1 . On a hot summer day, a friend and I decided to go to the forest for a walk. So we went to the forest by car. We walked around for a while (—会儿). Then we realized that we should probably pay attention to where we’re going, so we wouldn’t get lost. We noticed a marked path and it looked like the path which we took from the parking lot (停车场). We started following it. After two hours, we realized we were just looping around. The part of the path that was supposed to take us back to the car seemed nowhere to be found! So we left the marked path, in the hope of finding our way back. We found a cycling path and followed it to a parking lot. Sadly it wasn’t our parking lot! A map at that parking lot showed us where all the other parking lots were and we noticed we were a long way from all of them! Except that, we couldn’t know which one was “our” parking lot.
We decided not to walk towards any of them. Instead we walked up to a house nearby. A lady was unloading (卸载) her food from her car, and we asked if she could help us. We described to her where we had come from and what the roads looked like. She immediately knew the place we described and said that we were a long way off. And then, to my surprise, she said: “Why don’t you jump into the car? I’ll take you there.” I couldn’t believe it and shouted: “Really?!” I was so excited. She drove us right back to our car, and we were so grateful.

4 . Everyone was shocked as I placed my son Ilias’s first birthday cake in front of him. He loved Sesame Street, so I made him an Elmo cake in rich red icing(糖霜). I’d worked for hours to perfect my design and make the most delicious and jaw-dropping cake. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I started baking(烘焙) when Ilias was born. At that time, I struggled with the pressure of being a new mum and was diagnosed with postnatal depression(产后抑郁症). So to help walk out of that dark hole, at night when Ilias slept I ran into the kitchen and decided to bake a cake.
Then, with my mum’s birthday coming up, I saw a handbag cake in a shop. I threw my all into copying it and finally I made it. Mum was so blown away by my creation that she didn’t cut the cake. Instead, she kept it in a glass cake stand on display at home for a month.
Over time I created many delicious delights. The best part was seeing Ilias’s face light up when he saw them. “You should do this for a living,” my husband, Michael, suggested. I laughed it off, but it wasn’t a bad idea.
After Ilias’s third birthday, I set up a shop for my cake baking, calling it Cake Queen Oz, and orders started to come in. As time passed, the bakeshop became my full-time job. Once, I made a Titanic cake that was the length of a table for a lady whose family loved ships. It’s been seven years since Cake Queen Oz was born.
Cake baking brought me joy when I was going through a tough time. Every day I feel lucky that I’ve been able to turn my hobby into my job.

It was Monday. I was standing in the doorway of my room at The Seeing Eye (a guide dog school), anxiously waiting to hear my instructor call my name. All sorts of questions ran through my mind, and on the top was the fear that I was making an awful mistake — To adopt (领养) a guide dog when I had been afraid of dogs all my life? Crazy!
I wanted to bite my nails. I changed from one foot to the other and sighed frequently. Finally, shocking me out of my own thoughts, I heard my instructor say, “Shannon!”
“Shannon,” she said, “This is George.”
Two huge paws touched my knees.
“Down, George,” my instructor said, and the dog obeyed immediately.
We were taken back to my room where the door was closed, being left alone. I petted him. He put up his paw to shake my hand, and he sat so nicely, as if to say, “I’m a good boy, I promise.”
However, several minutes later, George got bored with me and went to the door, crying out for the lady who had trained him. I was at a complete loss as to what to do next.
Sometime later, my instructor took George and me on a walk outside. I took the handle of George’s harness (项圈) and stumbled (跌跌撞撞走) around that path instead of walking, and I kept stepping on poor George’s feet, but he never stopped and neither did I. Still, I was worried. If this stumbling around was what I could expect, maybe this guide dog wasn’t for me.
In the school, we were taught to walk with our dogs. We were also taught to feed, water and care for our dogs without any sighted help. We had to master all things before we left the school. Sometimes, it was easy, and sometimes it was not.
I struggled hard in order to pass the last day exam, where I would walk along an unfamiliar street with George. If we arrived at the destination safely, I could take George home.

7 . I was living in Delta in 2015. There was a man, Boniface, who owned a store which I’d often visited. Gradually we became friends. One day, we talked about the business opportunities in our country at that time, and during the communication, I found the most practical one was starting a barrow (手推车)rental business. Then we talked more on it, and both of us thought there was a strong possibility of succeeding. So we went into the business.
We started as a small business with 6 barrows. The barrow-men gave us 51 cents per day for renting the barrows. It seemed small but later grew and made our life better. But we didn’t stop there. That was because when we first started our business, our aim wasn’t only to make money. The most valuable thing for us is to touch others’ lives positively.
In Nigeria, being a barrow pusher is not a very attractive job. But for people who were poor farmers or young people without jobs, wheelbarrow pushing helps them make a living. It doesn’t require much skill. With hard work and vigor, a person can make money daily.
We saw the meaning of this business and then decided to spend money and resources on rebranding (重塑…的形象) barrows. We gave each barrow-man a branded T-shirt to show they belonged to a good brand. We also held small classes for them to educate them on how to make their barrows better transporters and how to be extra polite to people so as to build up a good fame. We marketed them as polite and excellent pushers to attract more customers. These methods worked. They started getting more jobs and earned more. And a number of them even saved up enough to start businesses of their own.
Today, that little business made us millionaires while hiring over 20 people and touching their lives positively. Over 20 families are fed because two Nigerians decided, despite all the difficulties, to do something.
