I remember the first time I got on a horse. I was two years old and we were watching a friend of the family ride. My mom agreed to let me take a short ride with the friend and that was it! I was horse crazy. From then on, I drove my parents insane begging for a horse.
When I was four years old, I had Selective Mutism (缄默症). This is a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my parents, my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school.
I suffered silently through school until I was ten years old when one in a long string of psychologists had an idea. One day I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given an opportunity to work for it. I couldn’t believe my good luck, but I could not answer. Finally, I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear. “A horse.” was all I could say.
I was to get a little horse, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain. I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to accomplish. I had to answer the phone five times per weck, make five phone calls to my friends, say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
I did everything that was asked of me and the day came when my parents found a local riding stable that had the perfect pony. His name was Sequoia, so perfect that I fell in love with him immediately. We boarded him and I began taking lessons. It truly was a dream come true.

5 . Making the big decision about choosing a lasting and fulfilling career is a hard thing. Here’s how to decide which carcer you want, especially if you’re unsure of where to start.
Ask family members and friends that you trust. When you don’t know what you want to do, you can note any trends in feedback provided by people who are close to you.
Consider your personality and individual preferences. Take a personality assessment, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. If someone is more introverted and they are in an environment that is very outgoing and exposes them to a lot of people, that may be a reason why many people change their career.
Look into a fast-growing industry. Careers in fast-growing industries may give you more opportunities. If you don’t know what field interests you, you can make a short list of fast-growing industries such as health care, sales or software.

6 . Few would question that arts, in its massive forms and media, are like a mirror that reflects the social, cultural, economic or even political situation of a society of a particular era. However, beyond being simply an illustration of the human condition, arts can be vital in pushing the country forward culturally and economically.
Without doubt, arts are important for the progress of society. They enable individuals to develop on the whole and deepen the social ties in communities by gathering people to create, experience and enjoy art together, which can be seen from traditional ethnic dances to interactive theatre performanccs. Beyond material wants and needs, human beings find fulfilment in experiencing and expressing things of remarkable value through arts. Meanwhile, strong citizens’ participation in arts also strengthens the social fabric of a nation.
Moreover, arts enable a nation to progress in human rights and values. As powerful media that are able to stir hearts and cause reflection, arts can speak up the human voice of criticism sharply and clearly in times of crisis, and call upon society to seek the common good. It is evident that arts, which express human values and emotions, can constitute a profound way of promoting human dignity and additionally, form the barrier of the ethical and moral life of society.
More often than not, a booming arts scene may not narrow the rich-poor divide. It’s not hard to see that in a highly competitive world, it is essential for governments to prioritize the development of a strong workforce and the building of sustainable industries. However, arts may well complement (补充) economic policies as arts encourage individuals to exercise creativity. As Albert Einstein stated, imagination is more important than knowledge. While knowledge and professional skills may stimulate a country’s development, the ability to innovate and think out of the box may be valuable to a society facing ever new and unpredictable challenges.
While the importance of arts may differ from country to country, depending on its economic circumstances and the socio-political issues, the importance of arts to the progress of a nation should not be overlooked.

D.Arts can bridge the gap between rich and poor. |
7 . Dogs see the world through their noses. Their special ability to recognize specific scents helps them find bombs, guns, drugs and human remains. Man’s best friend may also be his best health ally. There are reports about dogs trained to sniff out cancer, diabetic conditions and other health problems. According to a new study, dogs can do something just as remarkable: sniff out stress in people.
While previous studies have suggested dogs might pick up on human emotions possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell. “This study has definitely proven that when people have a stress response, their odor profile changes.” said Clara Wilson, a PhD student and first author of the research. Wilson added the findings could prove useful when training service dogs that support people with emotional damage.
Wilson and her colleagues were able to train four dogs to indicate the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the line-up included unused gauze, samples from another person, or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day.
Then the team turned to samples collected from 36 people, who were asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17. The participants reported feeling stressed by the task and for the 27 who carried it out in the laboratory, their blood pressure and heart rate rose. The dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task from two containers holding unused gauze.
The researchers then included not only unused gauze but samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials. The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials.
The team say while it was unclear what chemicals the dogs were picking up on, the study shows humans produce a different odor when stressed.

8 . The most important life lesson I’ve learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I’m not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.

A.She benefits from the coach’s words. |
B.She used to be a professional runner. |
C.She sees the value of a reference point. |
D.She’s suffering a lot from peer pressure. |
9 . The Best Films of 2022
Tar
Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tar. She is widely considered as one of the greatest living composer-conductors and first-ever female music director of a German orchestra. It is an unfolding thriller about a brilliant artist who’s destroyed by her own appetites. So many of the people who see “Tar” come away believing that Lydia Tar actually exists.
The Fabelmans
Spiclberg was right to wait this long to tell the story of his youth on film. He has made a vivid and well-structured biography that looks back in love and anger. The movie not only aches at memories of watching the separation of his parents, but also tells teen tales of romance and prejudice. And we can feel Spielberg’s enthusiasm in the medium he would revolutionize.
Turn Every Page
If Lizzic Gottlicb’s documentary about Robert Caro and Robert Gottlicb were just a piece of good-old-days literary work, it wouldn’t be a deep and satisfying movie. Robert Caro, who is an outstanding author of “The Power Broker”, and Robert Gottlieb, the legendary editor who has guided all of Caro’s books, emerge as stimulating giants. What unites them is their devotion to the civilizing glory of the word.
The Musical
The plot of the movie is about Evan, a New York kid suffering from his parents’ divorce, as he tries to absorb himself into small-town Indiana and stage a successful Coming-of-Age Day. The more we see the movie directed by Tamra Davis, the more we will be addicted to the magic of the songs and the energy released by the musical sequences.
1. What is the setting of the first movie Tar?A.Germany history. | B.Literary world. |
C.Classical music. | D.Indiana culture. |
A.Tar. | B.The Musical. |
C.Turn Every Page. | D.The Fabelmans. |
A.They are both shot in New York. |
B.They focus on teenagers’ school life. |
