1 . Morgan Hartman was born with both physical and cognitive (认知的) disabilities. For years though, she lacked a diagnosis (诊断). One thing she did have: a happy spirit. Her dad, Cordon Hartman, never wanted to see that spirit dulled. But unfortunately, at times it was.
“In 2006, we were on a family vacation where I watched Morgan not be able to participate in a pool activity with three other children, and it was simply because of her lack of expression,” Gordon said. “It almost puts a lump (肿块) in your throat because it gives you a sad feeling that all Morgan wanted was to participate. She just wanted to play.”
After seeing this, Gordon started on a quest to create a space where no one felt left out. His idea: an inclusive theme park. He had experience as a builder and enlisted help from other experts to turn his dream into what is now Morgan’s Wonderland. The park, opened in 2010, is believed to be the only one like it in the world and it has expanded to a sports center and camp with an outdoor adventure park. Across all the recreation areas, all are fully accessible to everyone with physical and mental disabilities.
Gordon has seen firsthand how an accessible theme park can change lives through joy. “I met a couple from Mexico City. And they had never had a chance to, because of their special needs, ever a chance to play in water together. They heard about it and came here. They cried with me and talked to me about how this was the most wonderful opportunity they ever had,” he said.
Morgan’s Wonderland has welcomed visitors from dozens of countries and all 50 states of the USA — and those with disabilities enter for free. “It’s the small things that make the big difference: Having fun,” Gordon said. “Here at Morgan’s Wonderland and all the different Morgan’s venues, you don’t watch. You participate.”

4 . Why Live Near the River?
Imagine pioneers traveling west in the 1800s. In those days, it was hard to find running water and shops where to buy things. As time went by, most pioneers had to make their homes near a river so that they could get water easily.
How did rivers help people live in the past?
Back in the pioneer days, people grew their own food, caught their own fish, and collected their own water.
When building many factories right next to rivers for the water’s power to make machines work, some people choose to live near a river for working. They use the river to ship large goods, and some of them work at these factories where power factories provide electricity to homes and businesses.
Who wouldn’t want to live near a river?
Some people are nervous about living near rivers because rivers can cause floods (洪水). Every once in a while, floodwaters rise higher than a house, ruining (泡坏) many things in the house.
How do people decide where to live?
A.Why do people live near rivers now? |

8 . Young adults in Singapore can often live with their parents into their 30s. They are encouraged by the government, which is fond of praising family values. Housing policy makes it difficult for young people to live independently. Almost 80% of Singaporeans live in subsidized (补助的) public housing. They cannot have a flat of their own until they marry or turn 35.
Yet a small but growing number of Singaporeans are resisting the nanny state (保姆式国家): Between 1990 and 2020, the number of those under 35 who lived alone or with non-family members grew from 33,400 to 51,300. Since they do not qualify for public housing, they must rent in the private sector. One factor is that Singaporeans are getting married later. In 1980, the average ages at which men and women married were 27 and 24; today, they are 30 and 29. A growing number choose not to marry at all. For others, it was COVID-19 that pushed them out of the nest. Serene Chee, a 25-year-old lawyer, did not greatly mind living with her parents until travel restrictions and work-from-home policies kept her stuck at home all the time. In June, Ms Chee and a friend moved into an apartment together.
Living on your own is not easy. First, you must inform your parents. It took Lydia Yang, an illustrator who was then 28, three months to gather the courage Then you must learn to pay bills and do basic chores. When Lenne Chai, a photographer, moved out seven years ago at the age of 23y she did not know how to cook.
Life on your own can be lonely. Ms Yang found it “a bit depressing”, particularly during the lockdown. But living apart may improve relationships. Both Ms Yang and Ms Chai said that they got on better with their parents after moving out. When living together, they paid each other little attention. Now their weekly visits are “quality time”, said Ms Chai. When Ms Chee’s parents came to her flat for dinner recently, they were impressed by how tidy it was.
