1 . When you think of a map, is north on the top or the bottom? Usually, maps are designed with north on top, though when we think about it, there is no logical reason for this bias (偏见). After all, there is no up or down in space. So what is wrong with south, east or west being on the top of the map? The answer is: nothing at all. In fact, north-up maps only became the norm in the last few hundred years.

Ancient Egyptian maps had south at the top because the Nile River flows downhill from mountains in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the north. Mecca was to the south of most early Muslim civilizations, and south-up maps were designed so that viewers would look up to see Mecca. Medieval Christian maps had east at the top, as they believed the Garden of Eden was in the east. The only early maps that had north at the top were those of early China because the emperor lived in the north.

North seems to have settled at the top of maps during the 16th century, largely thanks to a Flemish mapmaker, Mercator. Mercator was a great admirer of an early Greek mapmaker, who, for reasons now unknown, put north at the top of maps, so Mercator did, too. When Mercator’s world map became the standard map to navigate the oceans, north up became standard as well.

What is the implication of this north-view of the world? Psychologically, people tend to think of up as good and down as bad. Just think of words and phrases like “upmarket”, “upbeat” and “moving up in the world”, and how they contrast with their opposites. Because north is so consistently put at the top of maps, people now think of north as good, too.

Several attempts have been made in recent years by introducing south-up maps to the market. These maps not only give us a chance to see the world differently, but also give everyone the chance to see themselves on top.

1. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.North-up maps were rare in ancient times.
B.Deciding up or down in space is ridiculous.
C.Mecca maps were based on a legend.
D.The south-up map first appeared in ancient Egypt.
2. Why is north associated with good?
A.An illogical reason.B.The spread of Mercator’s maps.
C.People’s preference for up.D.An age-old tradition in Greece.
3. What is the author’s attitude to south-up maps?
A.Cautious.B.Supportive.C.Uncaring.D.Disapproving.
4. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To criticize a phenomenon.B.To compare various facts.
C.To correct a cultural bias.D.To argue for a viewpoint.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者在蒙古留学的经历,她发现与游牧家庭相处时,语言不再是障碍,善良和真诚才是重要的社会标准。

3 . I didn’t quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad. I just needed something different, far from the late-night libraries of my college town. Most different, I hoped, would be my rural homestay: two weeks in central Mongolia with a family of nomadic(游牧的) herders.

I was studying Mongolian at the time, but still, there was so much I couldn’t say or understand. As we walked in the snow behind the goats, my host mom would ask me if I was cold, then giggle (咯咯地笑) and copy a big shiver to make sure I understood. In the evenings, she showed me how to make dumplings with her fingers. My host siblings would talk with me, speaking too fast for me to understand, as we explored the rocks around our tent; I’d listen and nod.

This verbal(言语的) barrier was strangely freeing. In the crowded dining hall at home, meeting new people made me anxious. I’d stay quiet, measuring out my words, struggling for something to say that wouldn’t expose me as unfunny or boring. In Mongolia, I couldn’t perfect my words. I could only smile, and try out one of the phrases I’d mastered: “May I help?” “Where is the dog?” “Are you tired?” My host family laughed at my pronunciation, at the way I threw up my hands and eyebrows in a frequent gesture of confusion. But in their laughter, I felt safe, unembarrassed.

With my Mongolian family on the grassland, I found a feeling of ease I’d never felt before. We were so different, they and I, and not just in language. Their skin was hardened and darkened by sun; I’d been hidden under hats and sunscreen since birth. My host siblings(兄弟姐妹) grew up drawing water from frozen streams and jogging behind herds of sheep; I spent summers at tennis camp.

For me, these gaps made all the difference. Without shared social measures, I wasted no time wondering how I was measuring up. Only real things—kindness, helpfulness—mattered.

1. Why did the author go to Mongolia for a term abroad?
A.She dreamed of living a nomadic life.B.She was tired of studying late at night.
C.She had to study Mongolians’ normal life.D.She was collecting information for libraries.
2. What does the underlined word “shiver” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Hug.B.Smile.C.Attack.D.Shake.
3. How did the author behave at the dining hall in her home country?
A.She felt at ease in the crowd.B.She usually weighed her words.
C.She asked a lot of funny questions.D.She often made others laugh with jokes.
4. What did the author learn from her life in Mongolia?
A.You are judged wherever you go.B.Nature makes humans feel insignificant.
C.Appearance reflects one’s standard of life.D.Being kind is the common social standard.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了世界各地出现的音乐公路。这些公路通过轮胎在特定凹槽上行驶产生音乐,给驾驶者带来愉悦的体验,同时还具有一定的安全作用。

4 . Many people love to listen to music while driving. Thanks to the world’s musical roads, drivers now don’t need to turn the radio on.     1

A musical road can create music when a car tires go over grooves (凹槽) on the road. To produce beautiful music, drivers must pass over the grooves at a certain speed. Signs often tell drivers the right speed.

2    . Since the mid-1990, musical rads have appeared in many different countries.     3    . To warn drivers to the incoming music, all the roads are marked by colored musical notes that are painted on these roads. Drivers can decide whether to go over the grooves or not because they are set on the side of the road.

In Hungary, there is a musical road in honor of one of the country’s most popular musical performers — Laszlo Bodi. Bodi was the lead singer for the band Republic.     4    . Sadly, Bodi passed away in 2013. But people still remember him as there’s a road where drivers can hear 30 seconds of the Republic song “Road 67”.

5    . In Indonesia, a road plays the first six notes of “Happy Birthday”. The fifth note is a little out of tune, though. This “mistake” keeps drivers awake and aware, and it has reduced the number of traffic accidents. Such is the power of music and musical roads.

