With Metaverse, Facebook will offer not only a texting service but also a multi-perspective virtual touch that feels like a real thing.
Facebook said that it plans to create 10,000 jobs in Europe over the next five years to work on metaverse-related endeavours (活动). The company also has introduced Oculus-branded virtual-reality headsets, and it joined with Ray-Ban to develop smart sunglasses that went on sale for $299. “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” Mark Zuckerberg said. “I view this work as critical to our mission because delivering a sense of presence — like you’re right there with another person — that’s the highest goal of online social experiences,” he said.
