The Qingming Festival is on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox (春分), around April 4 or April 5 every year.
The Double Ninth Festival
The Winter Solstice (冬至)
The winter solstice is on around December 22 or 23 of the solar calendar each year. From that day on, the daytime will be longer and longer.
In China, this festival is in late January or early February, the last day of the lunar year. People celebrate it by having a family reunion dinner, setting off fireworks and staying up late. 4 . The number of people in my house has grown from six to seven recently. A young man from Spain has come to spend six weeks with us. He is not an ordinary young man; he’s actually my second cousin, and is here to spend time with this side of the family, and of course, to learn English.
Thankfully, he is the same age as my youngest son, and is very fun-loving. I’m sure that he will pick up a lot of English while he plays with my kids. That was actually how I picked up a lot of Spanish when I was a child. My mother would take me to Mallorca in Spain, to spend about a month in the summers. Because children play so much, and are less inhibited(拘束的) than adults, they absorb language like little sponges (海绵). Well, that’s what happened to me, and I’m very thankful for the experience.
So far, we have taken my cousin to Seattle for a couple of days, and down to a local river to look for gold. Today, I plan on taking him to the museum in the town of Cashmere which is excellent. He will get his first view of Native American life, and be able to walk through some of the original pioneer houses of this area. Like most boys who are thirteen, he is very curious and constantly asks questions. Of course, I don’t always have the answers! Coming to the U.S. is a big step for him, especially being so young. Mind you, he is a world traveller. His mother is an air hostess and is able to get cheap airline tickets, so they travel internationally all the time. So he is extremely comfortable in airports, and understands the routines of getting from one place to another. I hope that his being here will encourage my children to spend time in Spain, and also become international travellers.

5 . How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
A.Both are expressive. |
B.Both vary with culture. |
C.How do you know that I am angry? |
D.We use language to express our thoughts. |
E.Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives. |

6 . Did you know that birds could be “property owners”, too? In spring, the male robin (知更鸟) looks for a place to build a nest. A tree near a green lawn (草坪)th at has many worms (虫子) suits him best. When he finds the right place, he sings loudly. He tells other birds that this place is his property.
At the same time, other birds are choosing places for their nests. A robin does not mind if swallows nest nearby because swallows eat insects. They leave his worms alone. But other robins are different. They would eat the worm supply he needs for his own family.
When another male robin comes near, the robin owner sings to warn him away. The property owner looks cross and fierce (凶猛的).He raises his head feathers and holds his tail high. If the owner cannot frighten away the new robin, he attacks. The two fight until one is the winner. The new bird often gives up and flies away. So the first bird has defended his property. He now has the right to build a nest in the place.

7 . Dolphins (海豚) are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time — at least twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.
There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered (恢复) and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area — except for The Penguin.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.

10 . Manatees (海牛) are huge sea animals that can be as long as 4 meters when grown. They can weigh up to 590 kilograms. Despite their size, manatees only eat sea grass living in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm, shallow water looking for food.
But Florida’s manatees have been on the Us government’s list of endangered animals since 1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans, one of which is boats. Manatees are curious, and fairly slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being injured or killed by boats. With protection, manatees managed to bounce (反弹) back. At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were roughly 8,800manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge: they can’t get enough food to eat. Many of the beds of seagrass that manatees depend upon have been killed by human-caused pollution. Sea grass began to disappear around 2011. Warming seas, together with polluted water and fertilizers (肥料), have created huge growths of algae (藻类) on the ocean’s surface. The algae block the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow.
Last year, 1,101 manatees died, which was a record. Most died from hunger. Many of the manatees that remain are so thin that their bones can be seen and often they have trouble swimming. So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to get emergency food for the manatees. They decided to feed them with cabbage. The feeding station has been very successful. Around 350 manatees a day have come to get food. On some days, as many as 800 manatees have shown up.
Even so, scientists worry that hundreds more manatees could starve this winter. Over the long term, Florida is working to help restore sea grass beds, but that will take time. The state has set aside $8 million for the effort, which is still being planned.
