文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了一项研究表明,适量饮酒或许对心血管病人有利。

4 . Light-to-moderate alcohol consumption may offer some protective benefits for patients with heart disease, a new study suggests. The research pulled data from a combined sample field of 48,423 patients, thousands of whom had history of heart-related diseases.

The researchers noted that lifestyle and dietary habits play a major role in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but that the impact of alcohol consumption on patients’ prognosis remains unclear. “While light-to-moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of developing multiple cardiovascular outcomes in general population groups, it’s difficult to extend the supposed cardio-protective effects to CVD patients because of their typically older age and compromised vasculature as well as the medications they take to prevent secondary events,” researchers wrote.

Among the patient sample, former drinkers were separated from current drinkers, with the latter being broken into three groups of low-level drinkers, medium-level drinkers and high-level drinkers. Patients were followed until either their death or first detected heart-related diseases.

An analysis of three major cohorts together with those from 12 published studies found J-curve relationships between alcohol consumption and mortality in those with cardiovascular disease. The greatest reduction in all-cause mortality was found among patients with light alcohol consumption. “In summary, our study shows an alcohol intake up to about 105g a week is associated with lower risks of both mortality and subsequent cardiovascular events among CVD patients,” the team wrote.

The research team warned that the study had limitations and that current drinkers may not need to stop drinking for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, but rather be informed that lower levels of consumption may be associated with reduced risks. Patients who are non-drinkers, however, should not be encouraged to take up light drinking.

A.They published twelve relevant papers.
B.They conducted the study by categorizing.

D.They applied their findings to the CVD patients.
3. What is the author’s attitude toward the result of the study?
A.DoubtfulB.ObjectiveC.PositiveD.Critical

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。作者Fionn Ferreira是一个科学比赛的获奖者。他介绍了自己使用铁磁流体从水中去除微塑料的实验项目及获奖的经历, 表达了自己对科学的热爱。

5 . I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.

Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets. After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.

I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.

Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.

One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.

Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.

1. What do we know about Fionn?
A.He is studying at college.B.He lives by the sea.
C.He works for a science fair.D.He was born in America.
2. Why did Fionn set up the project?
A.To purify the polluted air.B.To recycle microplastics in cities.
C.To collect plastic wastes in water.D.To remove microplastics from water.
3. Which of the following can be used to describe Fionn?
A.Competitive.B.Creative.C.Optimistic.D.Humorous.
4. What is Fionn looking forward to?
A.Seeing his project applied widely in real life.
B.Going to the science fair to get another prize.
C.Attracting more attention to his project.
D.Getting his project acknowledged by the judges.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the first day of fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Brown, told my class a story about her husband Rob, who is a brain cancer survivor. She became emotional as she talked about their journey through his treatment and recovery. After what Mrs. Brown experienced with Rob’s illness, she decided to devote part of her life to helping people in similar situations. She told us about a local organization she was a part of called Be Head Strong, which works to support and comfort families with a member suffering from brain cancer.

Mrs. Brown never showed any sadness about the disease. She instead spoke only with words of determination to find a cure. Through her positive spirit she showed us how strong hope could be.

My parents taught me form a very young age that making wise choices with my money is important. I would always set aside most of my $2.50-a-week allowance. By the end of the school year, I had saved over one hundred dollars, $131.30 to be exact. One day I was wondering what to do with it. I thought about the stories Mrs. Brown told us. I decided that was where I wanted my money to go.

As the last day of school approached, I told my parents about my gift for Mrs. Brown. My mom helped me wrap the heart-shaped box full of dollars and coins. After all the other kids had left on the last day of school, I handed Mrs. Brown the present. As she opened it, I told her that I wanted the money to go to Be Head Strong to help people like Rob. She broke into tears and hugged me tightly. At last, she invited me to Be Head Strong’s annual fundraiser and auction.
