2 . I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke (中风). Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn’t look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organisation offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organisation. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organisation I had been looking for—Easy Care Gardening( ECG)!
There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.
Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydney’s North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise.
Finally, there are all those wonderful people we call “clients (客户)” but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and the stories they have to tell—the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.

I am fond the summer holiday. Last summer, I go to Hawaii for my holiday. I often had a walk along the beach after the supper or had a swim in the afternoon. They sky was blue, and the air was fresher. Whenever you went, you could saw the green trees and the colorful flowers. The food in Hawaii was delicious and the people was friendly, too. The holiday was really wonder. I will never forget the days when I spent in Hawaii. I enjoy travel across the world. I hope I can meet different people and visit different place of interest some day in the future.
4 . As a photographer, I left my hotel room on Thursday excited to record Tokyo.
I had just left the Tokyo Metro system, four floors under Shinjuku Station. Thousands of people stayed at train platforms (站台) and around the shops. It was around 3 p.m. I was lined up at the Bullet Train ticket counter to get some information about a trip to Nagoya tomorrow.
It was then that I felt the ground move under me slightly (轻微地). I took no notice of it at first, as did everyone around me. Then, seconds later, things started falling to the ground. I looked at an elderly man next to me. He smiled back at me and said one word:“Earthquake.”
I ran for the door, about 60 feet away. The ground was shaking so strongly that it was difficult to run in a straight line. My body was shaking when I reached the street. I still remembered the World Trade Center falling to the ground.
I turned to look at the building that I had just run out of; it was shaking uncontrollably. You could still hear the ground shaking as thousands of people evacuated the buildings. I started to take photos of everything that was happening.
I would find out later that afternoon that the quake was a magnitude (震级) of 8.9. Some people were shaken. There were a few women crying, but many others appeared calm and relaxed.
Making my way back to my hotel was a long and unforgettable journey. The rail system in Tokyo was completely shut down and millions were trying to make their way home on foot. The traffic came to a standstill on the streets, but I didn’t learn how catastrophic (灾难的) the event had actually been until I got to my hotel and turned on the news.
This earthquake will be forever burned in my mind as the most fearful experience of all.

The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year, I wouldn’t just be watching. I would be riding in Mr. Brown’s truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, looped around the lake, and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed toward the lake. “That’s where you’ll find Mr. Brown’s truck,” he said.
We stopped and got out of the car. And then I saw it — a white bird with a brown head and skinny legs. It cried and thrashed (激烈扭动) in the dirt in front of the cars that were driving downhill. Its wing looked broken. Suddenly it flew off.
“Dad!” I called. But my dad was watching the balloons.
“It has a nest (鸟巢) here somewhere,” a voice said.
I turned to see an old woman. “I’m Edie Thomas,” she said.
“I’m Nat,” I said. She shook my hand as if I were someone important.
Mrs. Thomas smiled. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area. No one told the bird about the balloon festival.” Then she pointed with her cane (手杖). On the ground was a perfect clutch of eggs, looking like a heap of pebbles (鹅卵石). They were in the path of cars, trucks and motorbikes.
Screech. The parent bird was back, its wing all twisted again.
“They pretend to be wounded,” said Mrs. Thomas. “They lead enemies off, miles sometimes, before flying back. Those eggs sit there pretending to be rocks.”
“Nat!” Dad called. “Isn’t it time you went down to see Mr. Brown?”
“Dad! I’m …”
I looked at the lake. The balloons were ready. Mr. Brown’s truck was there, ready to go.
A bird cry forced me to look back. I felt as if I had a rock in my stomach. “Dad, I’m not going.”
“You’re sure?”

Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk (木板人行道)was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom;on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring at the sea.I chose a spot between them and began to play.
As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me.She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me.She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
"You sure play beautiful music,” she said.“I think my friend would like your music.I want to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket.“I don’t have much, and I know you’re worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She’s going through a lot.I know the music will make her feel better.”
I told her I’d be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me,“Annie,I got you a present to cheer you up.It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.”
Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman.I played for quite a while.
Suddenly,Annie turned toward me and said,“You make it so beautiful.I can feel it inside my heart.”

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. When Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house far away in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester (护林人) worked.
After a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, Steve started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to a place near the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
