What kind of brain do you have? A theory claims that the female brain is mainly built for empathy (E)—the ability to understand other people, and that the male brain is mainly built for understanding and building systems (S). According to this theory, there are three brain types: the brains of type E, the brain of type S, and the “balanced brain” which has both    1     —empathizing and systematic thinking.

It’s important to    2     that not all men have brains of type S, and not all women have brains of type E. But there are differences. For example, men and women may tend to choose different things to read on the railway platform: men prefer to choose magazines that    3     computers, cars, photography, etc; females are more     4     to go for magazines on fashion, romance, beauties, etc.

You may think that those     5     are in some way influenced by people’s upbringing. Culture and socializtion indeed play a role. However, there is scientific evidence    6     that biology also plays a part.

A new study shows that newborm girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mechanical mobile, which indicates that certain differences between male and female brains are biological. It has also been observed that baby girls as young as 12 months old     7     more strongly to other people’s emotional problems. Teenage girls and women spend more time    8     friends who have a problem.

Boys, from an early age on, seem to love putting things together and playing with toys which have buttons to press. You see the same sort of pattern in the adult workplace. People whose jobs are in metal working or the construction    9     are almost entirely male.

The theory says that, on the whole, males and females differ in the kinds of things that they are interested in and that they may find    10     , but both genders have their strengths and their weaknesses.
