When my parents were in trouble at Christmas, our neighbors taught me the true value of kindness. I grew up on the 50-acre farm in the small country community in Missouri, as the sixth of seven children. My parents were hard working farmers and paid regular visits to the farm growing crops. During meals they often talked about how everything on the table except the sugar and flour came from the land. Although we were not rich, they were eager to help others and would make donations to the needy every year.

Besides running the farm, Dad was also a carpenter. However, unfortunately, in the fall of 1970 as he was working on the house, the ladder broke. He fell off the ladder and his back was fractured (使断裂) in two places. He suffered from great pain. Misery and worry took over our family as well. He stayed in hospital for three weeks with his head and feet down, permitting his back to be straight again.

On Thanksgiving day, dad was still in hospital. We always butchered pigs the day after the holiday, and that year my uncle showed up with a couple of cousins to help my three elder brothers prepare our year’s supply of pork.

After Dad returned home, he was not in a good situation and unable to work. I was too young to realize our family had no money coming in and could hardly make ends meet as Christmas approached.

One night we heard a car coming up the long driveway. Growing up in the faraway farm, we kids were curious about who was visiting. As it turned out, Peggy, one of our neighbors, was at the door, holding an envelope filled with money. She told my dad she had collected money in the community and was there to deliver it.

3 . A new study released on Monday showed that 2019 was another year of record-setting ocean warming. An international team examined data going back to-the1950s, looking at temperatures from the ocean surface to 2,000 meters deep. The study, which was published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, also showed that the oceans are warming at an increasing speed and the hottest five years ever recorded all came in the last five. “The upward trend is relentless(不间断的), and so we dare say that most of the warming is man-made climate change.” said Kevin Trenberth, a distinguished senior scientist.

Another scientist, Lijing Cheng, the paper’s lead author said there are no reasonable alternatives apart from the human emissions of heat trapping gases to explain this heating, “The Hiroshima atom-bomb (广岛原子弹) exploded with an energy of about 63,000,000,000,000 Joules.”(63万亿焦耳热量) Cheng Said. "I did a calculation...the amount of heat we have put in the world's oceans in the past 25 years equals to 3.6 billion Hiroshima atom-bomb explosions,"he added. That's equivalent to dropping roughly four Hiroshima bombs into the oceans every second over the past quarter of a century. But because the warming is speeding up, the rate at which we are dropping these imaginary bombs is getting faster than ever.

Oceans serve as a good indicator of the real impact of climate change. Covering almost three quarters of Earth's surface, they absorb the vast majority of the world's heat. Since 1970, more than 90% of the planet’s excess heat went into the oceans, while less than 4% was absorbed by the atmosphere and the land, the study said. However, just because people live on land,it doesn't mean they are immune from the effects of the warming waters. Ocean warming has a profound impact on the entire world.

1. What is to blame for ocean warming according to Kevin Trenberth?
A.Atomic bombs.
B.Land reduction.
C.Human activities.
D.Environmental damage.
2. What can we learn according to the text?
A.Land an absorb more heat than oceans by the study.
B.The temperature of oceans has been increasing rapidly recently.
C.Kevin and Cheng have different opinions on ocean warming.
D.Cheng found other reasons besides human emissions for ocean warming.
3. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A.Ocean warming has becoming a concern of the world.
B.The change of the oceans has great effect on people.
C.People live on land so they're not influenced by oceans.
D.People have to move to oceans because of limited land.
4. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To call on people to protect the environment.
B.To show people a new study published recently.
C.To prove the atomic bombs can cause great damage.
D.To make people realize the ocean warning is speeding.

8 . Cats certainly know the sound of their food can being opened, but do they know their own name? Cats might be skilled in knowing how to always land on their feet, keep themselves clean, and strategically knock things off the counter, but do they know their own names?

“While cats might not always understand what exactly we’re saying. They definitely can learn to associate sounds with good or bad outcomes,” says Mikel Delgado Cat Behavior Expert with Rover. “When you talk to your cat, they probably respond most to your tone of voice. People tend to talk to their pets in higher-pitched voices which are good at getting their attention.”

Cats can also recognize noises that indicate food or attention is coming. They associate those sounds with a positive experience, so they learn to recognize what they mean.

Delgado adds, “Over time, our pets do learn to associate their name with certain things-like attention, or food. You can help your cat learn their name faster by not using lots of different nicknames, which might be confusing to your pet and they may not always realize that you are speaking to them, “Your cat is more likely to respond to their human's voice versus a stranger’s voice.” says Delgado.

You can train a cat to respond to words the same way dogs do. In order to train,Delgado says you first need to identify what motivates your cat, like a particular treat or toy. Then start with something simple such as sit.

“Over time, your cat makes the connections between their behavior, your response or the sound, and the treat,” says Delgado. “Then when they want a treat, you might notice that they offer the behavior you trained-such as sitting or rolling over-which is why it’s a good idea not to train your cat to do annoying things.”

A.Stand straight.B.Escape safely.C.Find home.D.Make friends.
