It’s widely accepted that exposure to a little dirt can be beneficial for health. This idea is supported by many studies suggesting that those who grow up in     1     with various microbes, such as farms, often have lower rates of diseases. This is believed to originate from their regular contact with a variety of microbial life.

In the 1970s, researchers discovered a soil bacterium with features that potentially reduces stress and boosts immune (免疫) response. This finding has contributed to the     2     of interest in the human microbiome (微生物群), leading people to focus on its development and applications.

Christopher A. Lowry, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, suggests the major microbial diversity we encounter is simply through experiencing     3     in person. This interaction is crucial not just for children but adults as well, improving both mental and physical     4    . A Finnish study further demonstrated this by     5     children in kindergarten with either a forest floor or an artificial yard. Those in contact with the natural environment showed stronger immune systems, and the effects were consistent over time.

Researchers conclude that participating in     6     activities like mountain biking, hiking, and gardening not only exposes individuals to these helpful microbes but also helps reduce symtoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Gardening, for instance, offers a healing experience,     7     real connection with the soil as you plant and care for vegetables or flowers.

Moreover, creating habitats that attract wildlife or participating in community agriculture can also motivate one’s exposure to beneficial soil microbes. Websites like U-Pick Farm Locator and PickYourOwn.org offer     8     to participate in farming, even for those without their own garden space.

Getting invovled with soil and nature in     9     ways, such as making mud pies or building fairy gardens, proves effective in mental improvement. It echoes the idea that direct     10     with the earth can be profoundly satisfying and pleasant.

Facebook and Instagram use artificial intelligence to spot verbal     3    . Most social-media sites have instructions on how to report     4     material and block other users. For example, Facebook this week announced new ways for users to avoid “unwanted, offensive or hurtful experiences”. However, a(n)     5     survey in Britain found that 70% of people thought that social-media companies do too little to prevent bullying.

More school-aged children have reported being cyberbullied than before the pandemic, according to the report     6    by the World Health Organization (WHO). The study surveyed more than 279,000 young people from 44 countries and regions. In Wales, where nearly 37,000 young people were surveyed, 17% reported falling     7    to cyberbullying. The recorder (竖笛) is an instrument of “incredible functions” for too many generations. But now, it faces extinction. Fewer and fewer people     1     it,with one of the UK’s top music schools reporting an 80% drop in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years.

Tom Redmond, the principal of Chetham’s school of music in Manchester, said only three of its pupils practised the recorder,     2     15 a decade ago. “More pupils were playing the piano or other instruments,” said Redmond. “The ones which have really flourished are the ones spent more time alone playing. Whereas the instruments that are more socially or orchestral based, like the recorder     3     there has been a decline. Plus, pupils now have more alternatives when     4     a hobby.”

Redmond also said that this problem     5     great attention because it extended “beyond the recorder itself and was a reflection of the future of music. “Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem, removing the recorder has a huge ripple effect beyond just the instrument.” he said.

The instrument is     6     revival and its future is so threatened that the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to     7     again so it does not go the way of the lute. Chris Orton, a recorder tutor and chair of the ERTA, is leading the fight against the instrument’s extinction. When receiving an interview     8     the association, he said, “The recorder is increasingly overlooked by students, and yet it has a rich history and incredible attractions. Bands like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles have used the recorder in their songs. As well as     9     beautiful sounds, it’s an accessible instrument in that it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it’s light and easy to carry.” Chris Orton hopes more young students can take up the recorder.

Raising a teenager today can be a challenging job. Long gone are the innocent     1     when you could have him accept your values or accomplish what you think the most important thing.

There must be some songs that just become rooted in your brain--- "Call Me Maybe," "Poker Face" and "Let It Go," to name a few. But do you know why these sticky songs --- ear worms, as our brains? they're known --are so hard to get rid of? And what kinds of songs are    1    to become sticky in our brains.

A few studies hold at least some answers. First of all, common ear worms seem to share some exhausted features. They're songs| you've heard a lot (which may be why current radio     2    tend to dominate “Top 10 Ear worm"list). They often have repetitive notes or unexpected intervals (间隔) in timing. They also have     3    rhythms and pitch (高音) patterns.

Scientists sometimes    4    to ear worms as "involuntary musical imagery". A study found that about 90 percent of Internet users reported getting a song    5    in their head at least once a week. The more musical the person is, the more ear worms they were likely to experience, the study found, and that result has been     6     up by other surveys. Research    7    at the 12th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition in 2012 in Greece found that longer no with smaller intervals of pitch between them made for stickier ear worms. It is    8    because long notes and limited changes in pitch are simply easier to sing. The research' also found that people with obsessive-compulsive (强迫症的)traits (meaning they have a    9    toward worry) reported ear worms more frequently.

People are more likely to pick up an ear worm when they are doing something    10    , like jogging or chores (家务活), according to another study.

If you logged on to weibo over the weekend, chances are that your web page was     1     with videos of US celebrities dumping ice water on their heads. It seems that everyone is getting in for fun, from popular singers like Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake, to high-ranking of tech executives including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.

Is it some kind of new, cool way to cope with the summer heat? Of course not. It’s a fundraising game called the Ice Bucket Challenge, and it aims to raise     2     for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化症,亦称“渐冻人症”).

The challenge’s     3     is straightforward. It involves daring a person to dump a bucket of ice water over his head within 24 hours, or donate money for fighting against ALS. Even if a person completes the challenge, they’re more than welcome to donate money anyhow.

Once a person completes the challenge, they’re supposed to issue the same challenge to several other people, usually three, which is why the challenge has been growing and growing.

Since the beginning of June, the game has spread across social media timelines and late-night talk shows in the US. According to Facebook, more than 15 million people so far have posted,     4    , or liked a post about the challenge. It has raised more than $2.3 million (14 million yuan) to support research for the illness.

As for the origins of the craze, new data from the Facebook data science team heavily supports one theory: that the ice bucket challenge     5     with Pete Frates, a former captain of the Boston College baseball team. Frates, 29, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, can no longer speak and uses a wheelchair. After Frates posted his own ice bucket challenge video on July 31, the game took off and has now become one of the biggest activities in the online community.

The challenge went popular on social media, particularly in the United States, with people, celebrities, politicians and athletes posting videos of themselves online and on TV     6     in the event. But before the challenge, public awareness of the disease was relatively     7    .

Of course, ice bucket challenges need to be undertaken with at least basic     8     and common sense. Those who tip the water need to be     9     enough — and strong enough—to ensure that they can safely control the bucket. A giant water-filled tub is certainly heavy enough to     10     injure or even kill a person it drops on.
