1 . Chinese Painters

Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was important in modern Chinese folk art. During his lifetime, he developed the tradition of combining poetry with painting. Between 1933 and 1940, he held several exhibitions ① in Asia and Europe to promote Chinese art. In this painting named Racing Horse (动词-ed短语作后置定语，修饰 this painting。), we can see a horse running (＂see＋宾语＋宾补＂结构，动词-ing形式作宾补，running表示(一匹马)正在疾驰。) at high speed like a missile (导弹) across the sky. On the left and right side of the painting, Xu cleverly drew in black ink to show the moving hair on the horse’s mane (鬃毛) and tail.      Qi Baishi (1864-1957) was one of China’s greatest painters. He worked with wood during his early youth. Then between 1902 and 1909,he travelled across China and painted many pictures of scenery. His interest later changed to simple pictures from everyday life, such as vegetables, flowers, birds, and insects. Chinese cabbages are a well-known subject of Qi’s works. In one of his works, there is a tiny insect near the Chinese cabbage. It makes the painting special. It has some red markings on its back. Its black eyes, which are fixed on ③ the Chinese cabbage (which引导的非限制性定语从句，修饰eyes。), show the creature’s interest in the vegetable. Qi Baishi’s style of painting often leaves the audience guessing（“leave+宾语+宾补”结构，leave表示“使、让”。）and makes them use their imagination.

Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) was one of China’s most brilliant and popular artists. Not only was he extremely productive (Not only位于句首，其所在分句用部分倒装。) -it is said that he created an average of 500 paintings a year (“it is said that...”句式，意为“据说……”。) -but he was also able to master a variety of painting styles, ranging from detailed portraits to ④ expressive landscapes (动词-ing形式短语作后置定语，修饰painting styles。). Born into an artistic family ⑤, Zhang Daqian was first taught how to paint by his mother and siblings. He also travelled extensively, honing (磨炼) his craft (动词-ing形式短语作伴随状语). However, traditional Chinese painting remained one of the great passions of his life, and he always considered himself part of that tradition.