A.Musical roads are also keeping drivers safe.
B.There is not any music road in Eastern countries.
C.Musical roads help improve the road safety greatly.
D.But they can also enjoy music while taking road trips.
E.Formed in 1990, the group is one of Hungary’s biggest acts and is still active today.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了Sailcargo公司建造的第一艘无碳排放运输货船,文章介绍了该船的优势,也同样介绍了该货船的不足之处。

5 . In a small, rough shipyard on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a small team is building what they say will be the world’s largest ocean-going clean cargo ship.

Ceiba is the first ship built by Sailcargo, a company trying to prove that zero-carbon shipping is possible, and commercially available. Made largely of wood, Ceiba combines both very old and very new technology: sailing masts stand alongside solar panels, a uniquely designed electric engine and batteries. Once on the water, she will be capable of crossing oceans entirely without the use of fossil fuels, which sets her apart.

“The thing that is striking is the fact that she’ll have one of the largest marine electric engines of her kind in the world,” Danielle Doggett said. The system also has the means to capture energy from underwater propellers (螺旋桨) as well as solar power, so electricity will be available for the engine when needed. “Really, the only limit on how long she can stay at sea is water and food on board for the crew.”

Despite some hold-ups due to the global disaster, the team hopes to get her on the water by the end of 2024 and operating by 2025, when she will begin transporting cargo between Costa Rica and Canada.

“There are actually loads of innovations happening that could transform shipping emissions, but few companies are willing to apply them to building ships like Ceiba.” says Lucy Gilliam. “So it’s not that we don’t have great ideas. The problem that we have is that fossil fuels are still too cheap. And we don’t have the rules to force people to take up the new technology.”

When it comes to promoting this kind of boat, it has to be said that Ceiba is small for a cargo ship — tiny in fact. She will carry around nine standard shipping containers. She is also relatively slow. Being a world-first, there are some aspects of Ceiba’s design that have yet to be proven at sea.

1. What is unique about Ceiba as a cargo ship?
A.It is the world’s largest.B.It is environment-friendly.
C.It is wooden with old technology.D.It is modern with unique equipment.
2. What determines Ceiba’s length of staying at sea according to Danielle Doggett?
A.The size of the sail.B.The weather of the ocean.
C.The power of the electric engine.D.The quantity of the living supplies.
3. Why are companies unwilling to build ships like Ceiba?
A.The rules are disobeyed.B.The fuels are affordable.
C.The bigger ships are preferable.D.The innovations are distrusted.
4. What is the author’s attitude to the innovation of Ceiba?
A.Objective.B.Doubtful.C.Critical.D.Favorable.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。Sharanya的一项关于利用太阳能进行垃圾收集的机器人发明使她在青少年创新者挑战赛中脱颖而出。

7 . The Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge is a science competition for U. S. middle-school students. It's run by Society for Science, which also publishes Science News Explores. The 30 finalists in this year's competition traveled to Washington, D. C. and also showed off their research projects.

Sharanya Chudgar, 14 years old, is one of the finalists in the competition and built a trash-collecting robot. The wheeled machine of the robot uses sensors to spot litter and a pan to pick it up. The robot's metal-detecting sensor helps it sort garbage from recyclables. And a light sensor can let the robot's solar panel angle itself toward the sun, collecting as much energy as possible.

Sharanya got the idea to build her trash collector by participating in litter cleanups. "When I signed up to volunteer at our local trash cleanup, I saw how much litter poliution there was and I knew that I had to fix this problem," Sharanya says. "People do have very limited time and resources, right? But robots don't. So it was then that my project idea formed in my head."

"Building the robot is my favorite part of this project," Sharanya says. "Ever since first grade, I've loved building Legos and building my robot felt just like building a Lego. But this project was a completely new experience since I hadn't ever had any experience in robotics before. Throughout the project, I had to use tons of power tools and I even had to cut pieces of metal to certain lengths. Whenever I needed to use a power tool, I had to turn to my dad who was always there to help out if necessary."

"It might seem difficult at times, but sticking to this and changing just one variable at a time gets you the best results," Sharanya says. This middle school scientist is solving global problems of litter pollution. For some, a science project might be an assignment or a fun hobby. But for Sharanya, doing research can also be a chance to help others and make the world a better place.

1. What can be known about the trash-collecting robot?
A.It is environment-friendly.B.Its solar panel can't turn.
C.It has multiple purposes.D.Its shape is like a human.
2. What inspired Sharanya to develop the robot?
A.The limited natural resources.B.The encouragement from the locals.
C.Her trash cleanup experiences.D.Her participation in the competition.
3. Why does Sharanya mention Legos in paragraph 4?
A.To express her thanks to her father.B.To show her love for the project.
C.To explain the difficulty of the project.D.To tell her interest in building Legos.
4. What is the author's attitude towards Sharanya's invention?
A.Unconcerned.B.Negative.C.Critical.D.Approving.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Andy Kong创业的过程。

9 . Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his strict Asian parents who tutored him at a young age by working for the family.

Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn’t a strong suit for Andy’s parents, and that’s where he was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business.

Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade. When he learned about Amazon Dropshipping (代发货模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram, he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the store eventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business.

“The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone to believe in you,” Andy says. He pushed through and did things for himself even when his loved ones discouraged it.

In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created an Amazon management company called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future.

When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, “Learning to sacrifice whether that’s family, friends, or soccer game for a single goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well with no shortcuts.”

1. Why did Andy work in his parents’ shops at a young age?
A.Because he could earn some pocket money.
B.Because his parents weren’t fluent in English.

If you met a lion or an elephant, I suppose you would run away; but even a lion will keep away from a man unless it is very hungry. Lions and tigers only kill and eat men when they have grown too old and too weak to catch their usual food, such as deer and other small animals.
