文章大意:本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍的是三部会给全家带来快乐的电影的相关信息。

1 . It’s Thanksgiving, which means a lot of family time. Here are some movies that will be fun for the whole family.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 – Since the book series is so popular, and so is Jennifer Lawrence, you’re likely to have someone in the family who wants to go to the theaters to finish the games. This one tests the limits of PG-13 (适合13岁以上的电影) in its intensity, though, so be careful of that if you’re taking some little ones.

Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences (镜头) of violence and action, and for some thematic material

Availability: In theaters everywhere

The Good Dinosaur – Another great choice for adults and kids alike, Pixar’s latest offering goes back millions of years when dinosaurs weren’t destroyed by a small planet that hit Earth. We follow a little dinosaur named Arlo who must learn to face his fears when he gets separated from his family. It’s a touching story for the whole family, so make sure you bring some tissues (纸巾) for the tears that will eventually come out of your face.

Rating: PG for peril (危险), action and thematic clements

Availability: In theaters everywhere

Love the Coopers – Olivia Wilde stars in what is this year’s family Christmas comedy that deals with the trials (考验) and sufferings of not being able to choose your relatives. This one doesn’t have a great Rotten Tomatoes score at 21%, but I’ve heard that it’s pretty charming nonetheless thanks to Wilde.

Rating: PG-13 for thematic elements, language and some sexuality

Availability: In theaters cverywhere

Inside Out – Pixar’s summer release is a funny, beautiful tale of growing up and dealing with the complicated emotions inside your head. After seeing this one a couple of times, it quickly rose up to be my second favorite Pixar movie of all-time (behind The Incredibles). Honestly, it’s better than The Good Dinosaur. If you don’t feel like heading to the theaters, just pick this one up to watch at home.

Rating: PG for mild thematic elements and some action

Availability: Blu-Ray, DVD and VOD

Note: PG stands for parental guidance, which suggested some material may not be suitable for children.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述作者遇见一个乞丐后的所作所为,作者的行为给那个乞丐带来了未曾预料到的幸福,作者也因此事感到非常快乐.

4 . I was feeling splendid this morning! When approaching the bakery I saw a man asking for coins. I’ve often seen him and usually don’t react well to his whiney (嘀咕不停的) tone of his voice. This time I decided I’d give him something. After I’d paid for my tea-to-go, I got a 5 Euro bill ready. Leaving the store really slowly so he’d have a good chance to approach me, I nearly ran into him.

“Would you maybe have some coins for me?” He asked.

I said, “No, sorry, I don’t,” and watched his face fall already at what he thought was a refusal, one of many thousands he probably gets each day.

“I only have this for you”, I said and held the bill in front of his eyes. The way his jaw nearly fell and his eyes widened were priceless.

“Err… wow!” he said, doing a double-take. “That’s really… Thanks.”

“No problem,” I said. “I’m doing well at the moment, and I wanted to share it—have a good day!”

And I walked away. Actually, I walked away leisurely (悠闲地), and I did giggle and laugh out loud for the next 200 meters. Really, you should have seen his face. He totally had not seen that coming! The joy, I think, did not just come from the fact that I love being generous. It also came from breaking up his expectations of what would happen, to allow for that tiny moment of amazement.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要介绍了摇滚歌星Pat Benatar。

6 . Daughter of an opera singer, Pat Benatar first studied opera at Juilliard before dropping out to marry her high school sweetheart. Together they moved to New York, but the two soon separated. In the hope of living happily ever after, she remembered her earlier dream of becoming a professional singer and started trying hard to realize it. At night, Benatar worked as a singing waitress. During the day, she knocked at the doors of record companies with her demo tape(样带).

Then, on Halloween night 1977, Benatar gave a performance dressed as a modern vampire(吸血鬼). The audience went wild. This experience led Benatar to change her looks. In her later performances, she usually wore black tights and a short black top.

The new style made her performances more popular, and gave her a chance to work for Chrysalis Records. Her first single, Heartbreaker, headed the Top 40 charts, as did several of her other songs. Benatar won four Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal performance, from 1980 to 1983. Benatar was also the winner of three American Music Awards: Favorite Female Pop/Rock Vocalist of 1981 and 1983, and Favorite Female Pop/Rock Video Artist of 1985.

In 2010, Pat Benatar wrote a book, Between a Heart and a Rock Place, discussing her early life and success in the music business.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述美国每年有很多未用的和过期药被回收处理掉,既浪费钱也污染环境,而现美国有些州对这些药物开始采取了捐赠计划。

8 . Most people have no idea what to do with their old drugs. Unused or expired(到期的) medicines lying around at home can get into the wrong hands, leading to accidental poisoning or drug overdose. When drugs are flushed or sent to landfill(垃圾场), the medicines can pollute our groundwater, rivers, and streams, threatening human and sea life.

In an effort to find a solution for drugs kept in medicine boxes or waterways, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration launched its first National Take-Back Day in September 2010. In the drug take-back program, the returned drugs are sent to medical waste incinerators(焚烧炉). However, the process of transporting and burning such waste can release greenhouse gas emissions that could be potentially greater than those generated if the drugs were poured into landfills.

“But take-back programs are preferred as they reduce the risk of drug misuse and the incineration effectively eliminates the entrance of these medicines into our nation’s waters,” says Tim Carroll, a spokesperson for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Perhaps surprisingly, not all unused medicines need to be thrown away. Every year five billion dollars’ worth of unexpired medicines end up being deserted in the U.S. “We’re wasting a lot of medicines which are already paid for,” says Anandi Law, a patient engagement specialist. “Millions of U.S. adults skip or delay getting their prescriptions(处方) filled due to high costs. We could give them to somebody else who needs it.”

Now, at least 40 states have passed legislation establishing drug donation(捐赠) programs that allow drug manufacturers, medical and long-term care facilities, and sometimes individuals to donate their unused drugs. For example, since its start in 2007, Iowa’s program, SafeNetRx, has served more than 117,000 patients and redistributed nearly 54-million-dollar worth of medicines and supplies. Georgia’s program was formally launched in 2018, and it has already filled prescriptions worth over 50 million dollars.

“All of these efforts are still relatively new,” Carroll says. “We still have a long way to go until households change their habits.”

1. What disadvantage of the drug take-back program is mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.It costs large amounts of money.
B.It increases the greenhouse effect.
C.It can produce poisonous chemicals.
D.It wastes lots of energy to deal with old drugs.
2. What is Tim Carroll’s attitude towards the take-back program?
A.Supportive.B.Indifferent.C.Cautious.D.Negative.
3. What is Anandi Law’s suggestion about unused and unexpired medicines?
A.Sending them to landfills.
B.Selling them at a low price.
C.Donating them to someone in need.
D.Developing technologies to recycle them.
4. What do the numbers in paragraph 5 mainly indicate?
A.The challenging task of SafeNetRx.
B.The expense of recycling unused drugs.
C.The significance of health care facilities.
D.The achievements of drug donation programs.
