1 . Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once.

The eighth chapter is exceedingly brief, and relates that Gibbons, the amateur naturalist of the district,     1     lying out on the spacious open downs without a soul     2     a couple of miles of him, as he thought, and almost dozing, heard close to him the sound as of a man coughing, sneezing, and     3     swearing savagely to himself; and looking, beheld nothing. Yet the voice was indisputable. It continued to swear with that breadth and variety     4     distinguishes the swearing of a cultivated man. It grew to a climax, diminished again, and died     5     in the distance, going     6     it seemed to him in the direction of Adderdean. It lifted to a spasmodic sneeze and ended. Gibbons had heard nothing of the morning’s occurrences,     7     the phenomenon was so striking and disturbing that his philosophical tranquillity vanished; he got up hastily, and hurried     8     the steepness of the hill towards the village, as fast as he could go.

Secrets are bad for your health

I grew up in a Midwestern town where the popular wisdom was to only talk about what was pleasant and to keep secrets,if necessary,to make that happen. This meant staying silent when someone offended you, rarely     1     negative feelings and smiling a little more than is necessary. It also meant     2     room for airing any sort of dirty laundry, especially not the kinds of personal secrets that keep people up at night.

Many of us like to believe that sweeping unpleasant truths under the rug might make them     3     go away. Instead, keeping secrets--especially heavy ones--can spin an even more     4     web of isolation and deception. So why do we do it?

The truth can hurt. But in many situations,it s better to get it out and let the     5     start, rather than allowing it to become more dangerous. The burden of     6     in the truth doesn't just disappear. It hides itself in the back of your mind and can cause a number of     7       to your life and health.

"If the situations in your daily life are regular     8     of the secret, and you find it stressful to keep it,then yes,it can have emotional and physical consequences.” says Dr.Dean McKay. “Some people also find keeping secrets stressful out of a general     9     that they will 'slip’. This     10     and recurring thought of the secret can in itself be stressful.”

With the rapid growth of the aging population in China, the installation of elevators in old communities has gradually become an inevitable issue. A lot of neighborhoods are living no longer     1     due to the living ills of their six-story, elevator-less buildings.

Recently, a residential     2     in Hangzhou has come up with an initiative designed to     3     the problem as to how to raise funds for facilities much-needed by elderly residents, which are called “public transit elevators.” Pay one yuan, and you can take the ride once, just like taking a bus. The price remains unchanged whether you take the lift by yourself or with your whole family. From my perspective, this     4     solution is quite necessary, but still needs improvement.

The greatest concern is the price. Residents in old communities have been at odds with one another regarding how to most effectively distribute the necessary money with which to pay for the installation of elevators. Most residents living on lower floors are     5     reluctant to pay for an elevator to be installed given that it will likely end up occupying their common area of public space. For those living on higher floors, however, the lack of elevator can often be quite     6    , especially for the elderly. Therefore, although the installation charge has been cut down to a very low level by adding pay-to-use elevators, how to properly allocate(分配) the     7     costs involved remains to be negotiated. Another problem has     8     concerning who’ll ultimately pay for the ride, suppose two families share one elevator at the same time.

Much easier as it is to work things on paper, it requires a considerable investment of financial and material resources in its initial stage, and it will only be able to     9     subtle returns, at least in the short run, making it challenging for whatever authority to carry out the proposal.

Still we have to place ourselves in the position in which we can best serve the greater society and by this, treat the issue in a more reasonable     10     so as to minimize any potential losses.

Why do people read negative Internet comments and do other things that will obviously be painful'?Because humans have an inherent need to    1     uncertainty, according to a recent study in Psychological Science. The new research reveals that the need to know is so strong that people will seek to satisfy their curiosity even when it is clear the answer will hurt.

In a    2     of four experiments, behavioral scientists at the University of Chicago and the Wisconsin School of Business tested students' willingness to express themselves to unpleasant stimuli in an effort to satisfy curiosity. For one    3    ,each participant was shown a pile of pens that the researcher claimed were from a previous experiment The twist. Half of the pens would    4     an electric shock when clicked.

Twenty-seven students were told which pens were electrified;another twenty-seven were told only that some were electrified. When left alone in the room, the students who did not know which ones would shock them clicked more pens and incurred(遭受)more shocks than the students who knew what would happen.Subsequent experiments reproduced this effect with other stimuli, such as the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard and photographs of     5     insects.

The drive to discover is deeply    6    in humans, much the same as the basic drives for food or shelter, says Christopher Hsee of the University of Chicago. Curiosity is often considered a good instinct---it can lead to new scientific advances, for instance---but sometimes such    7     can backfire. The insight that curiosity can drive you to do self-     8     things is a profound one.

Unhealthy curiosity is possible to     9     , however. In a final experiment, participants who were encouraged to predict how they would feel after viewing an unpleasant picture were less likely to choose to see such an image. These results suggest that imagining the outcome of following through on one's curiosity ahead of time can help    10    whether it is worth the endeavor.“ Thinking about long-term consequences is key to reducing the possible negative effects of curiosity," Hsee says. In other words, don't read online comments.

The Trunkster, a bag with built-in smart features might just challenge the standard roller bag. The main security feature: It's zipperless. A sliding roll top-door design allows for easy     1     by the owner, but reduces the risk of theft or accidental opening during baggage     2    . If airport security has to search the bag, there a TSA-approved combination lock. Need to juice up your phone? A     3     battery can charge portable devices through a USB connection. Perhaps the coolest part - especially if your holiday shopping habits put you at a risk of going beyond baggage weight     4     --- is a built-in digital scale. Want to know how much stuff you're pulling? Lift the bag and the display on the handle shows weight in pounds or kilograms.

Trunkster co-founder Jesse Potash said he and his co-founder, based in New York, created the luggage in 2014, after finding nothing they believed could     5     accessibility. They wanted to “completely     6    “ the classic case -- with zippers -- for “the modern, minimalist(极简的)traveler,” Potash says. He adds that they didn't want to       7     the user with “as many features as possible” because that would not be required.

One more feature you can add on? Tracking. Airlines are     8     doing a better job these days of not losing bags. But for those who want to track their cases there are stand-alone gadgets(精巧的装置) like the Trakdot or Pocket-Finder Luggage Tracker. For an extra $40, you can add a subscription-free, removable GPS to the Trunkster.

But smarting up a     9     object comes with a problem. “When you have this much technology in a suitcase ... there are more things to change,' says George Hobica, a world traveler. Besides, the Trunkster is all black, and we all know that finding a black-colored bag in a sea of suitcases is like searching for a blade of grass on a football field. Attention, luggage manufacturers looking to     10     the typical pattern: Go bolder with unusual colors and designs.
